Thanks a billion everyone.

Enjoy this little piece of early concept art as a reward for your hard work:

Looks nice. I think you should have characters with upgradeable abilities and if possible a skill tree but that may be overly ambitious.

If I can't go in that water cave your game fails. Don't make it fully A to B, have some secret caves and things to find and places to explore.

I'm not sure if that really mixes well with the current theme of the game, but considering the game is still pretty far away from completion anything can happen. At the moment it's going to be a very simple game. You'll run mostly to the right and you cut up enemies in your path. Very simple controls, just two buttons (jump and attack).
When I first had the idea for the game I was looking mainly at the original Ninja Gaiden in terms of what I wanted the game to be like.

There's an invisible boat at the bottom of the steps by the cliffside tunnel.

Don't take this the wrong way, but I'm not looking for any input as to what I should or should not do with my game. I have an idea for how the game will look, how it will play and how the player will progress through the game's levels, all based on the kind of game I would like to play. All I need is reference material to know how to make playing the game fun, which you and others have provided and I'm very thankful for that. (although I'm shocked none of you have mentioned Castlevania IV)

And no, you won't be going into the water cave.
At least not through that entrance.

ps. But there will be secret places for the player to discover.

Who is the artist, and who is the programmer? That concept art is pretty nice, you've got a good artist. :D

What format are you thinking of making the game for?

I'm the artist, my friend's the programmer.

Windows, Mac and Linux at first... at least I hope we'll be able to do all three. Depends on my friend really.
The aim is also to make it really scalable, so maybe we'll get it on the iPhone/iPod touch and other mobile devices.

And if everything goes really well? XBLA.

I thought the fact you mentioned it in the first post pretty much removed the need to recommend it to you. ;)

I like that concept art (and the stuff you posted elsewhere). I will play this game.

Are you planning to release it like Cave Story? Just some free homemade game, pretty decent then shoot up to XBLA/iPhone like many people want to happen with Cave Story or just going straight into a retail area?

We'll probably release it as a demo which you then unlock with a small payment (like XBLA's trial games), but the game's way too early for any talk about a possible price point.

What is that? Bionic Commando? Didn't like the demo all that much.

My favourite genre. Try Astro Boy, Gunstar Heroes - pretty much anything developed by Treasure. Alien Hominid GBA is a gem. Viewtiful Joe/2 for your Wii.

Yeah, Rearmed.

Neither did I tbh, but once you get to grips (lol) with the Bionic Arm it gets much easier.

I might buy it, only I'm saving my points for Moving Pictures and Texas Flood on Rock Band.

I really wouldnt buy it until you've played right through and at least liked the demo a little bit, though.

Isn't that predominantly a side-scrolling shooter, though?

That's not a problem really. Anything side-scrolling is good. Of course if you know of something with some great platforming bits, or something that has great melee combat, then that's a preferred recommendation. But anything goes really.

And I've got Astro Boy. I love it, but it's a little too hard for me.
