John Lewis are one of the few that throw in a longer warranty as standard on many electricals so in that regard it makes sense to pay the extra. For broadband however the only incentive would be great customer service and a line that is the most stable. If they removed the cap it would be worth it.

It's probably like the Post Office (who employ a fair usage policy too). It's popular with old folk and non power users.

A big surprise is how Sky are the most expensive in regards to their Pro service. You have to phone them up for that though.

Except is there really a problem with any of the ISPs in that regard? My experience tells me not really.

I think they price match as well so it is worth buying electrical goods from them and taking advantage of that awesome guarantee.

For broadband though I am only interested in the speed, if there's a cap and the price. John Lewis wins on price but fails miserably on speed and caps.

The only BB company Ive heard of that doesnt have a stable 'line' would be BT.

Great customer service is basically a no hoper unless you are speaking to a UK call centre. If you ever have a problem you are totally within your rights to insist that you speak to a UK call centre if that bothers you and if they have one.

Maybe John Lewis have an amazing router. Sky's isn't fit for purpose when it comes to WiFi.

It's ironic because BT have the best router of the big 5, and their prices are competitive, but are totally incompetent when something goes wrong, which is why they're last. Having a call-centre based in India has killed them.

I was with AOL for years and never had a problem, yet they were buried all the time.

It doesn't really matter because if you want a better router, with most ISPs its not a problem to just go out and buy one.

By the way in the UK AOL and TalkTalk are one and the same and have been for years, I think by now if you were still on AOL you'd have been officially handed over to TalkTalk.

They're bloody expensive! You're looking at about £100+.

I've just resorted to plugging the PS4 & computer directly in to Sky's hub using a flat Ethernet cable. It's not that the WiFi isn't strong enough (it manages about 20Mbps of the 38), it's that the signal (or whatever you call it) fluctuates like a yo-yo, making direct streaming of HD hopeless - even in the same room. It doesn't support ac either, but then neither does the PS4.

Hence why the 'free' ones are so crap. It's the same for most ISPs really, they'll give you the most basic modem/router combo they can to cut down on costs.

The routers are fine if used just as a gateway your best bet is to by a Wireless AP for like £20 a connect that to provide Wireless.

:)

BT sublet access to the 'cables'. What happens with the headends and management is up to the ISP themselves. BT, weirdly, seem to have a worse run at this. Anecdotally at least.

Yeah that's all true, but in terms of stability a faulty line is going to be faulty no matter the ISP and then they all have to contact Openreach to send out an engineer.
DLM can cause some issues too but that's normally speed issues rather than intermittency.

Except Virgin in most cases.

Imagine working for an ISP and having to deal with their Indian call centres all day :dread:

In fact, the broadband helpdesks we use at BT Wholesale are only reachable via online chat, which is even worse. From my experience, BT's service as a wholesaler matches their retail offering judging by this survey.

Most of the time DLM works well. But when it goes wrong, it goes wrong.

What worries me is that this was a vote, and the people of Britain have been shown they can't be trusted to name a decent broadband provider, let alone elect a government.

The real question is, who did they ask?
