PostKasabian's Tom Meighan admits in court to assaulting his ex
by Eighthours » Tue Jul 07, 2020 12:23 pm

I assumed he had left the band yesterday due to a drugs or alcohol problem! Noooooo, it was much worse, unfortunately.

Former Kasabian singer Tom Meighan has pleaded guilty to assaulting his former fiancee.

The 39-year-old admitted at Leicester Magistrates' Court attacking Vikki Ager on the evening of 9 April.

The court heard a child had witnessed the assault and contacted 999 to report that a "domestic incident was taking place".

He was given an 18-month community order and ordered to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work.

He will also be required to complete five days of rehabilitation and ordered to pay a £90 victim surcharge and £85 in prosecution costs.

No restraining order has been imposed.

On Monday, the group announced Meighan had stepped down from the band in order to deal with "personal issues".

Prosecutor Naeem Valli said the "sustained assault" had left Ms Ager with bruises to her knees, elbow, ankle and "a reddening around her neck".

The court was told Meighan "smelt heavily of intoxicants" as he assaulted her.

Meighan, of Narborough, originally denied an assault had taken place but after watching video footage, he told police he could not watch it any further because it was "horrible".

Mr Valli told the hearing the child "sounded panicked and afraid" while making the call and the victim could be heard saying "get off me, get off me".

He added officers described Ms Ager as being "visibly upset" while Meighan was said to be acting "aggressive" and unwilling to co-operate.

As CCTV of the attack was shown in court, Meighan wiped his eyes with a tissue and held his head in his hands.

Defending, Michelle Healey QC said Meighan felt "deep remorse" and a sense of "personal humiliation - but he has nobody but himself to blame".

She added he had faced a "battle with alcohol" and that "to lose the opportunity to perform with the band he loves and people he loves is a huge personal loss".

Kasabian formed in 1997 and reached the UK charts with their third single Club Foot in 2004. Major success came with albums Empire in 2006 and West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum in 2009, which featured a string of hits including Underdog and Fire.

Meighan's departure leaves guitarist Serge Pizzorno and bassist Chris Edwards as the only remaining founding members.

After their first album, I thought they were going to be amazing. Instead, one of their main songwriters left and they became a bit of a lager band. Still good in patches, but not what I thought they were going to become. I saw them in Cardiff when their first album had just come out - the crowd were respectful rather than beered-up twats and Kasabian were excellent.

Anyway, all this to say... this is a sad way for them to lose their lead singer. Also, strawberry float anyone who assaults women.

200 hours community service and not even a restraining order seems to be getting off pretty lightly for what sounds like a serious assault.

Sounds like he’s bashed his ex whilst pretty wasted, so it sort of was due to a drugs or alcohol problem.
Hope he sorts his life out but not because of the band, in my opinion - post debut - Kasabian are crap.
And swedging at a girl as well, disgraceful.

What a banana split.

I'll replace him if they want. All you have to do is wiggle your tongue and shout LET ME SEE THISE strawberry floating HANDS! every 5 seconds.

It's from the Daily Mail so... you know... but according to them, his ex didn't support the prosecution and in fact wants him back. Despite this assault being suspected of not being the only one that occurred during their relationship. Double aaaargh if true.

EDIT: According to The Grauniad:

Watson said Ager had not made a statement to police and “does not appear to support this prosecution” but added that police had been called to the address before and there was “evidence of previous abusive behaviour”.

While not as banana splitish as Meighan, the rest of Kasabian are strawberry floating twats for that statement they released yesterday. It made it sound like Meighan was having mental health issues, not that he was a violent domestic abuser. Were they hoping he'd get off and it would never be mentioned again?

Quite common in cases of domestic abuse/violence unfortunately. That’s why we don’t have the concept of pressing charges in this country - CPS decides what to prosecute and what not to.

This seems like a clear cut case of this guy being a prick. Hopefully he learns from this, stops drinking, and can turn his life around.

They should have just left it until today, and said something along the lines of how they hope Tom gets better but that they unequivocally condemn his behaviour. It's the fact that they tweeted yesterday... it leaves a really bad taste in the mouth. I have a feeling they will regret this PR fail.

Btw, though, The Sun has spoken to 'a source' who said: “The guys all love Tom dearly, but the current situation is untenable. Sadly parting ways for the time being was the only answer.”

Hmmmmm. Am I too cynical for thinking that the roadmap for him coming back is already in place?

Exactly. It's pretty damn clear that they don't give a damn about the abuse, they only cared about their image. And then strawberry floated it completely by releasing such a shitty statement.

Twats.

Agree. I'd say maybe they didn't know the full story but the timing, the day before the court appearance, feels very intentional.

As well as the hits, the first album had some pretty awesome synth stuff that pointed towards a more interesting future than going headlong for commercial success.

Yeah. Sounds like they’ve found out about it, turfed him out and then scrambled back in to cover themselves.

As someone above said though, the strawberry floater will be back behind the mic for them after a stint in rehab and a year off to “clear his head.”

They were great live. Saw them supporting oasis in the millennium stadium when I think their third album was just out, so the set still had a lot of great songs in. Saw them on some recent festival footage and it looked like a classic drug fuelled band who'd gone so far up their arsed. The guitarist bopping behind a keyboard, jumping all over the stage in circles. The singer sweating, swearing constantly and looking coked off his bollocks. Awful stuff.
