What is your favourite TV gaming console?

This should be a nice, quiet chat! All you have to do is peruse the (not totally comprehensive but hopefully covering most choices) list of TV gaming consoles... and pick your favourite three.

It's tough! Take your time and, hey, if you're wearing a hat at a jaunty angle right now, why not write words and maybe even - gasp! - list your top three consoles in order?

In order

1) Mega Drive
2) Dreamcast
3) Xbox 360

Mega Drive and Dreamcast would actually be joint first but I'm trying not to cheat. Third place was really close as well between Master System and the 360 but the Xbox won out purely because I owned it longer and had more games for it. I do own a couple of Master System now but they weren't the original ones I owned.

This is difficult. Can I really not vote for the Mega Drive? Or the Wii U? :o .

I've selected the N64 (so chunky, much vibrant), the PS4 (lots of tremendous games; my fave system) and the Switch (I moan about the UI and apps being so amazingly dull compared to past Nintendo systems, and I would have liked Nintendo to have delivered a bigger range of quality games... but, beyond that, it's terrific. I love the "switch" aspect).

In order: PS4 > Switch > N64.

PS2 for me, its library is simply unmatched.

One of the major points of a console that plugs into a TV for me is that it is plug-and-play, so that discounts anything from PS3 generation upwards that both layers getting into a game through its own menu and, more detrimentally, has install times and updates to download. A PS2 is obviously different to a PC, a PS5 isn't.

1.) Switch
2.) N64 (that nostalgia kick :datass:)
3.) Xbox Series X - bit of a cheat this one I suppose as the back compatibility is really good so you can play a lot of games still going back to the Xbox

The Switch is just fantastic in my opinion.

I have the fondest memories of the Xbox 360.
Despite having 2 consoles die on me it just had some terrific games.
I still think MSR was the biggest "Wow" moment in graphics I've ever had as its recreation of London was just magnificent.
I'd really love to see those levels redone with something like Unreal Engine 5 as I just feel they were the best technical showcases available to have races down iconic London locations which are ultra high detail.

Easily the Dreamcast. This was the first console I ever brought 100% with my own money and as someone who wears their Sega fanboy heart on his sleeve I think that those 2-3 years of unfettered creativity from Sega were the high point of Japanese gaming.

It gave me my first proper internet portal, my first taste of online gaming and some top games nights playing Powerstone and Soulcalibur. In 2001 I got to the point where I nearly gave up playing videogames altogether having lost a lot of interest in the medium. Then I got Jet Set Radio which blew my mind.

I remember having a few hundred quid in accrued holiday pay and going down town in Derby to buy the DC with Sonic Adventure, Soulcalibur and Shenmue. The bus broke down halfway home and on a cold December evening I had to walk home in the rain with this large box. Finally getting in and opening it was a feeling I will never forget.

Total Nintendo, Tom! All decent choices although I just wondered... have you selected them in comparison to other systems or because they were the ones that you had? (Nothing wrong either way, of course!).

Outrunner wrote:...1) Mega Drive 2) Dreamcast...

Outrunner, you sure are a Sega fan! The Mega Drive was my personal favourite 16-bit console and it had an excellent array of titles. I've never played on a Dreamcast although I recall seeing it in stores running demos; the sharpness and vibrancy of the graphics was very impressive.

OrangeRKN wrote:PS2 for me, its library is simply unmatched...

The PS2 certainly has an absolutely huge range of games, Orange. Oddly for such a popular console, I've never owned one. At launch I felt that the games were pretty weak for the price and, with money tight at the time, I just stuck with my PS1 (and then PSone) for a few years before later jumping aboard Xbox. The PS2 was an absolute monster in terms of popularity, though.

Possibly a little harsh, OR... but I find myself agreeing. Consoles have slowly become more PC-like and I'm not particularly a fan of this, with the "plug-and-play" aspect you mention being replaced by buying storage, downloading updates and the disc/cart becoming a mere access key. I - generally - love how console games have developed but the tech side has, I feel, become more intrusive.

Balladeer, I forget... do you only buy Nintendo systems or do you play on others as well? GameCube is another system that passed me by as I was very much a single-format gamer (Xbox) at the time. I do love the look of the console and the dinky discs, though!

Preezy wrote:In order:

Blam! Straight to the point, Preezy, and PlayStation all the way! My top choice matches yours as I feel the game range on PS4 has been extraordinary, whilst the online gaming and social media functionality is great too.

Jen, lol! Intensely romantic comparisons there! I, too, have a soft spot for the MD  .

Robbo-92 wrote:1.) Switch... The Switch is just fantastic in my opinion.

It's certainly a system with plenty of positive aspects, Robbo. It's odd as I've never griped so much about a console as I have with Switch but, even so, it's terrific. For me, the dual play (TV/portable) is a huge plus over other consoles - I love kicking back on the sofa with it and also plugging it into my screen. Tremendous!

Ah, the 360 gets a shout at last, Peter! It's certainly one of my faves and I still feel that it was a much higher performer ahead of the PS3 for the bulk of that console gen. Microsoft built on the OG Xbox by delivering a massive array of games that performed well on the system. I have been away from Xbox for a number of years now but the 360 remains a very strong console in my mind.

Kerboom! No messing about, you're just slamming down your faves, floyd! I, too, included the N64 in my top three; it was chunky, it could be clunky but when coders got things just right - as with Ocarina, Banjo, GoldenEye, WCW/NwO Revenge, Road Rash and more - it was just fantastic.

Yeah, as I said above, unfortunately I bypassed the DC - it was a great console but arrived at the wrong time for me - although I do consider it a classic, Carlos. Even today the brightness and style of the games looks good.

Blimey! I think I recall you mentioning this tale and it makes the happiness of your time with the DC all the sweeter :-).

Went for the SNES, Playstation and Dreamcast, but that was largely due to the time i had them at, and the nostalgic feelings it gives me.

In all likelihood i have played more on My Series X than all of those combined. Bloody loved that SNES though. Still works too. Infact the DC does as well. The PS1 might, but I was already having to turn it upside down to get it to read discs when i retired it from service 20 years ago.

Are we counting Series X excellent multi generation backwards compatibility? ;)

If so I'd go

Series X
Switch (NSO has NES/SNES/MD/N64 :P )
PS2

I think it's fair to count those games, the console can still play them after all.

Ah! Another big shout for the DC! You've sure picked three strong systems there, Ironhide. Interestingly, all are from roughly the same time period - that must have been a hell of a good gaming time for you.

kazanova_Frankenstein wrote:Went for the SNES, Playstation and Dreamcast, but that was largely due to the time i had them at, and the nostalgic feelings it gives me...

I'd thought that the SNES would have been mentioned more so far - perhaps it will get more shouts in future posts. I almost selected the PlayStation, too, kaz; at the time I was a huge fan and it's probably only because I haven't played on it for years that I didn't include it in my top three. Such a big range of games and it was around for ages; it's amazing to think that the PSone outsold the PS2 during Christmas 2000!

Yeah, backwards compatibility (or, emulation) can be a big attraction, Johnny. Personally I'm not a huge fan of emulation as I love using the original systems, but there's no doubt that it aids the ability for the consoles and games to live on!
