I've gone for the digital preorder on PSN, and to my delight it's going to be unlocked tomorrow.

I’ll keep an eye on this one. :)

Very slow pacing at the moment.

They actually gave it a 9. It was just printed the wrong way because they had their head up their arse.

Right first impressions based on nearly four hours of play:

Characters: Not keen on them at the moment, but I'm hoping it will improve as I progress further into the game. Yagami seems to be very stoic, cold even.

City: Very familiar as usual.

Sidequests: So far I know there's friendships that you have to build up and once max'ed out, they can join in as an EX attack. Haven't seen one yet. Proper side quests still haven't popped up but probably because I'm still on chapter one.

Minigames: So far I like the best is the House of the Dead rip off. Fighting Vipers seems clunky but I haven't played that before so it's just a result of mashing buttons. Mahjong returns with a vengeance. Still don't understand how to play this (and yeah 100% completion list have Mahjong.)

Fighting styles: Nothing too groundbreaking so far.

I take it Kamurocho is completely open now and half of it isn't closed off like in Yakuza 6?

Was hoping Simply Games would dispatch today, but there not until Monday. Probably something to do with the dumb digital version being out four days earlier thing.

So far I can see, I can pretty much go everywhere as I please. Once I got blocked by an invisible barrier with red stop signs but that happens during a quest.

I found a new form of racing in the game, but I can't access it right away. I can't wait to try it out.

Push Square scored this a hearty 8/10. Said it's perfect for newcomers to the "Yakuza" games.

Finished the first chapter.

Safe to say that I like the fighting styles from Yakuza 0 better. Done a few friendships, and finished my first side quest.

I was disappointed with the combat in Kiwami 2 coming off the back of 0 and Kiwami 1, as they removed style switching completely*. Are they back in this, or is it one set style?

*I know the original 1&2 didn't have styles, but it still felt like a step back after 0&1 had them.

There are only two styles: one for crowd and other for one on one. You can switch between them in battles.

Yagami himself is more fragile than the dragon of Dojima and relies on blocking and sidesteps.

Just completed a few side quests.

And yep. Some of them are funny.

The game is ramping up nicely, mainly thanks to the side quests are popping up. Done a lot of friendship quests as well.

Some of the quests are crazy at times.

Tempted by this. How does it compare to Yakuza? In terms of the story and general action?

I was never that fussed about the sidegames.

It’s like Yakuza. But with new gameplay mechanics like following a person, looking for clues, taking photos. Everything you’ll associate with being a P.I. detective.

They're certainly getting their mileage out of Kamurocho.

For some reason I hadn't thought about this being done with the Dragon Engine. Feeling more tempted by it now. (Will finish Hollow Knight first though.)

How much of detective work is in the game play? Because I sort of like to play as a detective and work out the clue or mystery.

Similar to LA Noire.

You have to follow someone. Hide behind something when they spin around and try to see who's following them. So far this is the most used mechanic. Sometimes you will have to take photos to prove they are doing something wrong.

Collecting clues. Bit like Phoenix Wright's collecting clues from crime scenes.

Presenting clues when confronting someone, or confirming your theory.

Actually most of the time I'm just jogging around and complete friendship and side quests. 20 hours later, I'm still on chapter 3.

Basically it's Yakuza with basic detective mechanics, so far. I'm hoping that the game opens up as I progress further.

My initial fears about the main character being a bore has disappeared. It's the side quests that he shines through with a wide range of emotions.
