PostJohn Lewis voted Best Broadband Provider in Which? survey

Which? wrote:When it comes to broadband, you're better off with a smaller supplier. That's according to the results of the latest Which? satisfaction survey.

Consumer champion Which? surveyed thousands of internet users to compare experiences with various different broadband providers.

The results show that smaller suppliers are dramatically upstaging some of the biggest names in the industry. Respondents who use the top four providers said that they would recommend them to their friends.

  • BEST UK PROVIDER: John Lewis Broadband - 76% (38MB, £38.50 a month phone+fibre, 100GB monthly allowance)
  • Zen Internet - 75% (76MB, £46 a month phone+fibre, unlimited)
  • Utility Warehouse - 73% (76MB, £35.29 a month phone+fibre, unlimited)
  • Plusnet - 72% (76MB, £35.94 a month phone+fibre, unlimited)
  • Post Office - 61%
  • Tesco Broadband - 56%
  • Virgin Media - 52%
  • EE - 50%
  • Sky - 48% (76MB, £46.40 a month phone+fibre, unlimited)
  • TalkTalk - 47%
  • WORST: BT Broadband - 45% (76MB, £42.99 a month phone+fibre, unlimited)

Having pointed out the deficiencies of those six, the top half of the table looks to be far superior, although it's worth noting that not a single supplier got top marks in the 'Value for Money' or 'Speed' categories. In fact, only two providers - Virgin and Zen - managed to score four out of five for speed, which has prompted Which? to campaign for providers to actually deliver the speeds that they are promising customers at the point of purchase.Clustered at the bottom of the table with scores of 50% and below are EE, TalkTalk, Sky and BT. Virgin Media and Tesco Broadband got better, but still mediocre scores that are barely worth talking about.

John Lewis Broadband, a new entry to the Which? table, scores a hugely impressive 76% overall, with top marks on four out of six categories, while Zen Internet comes in second place, despite offering relatively poor value for money. Utility Warehouse and Plusnet both scored well too, but there's a noticeable drop off past fourth place, with the Post Office's broadband getting a score of just 61%.

If you’re suffering from poor service from your broadband provider, don’t just stand for it – switch! You can use broadbandchoices.co.uk to compare the deals available in your area.

The big players should be pretty strawberry floating embarrassed with themselves, especially BT. I looked at the sheer number of complaints online about BT and it put me right off. Nobody can seem to speak to a UK call-centre.

Never spoken to anyone anywhere that has ever had good things to say about TalkTalk. All their money seems to go into sponsoring XFactor on ITV & bombarding people with literature in the mail.

Same here, I've only ever heard bad things about TalkTalk. If I'd had to guess I would've put them well below any of the others.

Surprised to see Virgin Media so low. They provide easily the best speeds, are ultra reliable and when I've had problems, their (UK) support is pretty good. If you don't need a landline, it's also great value for money.

Ofcom can say that providers should provide the speeds they advertise all they want, but while we rely solely on BT Openreach for our infrastructure, that ain't gonna happen. Also: Ofcom are gooseberry fool.

I got hold of a UK BT call centre the other week and, get this, she couldn't answer my question, put me on hold for a second, and, without introduction, I found myself speaking to guy in India instead.

They are cheap, unlimited and I don't know anyone who has TalkTalk and doesn't get the speed they pay for.

Exactly what more do you want in an ISP?

I don't understand these surveys at all, they don't seem to take into account what I'm sure causes the vast majority of issues 'user error', of course the ISPs with the largest number of customers are going to get the worst results, all the people who have no idea what they are doing use them.

EDIT - I'm sure the customer service departments of the big companies aren't very good, but like I said, not really what I'm personally looking for in an ISP.

I'm with TalkTalk and I've had no issues whatsoever. Speed is good, connection is steady and the price is decent.

How can it be voted best when you are limited to 100gb!!

I've done about that this week!

I'm with BT, get constant great speeds and never had an issue.

Should John Lewis even qualify for that list? I thought the days of monthly limits were a thing of the past....

Yeah, this. I can't believe anybody would still sign up to any deal with a data restriction.

BT was still promoting those limited contracts as recently as last year, but even it has stopped now.

Same here. We've been on Virgin for the majority of my internet using time (and with Telewest/BlueYonder before the rebrand) and I could probably count the amount of times it's gone down on my fingers. Practically always stable and running at the speed it should be.

I think which constraint on customer support, which is probably why John Lewis won. I would imagine that they would have fantastic customer support but for that support your getting a worse deal.

A lot of people do spaff over John Lewis as if it were some paradise retail experience and everything about it is perfect - even though most of the time you're paying way over the odds for the same product as elsewhere - so I wouldn't be surprised if that's reflected in this survey.

That and/or the people surveyed don't have a clue.
