RIP DVD: John Lewis ditches DVD players with sales down 40%

Trends show DVD players and small TVs are falling out of favour

In case you hadn't realised, the DVD player has officially become old technology. While many of us may have moved on to Blu-ray and Ultra HD Blu-ray, or ditched the discs altogether, the annual John Lewis consumer trends report shows it was only in 2018 that the demise of DVD players truly went mainstream.

This year saw sales of DVD players fall 40% according to the never knowingly undersold retailer, enough for John Lewis to confirm it wouldn't be restocking DVD players once those currently in market are sold (however long that might take). Blu-ray players will continue, though.

It wasn't just DVD players that took a dive; smaller TVs also fell by the way side as more and more people opted for super-size screens. Sales of 60in TVs were up a whopping 249% in 2018, helped no doubt by the football World Cup, while small TVs suffered a decline.

Back in 2010 the best-selling screen size at John Lewis was a 36-inch TV, compared to 55-inch in 2018. In fact, during the World Cup the retailer reports 70in TVs were the "fastest growing vision category". Of course, John Lewis is only one segment of the market, and we're sure plenty of smaller TVs are still selling, not least at the entry-level end of the market.

But it's not a huge surprise that DVD is out of favour. Last year streaming video revenues overtook DVD sales for the first time, and with HD discs and streaming services easy to come by, we see no reason to settle for anything less. And of course any 4K Blu-ray player can still play your old DVD collection.

If it is the beginning of the end for DVD, then it's not the only disc having a hard time, as CD sales also plummeted in 2018...

Yup, I believe both Xbox One S and Xbox One X support the format.

Worth checking out as it's superior to streaming

We bought a new 42" 4K TV at the weekend and DVDs look horrendous, we'll be pawning our collection.

According to the report 55" is the average size this year and 70"+ is the fastest growing segment.

Where the hell do you fit a 70" screen?

Edit: It was a 43" we bought

I think "anyone with a screen over 70 inches" is a good and fair way of deciding how to cull the population

It’s not the size, it’s what you do with it.

If you live in a council house I suspect it's play DVDs or watch Eastenders in standard definition on it.

My DVD player finally stopped working earlier this year. I'd had it since 2001 and really liked it  .

Tbh, I rarely watch a film in a single viewing; I spread it out over two or three sessions :fp: .

It does annoy me a little when you go into a supermarket and it’s still predominantly DVDs, with a few Blu Ray movies thrown in. And you can completely forget about Ultra HD (I order mine from Amazon and HMV, usually 2 for £30).

Not sure the type of person that is still buying DVD players. There’s now an incredible selection of DVDs in Poundland though. Some I’ve been in have had an entire wall of them.

I don't understand how people can do this.. If I want to watch a film I'm there till the end (Unless it's shite or something unexpected comes up). I just don't get watching it piecemeal like that.

I can understand if you're time limited, or you have kids and it's hard to find time for a full movie, but people that don't have those issues.... why?

I have a short attention / concentration span for movies, CD. I usually see something in GRcade that distracts me :fp: .

They tend to be close to the checkouts along with sweets, I can see why they put the children's ones there as they're relatively cheap.

I've had the same DVD player since 2006, it's a great piece of kit and when the time comes, i will replace it with a blu ray player as they play regular discs too anyways (well, i assume they do).

KK wrote:There’s now an incredible selection of DVDs in Poundland though

You can sometimes get blu rays in there too, though my local store doesn't update that part of the shelf very often.

Most movies i watch in a single sitting as you'd expect, but for those films which are 3 hours long+ (like LOTR), i tend to watch them in two parts as i enjoy them a lot more when i do so.
