jawa asks... What gaming hardware might you get during 2024?

Anything to do with games at all.

During 2024 I would consider buying...

Maybe a PS5 but probably not. I'm tempted by Rise of the Ronin and Where Winds Meet (though I'm not sure if this is coming to PS5) but I find it hard to justify buying a console for one game, especially at its current price. I'm on the look out for a SG-1000 MK II and a Pico Beena at a reasonable price so maybe one (or both) of those.

Please do not post this in the "No Context" thread

It feels like the Steam Deck is getting some real traction; I believe that a number of folk here in GR have that system now. I am interested in the device although, in my mind, it feels like you really need a PC as well as the Deck?

You do not. I'm downsizing my home office space, and my Deck with the dock in desktop mode, has largely replaced my PC for day to day use. My main PC only gets turned on now for downloading media, and running more graphically intense games and VR, which are both pretty occasional for me right now.

Victor, I'm imagining that your racing setup is something like this :datass: .

It's great to see a few different ideas thrown into the mix, Outrunner! You must have a terrific retro Sega collection.

Nice, Knoyleo. I could see how some folk may just own and use a Deck although I'd imagine that most users have a primary PC as well. Perhaps this will change if the Deck can reach out to a wider market.

Ah! There seem to be quite a few handheld retro systems on the market now; are there any particular ones you are looking at, kerr?

rinks wrote:...Very slim chance of getting a Steam Deck... I will be buying a new Mac (probably a Mini), which I will play some Steam games on but won’t be primarily a gaming device.

Could be an expensive year, rinks! My iMac is ancient now (it's a "late 2013" model) but I hope it keeps going for a while yet: Apple gear has always been "top dollar" but it perhaps seems to be even more so these days. IIRC Mafro has had a Mac Mini or two; they look pretty cool.

I am really not sure, a device that's not too high or premium it's more the messing about with them that's my sort of thing, it could even end up I don't get one I just get a broke laptop or something to work on, I just kind of have a need to tinker with things that needs feeding ..... I was given an old laptop with no charger possibly working or broken so maybe just a charger for that so I can mess with it.

It's pretty cool that you get older gear up and running again; it's good to see kit remaining useful.

PS5 will need to happen, it's probably more a case of when rather than if.

That's great, Vermi! I know that you've had an eye on PS5 for a while now... it's gonna be good to see you jump aboard.

Do you have any preference for the digital or disc models?

It'll be the disc version, the main reason being that my internet is so antiquated that my speed simply isn't good enough to download the massive game files needed.

I'm with Nintendo like those MAGA twats would be with Trump if he shot someone on Fifth Avenue. They can do whatever the hell they want, and I'll still buy the Switch 2 on day one.

Potentially looking at a Quest 3. Need to see more new releases that take advantage of the hardware, and preferably a sizeable price drop.

Is there any real news on the Switch 2 or are we just speculating 2024?

Mate, you need to try and spend at least some time this year not thinking about elections or you're going to go crazy

Nothing official from Nintendo but it is widely rumoured the dev kits are out for the new console. The 2024 date has been collaborated by multiple outlets including VGC and Eurogamer.

Also, Switch tech is in need of an update if they want to keep sales going.

Zero real news, it's all speculation at this point.

Yeah, Id recommend the disc version on the basis that you have the option of both downloads and (cheaper) discs, Vermi.

We can dream, Preezy. I hope that it'll be backwards compatible with the range of titles that originally appeared :datass: .

Plot twist: the Switch 2 is the original Switch but download-only. However... it'll have a BASIC BLUE home screen option 8-) .

That does look to be a smart bit of kit, Ob. Very cool indeed.
