PostKilling Animals in Games - A Discussion
by Preezy » Wed Feb 06, 2019 11:00 am

Prompted by a recent Eurogamer Article about one journalist becoming uneasy with killing animals in games, it got me thinking.

I hadn't really considered it before, but I definitely shy away from killing animals if I can avoid it, especially horses and dogs. Playing through RDR2, you're given ample opportunity to obliterate every animal you come across. I must have killed hundreds of people in that game at this point - good, bad and ugly. But animals ehhhhh notsomuch. I have accidentally fired my weapon and killed a horse outside the train station in Valentine and it was pretty grim, the poor thing stumbled and whimpered then slumped into the water trough, all while my own horse got unsettled and eyed me up with fear and loathing (at least that's how I took it). Felt pretty bad about it as I high-tailed out of town :slol:

So, how do you treat digital animals in games? Just another line of code to be shotgunned, or should they be allowed to roam free without fear or getting hit by a train, blown up by a mine or skinned and paraded around on a stick to impress your womenfolk?

Discuss.

If I really REALLY have to I'll kill an animal but generally I don't. I accidentally shot a horse in the head in RDR2 the other night and felt terrible but on the flip side, in Far Cry games I kill lots of things for better loot but in FC games pretty much everything wants to kill you.

For me it just depends on the game.
Sometimes I go out of my way to not hurt any and I'm not even sure why.
In the few Far Cry games I've played I really try and avoid killing wildlife but in Assassins Creed I've been known to try and shoot birds out of the sky just because I can.
I don't like the idea of specific hunting games at all and I'd really enjoy an updated version of Afrika where you just go about looking for photo opportunities as I think a next gen version could look amazing.

One man should not have this much power in this game. Luckily I'm not an ordinary man.

I’ve never played any of those Cabela games but I do rather enjoy the hunting missions in RDR and the Far Cry games.

Chalky is a bloody ruthless animal murderer  .

On Vermintide 2 there are pigs that are just standing about minding their own business and he always sets them on fire even though you get nothing for doing so. I will admit that I'm pretty sure I pointed them out to start with but he's since been on a mission to make sure they all get cooked :x .

Videogames aren't real

Obviously from a storytelling perspective killing an innocent dog makes you an irredeemable, heartless bastard, but sometimes that's what you're going for right?

If it was an option in Animal Crossing I'd take it.

I wasn't taking the chance that they were helping to spread the plague. :shifty:

To be fair some of them were slippery bastards. Quite a few managed to escape to tell their friends of the Orange suited Dog murderer.

I shall be resuming the Cull as of tomorrow when the Beta opens up.

If there's no reason to do it I won't, but if the game drops like meat or something for it like in Zelda, sure why not? Like this also applies to people in games; I don't find it fun to just randomly kill entities because I can

This is sort of a non topic considering how gladly videogames have always pushed players to kill people in them anyway lmao

theHunter: call of the wild is in my steam library. Maybe there will be dlc for me to go up to bears and give them scritches and belly rubs.

There are some games that force animal "budies" on you and tbh I would kill them as they are always aweful.

I stopped playing the first Red Dead Redemption when it required me to kill a rabbit.

In Assassin’s Creed 3, on the other hand, the hunting was for survival, so I went with it. Same with later Tomb Raiders.

I have no problem killing people in games, because people are mostly twats anyway.

I literally have no feelings about it either way. It's not something I've ever thought about till now, and now that I have I really couldn't care less.

In much the same way I'm quite happy to butcher in-game people with gleeful delight, animals are equally fair game and I spent many happy evenings chasing stray dogs around in The Division before I "put them down".

In RDR2, I always play as honourable as possible. I only hunt if I intend to use the meat and pelt etc. I don't kill them just for the hell of it.
