What does wanting to start again have to do with feeling like a plastic bag? That gif is really confusing me

Well you clearly aren't a firework.

I’ve definitely missed something here

Isn’t this originally from Japanese newspapers yet all the Western agencies are saying there’s no merit to the news?

The source I saw that said he was vegetative was from the Jerusalem post, but their source was someone in Japan. Western papers said that he had been in critical condition after his heart surgery but he was now getting better.

North Korea and South Korea have exchanged gunfire around a southern guard post - the first time there has been gunfire at the border since 2017.

The shots were fired across the border by North Korean troops at 7.41am and South Korea responded by broadcasting a warning and firing two shots at the North, according to the South's joint chiefs of staff.

Initially the possible death seemed like good news to me, potential liberation of a country. But reading about the potential power vacuum and civil war this could lead to and perhaps it's welcome news he has returned. Talk about stuck between a rock and a hard place!

People said the same about his grandfather and then his father.

I'd imagine the Kim family are essentially figureheads anyway and the real power lies with a few high ranking officials in the military.

Difference is, they had clear & obvious male successors in line. This is the crutial difference in this Dynasty. Kim has absolute authority because it is his undisputed birth right, as it was for two generations before him. There is nobody with this clear indisputable line of succession at this time, so the risks are much higher.

Plus, more nukes.

I think his sister is vicious and psychopathic enough to take his place, and destroy pretty much anyone who tries to come at her. There's a reason Kim Jong Un trusts her so much.

Yeah but as Laga says the military rule the country, the Kim’s are just figureheads. The sister can rule in his place with the military doing the actual running of the country.

It’s probably going to come to horrific bloodshed in the end though, no matter who’s in charge.

I don't believe that the military rule the country, or that the Kims are just figureheads, in fact that really goes against my understanding of the country. I would suggest Kim Jong-Un executing the defence chief using an anti aircraft gun would be decent evidence to show that is not the case, among other things.

Purging and executing military personnel doesn’t prove or disprove whether Kim has full control in N Korea.

And it’s never been confirmed that that defence chief was even executed, it’s certainly doubtful that an anti aircraft gun was used.

Maybe. It is true that very little can be proven about such a secretive state. I must admit, I've never even read anyone question his absolute authority before & a Google search has found a couple of articles questioning it. I know one thing, I wouldn't want to be the one to publicly correct him on his home ground! Interesting quote from his wikipedia page which shows just how highly he is held in NK society (at least, publicly)

Following his father's death, Kim Jong-un was hailed as the "great successor to the revolutionary cause of Juche",[71] "outstanding leader of the party, army and people",[72] and "respected comrade who is identical to Supreme Commander Kim Jong-il",[73] and was made chairman of the Kim Jong-il funeral committee. The Korean Central News Agency described Kim Jong-un as "a great person born of heaven", a propaganda term only his father and grandfather had enjoyed.[74] And the ruling Workers' Party said in an editorial, "We vow with bleeding tears to call Kim Jong-un our supreme commander, our leader."[75]

I think all that stuff is just waffle. I can’t imagine many citizens believe it and those in the higher echelons certainly wouldn’t.

I’m sure Kim has a lot of power there, but I bet the military wouldn’t hesitate to take him out if he seriously threatened their power.
