Two Dreamcasts! Yeah, Mommy, Sega always did have that "arcade" vibe with their consoles; many of their games seemed to have the same kind of punchy appearance, sound and colour to grab the attention.

I've never played on a 3DO but I really liked the idea behind the system, Octo - rather like the earlier MSX micro computers, it was neat having manufacturers make their own versions whilst retaining compatibility. The heavy hitters of Road Rash, Need for Speed, Star Control II and Return Fire were meant to be excellent, too.

Moggy wrote:I really wanted a 3DO when they came out. But I was a kid and my parents refused to buy one as I had been given a SNES the Christmas before.

Bullet dodged in the end!

Oh, man, yes - in terms of a large game catalogue I guess the SNES was the far better option!

Probably worth it for Tempest 3000, though, Chris? ;-). Do you still have the console? I believe they (and the controllers and games) are very collectible nowdays.

Orange, you appear to be someone who prefers to let consoles settle in for a bit before you jump aboard? Probably a good idea! Of course Switch was the exception... and maybe Playdate?

Dang! Perhaps that's quite unusual for someone so into games? I wonder if you'll jump in at some point? You've got me thinking... I reckon I'll use this theme in my next jawa asks...!

I pondered, Dan... but I'd have to include every console released to market, really?

True

I'm fortunate that I've never had to skip a console that I wanted to play, really. I'm primarily a Nintendo gamer, with exceptions (OG Xbox & 360, plus some PC gaming) but the only home console of theirs I've skipped is the Wii U, most of which appeared on the Switch anyway. The 3DS passed me by, but I was disinterested in handheld gaming by then.

I'm planning to skip the next Nintendo home console, whenever it appears (and I doubt it'll be for a while). I already have a solid backlog:

Pokemon Violet (just the last boss to beat, then I'm done)
Spiritfarer
Pikmin 3
The Mario Kart 8 Deluxe DLC
Rekt (still need to beat OR's score on one course)
Mario 3D Land & Bowser's Fury
Monster Crown
The final boss on Kaze :x
Dragon's Dogma
Yooka-Laylee

I'm trying not to buy anything else until I'm mostly finished with that little lot. Once that's done, I plan on a "second wave" of Switch games, which I'll pick up (hopefully cheaply  ) after everyone else has played them, almost as if they're a new generation of their own:

Tears of the Kingdom
Metroid Prime Remastered
Luigi's Mansion 3
Advance Wars Remaster
Pikmin 4
Animal Crossing DLC
Pokemon Legends Arceus
New Pokemon Snap
Cassette Beasts
Bomb Rush Cyberfunk
Lonesome Village

In a lot of cases (when I've bought the console, as opposed to being a kid waiting on Christmas) it's been for a specific game. DS Lite was for Phantom Hourglass, PS3 for MGS4, Vita for Tearaway and 3DS for Monster Hunter 4U - of course they had a library of other games I wanted to play, but those are the titles that tipped me over the edge. The WiiU was more of a casual purchase and spent the vast majority of its life as a communal local multiplayer machine in the house share I was living in, whereas the PS4 was for myself and stayed in my room. The PS5 I would have held off longer on buying if it were my decision, but my partner was the one who bought it. The Switch is the exception yeah in being my first launch day console, but was well worth it for Breath of the Wild on a handheld! The Playdate is somewhat different as it seemed clear you'd need to get in early to secure an order (as proven by them still working to satisfy the initial preorders).

I skipped the Wii U after not spending a lot of time with my Wii. I don't have any regrets, all the good games were ported to Switch anyway :datass:

I've only missed out on PS3 and PS4 and PS VITA.

I have zero regrets not getting a PS3 over an Xbox 360, trash machine imo. (YEAH I SAID IT).

PS4 on the other hand had lots of GRADE A exclusives. I can't get on with those stick placements though, I couldn't on PS2, I couldn't on the Wii U official controller either, I need Alternate sticks like Xbox and now thankfully the Switch controllers.

I had a PSP, I have no idea if the PS VITA was more powerful or less, Nintendo had me with basically all their handheld devices..

Tempest 3000 was incredible. No I sold it a year later for pretty much what I paid.

Every Atari console - too young to have had the early consoles, wasn't bothered about the Lynx or Jaguar.

Both the NES and SNES as I had the equivalent Sega console at the time, had a Gameboy (OG) though.

Neo Geo - never saw one, couldn't afford one.

Wii - couldn't use it, bought my sister one though.

Every console released after the Xbox 360/PS3 gen .

Video games prior to the PlayStation, basically.

The Wii, Wii U, 3DS and Nintendo Switch. Never played any of them. In contrast to the GameBoy Colour, Advance, and Gamecube, which I all owned, and the N64, which I’d play round friends semi regularly.

Always had an affinity with the Dreamcast despite never owning one. In hindsight I could have probably snuck that one in during 2001 tbh when it was being offloaded at silly prices much like the Gamecube was years later.

Overpriced monstrosity of a thing with next to no decent exclusives, it was the Xbox One of that generation.

I think PS3 came into its own towards the end of its life cycle and there are some great games on there, but yeah, I did prefer my 360... The ones that didn't RROD :slol:

NES - it was computers like the Amiga and spectrum in my house at that time.

Sega Saturn - I had a PlayStation instead after Sega shot themselves in the feet with a price tag 100 pounds higher, and releasing the console with only a scart lead which most TV's in 1995 didn't have a socket for.

Wii U/Switch & Xbox one/series whatever - Had become disillusioned with Nintendo after the Wii ultimately proved a disappointment and I switched to just owning Sony consoles thereafter, especially after I had an Xbox 360 which was a great yet unreliable piece of hardware.

The PS3 really took off in the final couple of years, whereas the 360 got bogged down with Kinect. As I’m noticing playing stuff now, third party devs also got their act together after years of inferior ports. No shortage of great stuff to play in the first few years, but a slow starter if you also had a 360 at that point in time.
