Waiting for Kingdom Hearts 3? Prepare to wait a lot longer

In a recent interview with Ultimania (helpfully translated by the folks over at Kingdom Hearts Insider), Director Tetsuya Nomura stated that he has multiple ideas for the next Kingdom Hearts game, and that it's likely that the next game he starts working on won't be the hotly anticipated Kingdom Hearts 3. While discussing the upcoming Birth by Sleep and its connections to the original Kingdom Hearts (as Birth by Sleep takes place before the original game), Nomura stated that BbS would contain a lot of unanswered questions. When asked if Kingdom Hearts 3 would be the game that bridged Birth by Sleep and Kingdom Hearts, he responded as follows.

Who knows? I already have ideas for the next installment. But since Birth by Sleep isn’t even out yet, I don’t have to think about it until awhile from now. Recently everyone kepts asking me when I’m planning on coming out with KH3. Even though I’m currently busy with Final Fantasy Versus XIII, I’m also thinking that it’s almost time to start thinking about it seriously. Though it’s entirely possible that the next game in the series won’t be KH3.

While I don't think this necessarily means that the game hasn't been started at ALL, it's definitely a sign that fans of Kingdom Hearts will be waiting a while before KH3 is finally released, particularly since it sounds like yet another spin-off game is being made first. When asked about what this mystery spinoff game might be, Nomura only said that it would be "more official than a side story" and that it is a "mystery KH". Regardless of which game ends up coming out first, Nomura suggests that both games are not very far along in the development process.

The full interview goes into a lot of detail about Birth by Sleep, coded, and 358/2 Days, so if you're interested in Kingdom Hearts it's definitely worth reading.

Does this 'mystery Kingdom Hearts' sound appealing to you, or are you ready for them to stop messing around with spinoffs and finally make a true sequel?

I need to finish Kingdom Hearts II.

I have completed the first one several times, including two run thrus on Expert difficulty. But I hate the card-based battle system that Chain of Memories used and I just end up button-bashing my way through the cards, hoping that the battle will end quicker. It's not the only card-based RPG that I hate though (there was one on the gamecube but I've forgetten what it's called.)

I came close buying the japanese only "director's cut" of Kingdom Hearts but I put it off as the prices for that is pretty high, especially the entire game is in Japanese. I don't want to trudge through the game, fiddling about the menus to equip equipment and magic, and the in-game menus for attacking/magic.

Anyway, looking forward to replay KH1 then play its sequel... :D

Is KHII Director's Cut out in the US?

I have a sneaky feeling it's Jap only. (I may however be wrong)

Kingdom Hearts: Coded (Official Website)
Platform: Mobile

Square Enix revealed during Tokyo Game Show 2007 that a new mobile installment of the Kingdom Hearts Series was in development, entitled Kingdom Hearts: Coded.
Using the latest 3D mobile technology, KH: Coded explores Sora travelling through a whole variety of Disney worlds, on a brand new quest which takes place after the conclusion of Kingdom Hearts 2.

TGS 2007 - Press Release:
A Disney universe as vast as the mobile network awaits you.
In KINGDOM HEARTS coded, you will journey through a variety of Disney worlds on an exciting adventure brought to life by advanced mobile phone technology and gorgeous graphics never before seen on the platform. This marks the first collaboration between Square Enix and the Walt Disney Internet Group.

After the events of KINGDOM HEARTS, Jiminy Cricket returned to Disney Castle to organize his journal. While he arranged his records, his eyes fell upon a page with a mysterious message.

We must return to free them from their torment.

However, no matter how hard Jiminy tried to recall the source of the text, he couldn't remember. So the King digitized the contents of the journal and started an investigation. Within the world traced from the contents of Jiminy's Journal, a boy awoke on Destiny Island. It was the beginning of a new quest for a virtual Sora.

Some footage of Kingdom Hearts: Coded have recently surfaced around the net. Particularly, NicoVideo. DChiuch of KH13.com has been kind enough to upload it on Youtube for everyone. What's more that he's uploading a complete playthrough of the episodes that have been released. Currently, he's up to the Traverse Town episode. Translations aren't available at the moment, though.

KINGDOM HEARTS Birth by Sleep is the tale of a new trio of heroes, told across three scenarios utilizing the groundbreaking technology of the PSP. Exciting new features will be introduced on top of the traditional controls, game system, and visual style of its predecessors.

The Keyblade is said to hold phenomenal power. One legend says its wielder saved the world, while another says that he wrought chaos and ruin upon it. —from Ansem's Report (KINGDOM HEARTS)

Long before Sora took up the Keyblade, there were other Keyblade masters. One of these masters, Xehanort, disappeared one day along with his apprentice. This event proved to be a foreshadowing of great disaster to come. Aware of the threat, another master ordered his three apprentices to seek out Xehanort and his cohort.

An interview with Tetsuya Nomura in the latest issue of Japan's Weekly Famistu finally sheds more light on PSP's installment in the Kingdom Hearts series, Birth By Sleep. 1UP reports that, in the article, the series' creator reveals that the game's three main characters will be playable in their own, separate campaigns, complete with unique boss battles. Nomura also estimates that each character's play-through should take about 15 hours.

Famitsu's story also mentions that Birth By Sleep will incorporate the worlds of Cinderella and Lilo & Stitch, the latter set in deep space before the cute-yet-calamitous creature crash lands on Earth. Nomura notes that a release date for the game likely won't be announced until after Final Fantasy XIII's is, but that it's still expected to hit Japan this winter.

So excited about seeing more of this
