It does it automatically once you get to a certain height.

538,000m isn't high enough?

Apparently not. Basically the K rolls over once the gauge is full.

Is there any way to break free of the planet's gravity? Or get to the moon?

There's no moon yet, but stranding your Kermen in space is a definite possibility.

Okay... and where can I get extra rocket parts? Videos show lots of bits I don't have. Or are they buggy?

Since the planet is the only gravitational body, I'd imagine the way the physics is calculated it's always affecting you no matter how far away you get. So no matter the speed or distance, what goes up must come down. Unless you're in a stable orbit, I doubt it has the minuscule drag that real space has.

They're mods, and can be obtained from a variety of sources. The most obvious of which is by registering on the forums over at http://kerbalspaceprogram.com/forum/index.php. As they are mods, there's a fair bet that many of them are buggy. But cool.

But I've managed to get a surprising amount of mileage just out of the stock parts.

Originally named the KSP Time and the Rani, I have renamed the design to honour this momentous occasion!

I've adapted this design; I used an extra liquid fuel, and several extra solid fuels. I'm 50 minutes in my journey, 2199k high and I'm still going 589m/sec. God knows if I can get your newer design to work.

I've achieved orbit!

Albiet, a madly eccentric one. Haven't reached my apogee yet, but I'm currently at 600k and rising fast. Started at a mere 170k, which logic dictates should be my perigee.

I'm also going at over 2000m/s, and that's my on the downswing of speed. If they introduce a moon, slingshotting off an eccentric orbit would be a good way to get there fast, just like real life.

I hope this program advances and develops over the years; more atmospheric conditions, a more realistic world map, more rocket parts, the moon, more landing gear (balloons), maybe even challenges; land on a passing asteroid and return safely etc.

I'm pretty sure it will. I mean, look how far Minecraft has advanced since we first started playing.

2236k appears to be the limit of my rocket's capabilities, with 559m/sec the speed required to resist the pull of the world's gravity while not moving forward.

According to my calculations I should reach 5500m/s on my closest run with the Earth. If I still had fuel I could add to that, break orbit and go strawberry floating miles.

I hope somebody mods this to let us add nuclear and satellite payloads. :shifty:

Has anyone beaten my 2600m/s max speed yet? May get back into this in a few days and better it.

I'm pretty sure I beat that earlier but I can't be sure.

I got close doing this, can't remember how fast I got though. Now I'm 3800km away from Earth, after an hour. I don't think I can be bothered completing a rotation.

I was in and around that earlier with the Movania, but then I botched the reentry and got stuck in orbit with no fuel left. :fp:

You can probably "fake" a satellite launch using a fuel cannister and it probably won't be long before someone actually mods dummy payloads, if they haven't already. It guess it'll be a while before we see missions and suchlike though. The engine seems to get a bit flakey once you start getting further out from the planet.

I got to over 3,000m/sec on my re-entry into the planet's atmosphere, but it became greatly reduced after I opened my chute.

My rocket:

Actually, the atmosphere itself will reduce your speed. Popping the chute helps a little, but the real kicker doesn't come 'til about 500m when the chute opens.

On the plus side, it does mean that - once you ditch all your engines, have hit the apex of your climb, or break orbit, you can pretty much just pop the chute and let gravity take you back planetside unattended.

Just hit 2920m/s on launch. Launch speeds are what I'm interested in, mainly because my rockets don't tend to return to earth.

That was with my model from page 1, but with two sets of solids for an extra layer simply to get me up to 30m/s and off the launchpad. I reckon on a perfect run I could hit 3000m/s on that setup.
