Dizzy is flip screen on most platforms, though I think the NES games do some scrolling.

That said, I like flip screen games. Theres something to be said for the mystery of what lies on the next screen :)

Aren't you guys sort of looking in the wrong place for open world platformers.

When I think of games like that, games like Terreria and Starbound come to mind.
Although these may not be the kinds of game that they are looking for, as they aren't heavy on platforming elements.
Starbound has added dungeons that require a bit of platforming to get through in recent updates though.
While the worlds are pretty separate in Starbound, individually they are expansive and seamless.

Mohawk and Headphone Jack is a series of massive open world platforming levels, might be worth trying to emulate that? Was a SNES game.

Terraria while not specifically a platformer is good for this. (yay for more discussion!)

Symphony of the Night, available on PSN in the PSOne Classics range.

I think Guacamelee is supposed to be that style of game too.

Welcome to the forum!

Heck, I never saw this topic and I want to get into game making at some point.

La Mulana is meant to be massive.

Was a bit surprised to see this pop up again!
That game I was working on hasn't gone anywhere. It was just a bit too ambitious for a first game and it took me a while to realise that. I still really like the idea and would love to get back to it at some point, but it's just not feasible at the moment.

So far very few of the suggestions have been anywhere close to what I was hoping to find, and I think it's mostly down to the points TheTurnipKing brought up. Splitting a game up into rooms or areas is just so much easier and more convenient. Moving a room a couple room-lengths to the right or left and rearranging existing rooms seems a much simpler process than moving and rearranging chunks of the game world around (especially because the tools for moving things around in a grid are so much easier to conceptualise and build than something more freeform).

Terraria and Starbound look like the ideal candidates, but they're both procedurally generated. They're probably fine games, but not good examples of games with designed and crafted worlds.

Anyway, it doesn't matter now.

Ori and the Blind Forest comes pretty close. There are a couple of split off areas, as they're basically buildings you go into, but for the most part it's a completely seamless, continuous, beautiful world. :)

Nothing at all so far. I was making something some months back, and I'll probably finish that game sooner or later. It's certainly a more doable project than the one I was attempting in 2011.

Yeah, I need to check that out. Seems like my kind of game and it's on PC which I didn't think it was.

Neat. It even uses doors in almost exactly the same way I was planning to.

Treasure Adventure Game is awesome, highly recommended playing. You've got a lot to live up to if you're making something similar ;)

Castlevania 2: Simons Quest seems to fulfil the criteria. Although it's not a very good game apparently.

By the standards of the time of release, it's pretty good, has some glaring issues, such as incredible obscurity of many of it's puzzles and dubious translation of text, that were largely resolved by the time Symphony of the Night came out.
