Which two of these game system packages would you choose?

Let's enjoy a gaming system fantasy! Imagine that you were given an opportunity to select a few gaming systems; wonderful gifts to play on.

But... the gaming systems are set out in batches of three. Select two game packages from the options and then write about your level of excitement!

Dang, man, this could be the toughest jawa asks yet. I have selected two packages... but I might change 'em!

Spectrum | NES | PS2 is pretty hard to beat from that list, three titans right there

Spectrum/NES/PS2 is the easy choice for me. So many incredible games.

3d0/psp/xbox x series

I love the PSP and would play on that loads, and the Xbox X is just a beast that can play 3 generations worth of stuff plus retro compilations etc and the 3DO would work as a paper weight, actually I think return fire is on it so id use it once a blue moon for that.

It's interesting that you guys, Jen and Sep, found the Spectrum | NES | PS2 option to be super-enticing! I can see why although it wasn't my own choice; I went for Commodore 64 | Wii U | PlayStation 3 (a decent spread) and Game Gear | Nintendo DS | PS4 (don't really want the Game Gear but the DS and, especially, PS4 drew me in).

But... now the BBC B | Mega Drive | N64 combo is becoming so tempting. And how can I not have the Amiga 1200 | Xbox 360? Boy, this is *too* difficult!

 . Yeah, I've not used a 3DO but I've played Return Fire on the PS1 which was great (and is meant to be better on 3DO) plus the console had excellent versions of Need for Speed and Road Rash!

Mainly for the Gamecube and Multi-Mega.

I have based my picks on which two sets of gifts I'd most like to receive, mostly based on the fact that I don't already own any of the consoles...

My largest collections are in the Xbox range, and PS1/2. So I’ll take the two bundles that include the Series X and PS2, for maximum compatibility. Obviously it sucks not to have any Sega consoles in that selection. Many of the Mega Drive classics are well served in retro compilations, but I’d miss terribly the Saturn games.

Does the Series X get access to all available Xbox games? The 3DS access to all 3DS and DS games?

I genuinely don’t know how you keep thinking up these questions Jawa

PSP and Series X. The 3DO goes in the bin. The Series X can be easily Dev unlocked to run anything up to a GameCube at full speed. A hacked PSP plays classic Sony franchises and everything up to GBA full speed.

Thus it becomes a NES, Master System, Mega Drive, SNES, Dreamcast, N64, PS1, GameCube, PSP, Xbox, 360, Xbox One and Series X.

Thinking outside the box.

And what's your second choice?

I only saw a Multi-Mega once in real life... and it looked so good. Considering that the Mega Drive plus Mega CD was a bit of a beast (albeit a beautiful one) the Multi was so small and sleek. I recall it as being very expensive, though; I believe it was £399.99 at launch in 1994 and that's equivalent to around £682 today.

Which two packs did you go for, Dan? It sounds like you'll be trying a lot of systems out for the first time!

Yeah, I tried to setup the system packs so that there isn't an obvious pick - although, of course, that perspective depends on opinion :-). It's pretty tough, even when you can make two selections.

Ah! You're going down the backwards-compatible route, Robbo! A decent tactic in this situation and, yeah, you can do so if you wish :-).

I like to try and create topics that make folk want to take part and any sort of "comparison" approach - or something that enables people to write about their own perspective or experience - usually goes down well!

Carlos, you are clearly a guy who is ready to tinker with systems to enable them to run "non-standard" stuff  . One system to rule them all!

I’d definitely choose the Series X option for one then! The allure of the Switch is hard to resist for the second choice! But then I’m only looking at a 1/3 of the consoles those groups would offer! Choices, choices!

Oh it certainly creates discussion, I’d have just run out of ideas ages ago so it’s good to see you still coming up with new questions to ask!

I'm a simple man. I see Switch and DS, I vote for Switch and DS. The PS4 is a nice bonus there.
