Fixed an issue with rain visual effects

Only mentioned in relation to San Andreas, but the bad rain effect was in all 3 games. By the time I can buy the game physically hopefully they'll have patched most of the issues, then it can truly be a Definitive Edition.

For God sake! How are you meant to race when the game can't even keep up with your speed! Lagging all over the place and even freezing up as it tries to load... what, exactly? Seriously, it froze at the exact same point the four times I ran the lowrider race. It was only through the AI completely derping out that I even won.

Sleeping Dogs has a ton of races and they actually work properly.

Did I mention Sleeping Dogs is better than GTA btw? :)

Sleeping Dogs is fine but it's not better than every GTA game ever made.

Sleeping Dogs was better than GTA 4 but that's it.

Eh, it's frustrating, but it's one mission when everything else has worked fine. But I definitely will see once there's fewer games I'm juggling.

Really depends what you're judging them on, right? If you like Sleeping Dogs' melee combat then no GTA game matches up, but if you like flying planes and helicopters in GTA you can't even do that in Sleeping Dogs - just to give one example from each. Another mechanic I really like in Sleeping Dogs is the Pursuit Force style jumping between vehicles - you can do something similar in Just Cause 2, but not any GTA game. But then the vast majority of my time with GTAV was playing GTA Online, whereas Sleeping Dogs and Just Cause are singleplayer games.

Racing is a good point of comparison, I did like Sleeping Dogs' street races but GTA has more variety in the kinds of races it has.

Started up San Andreas from Gamepass last night and so far not really hitting any obvious bugs, but still very early days. Outside of that though it's not particularly impressive, so far I'd have said that besides the updated controls/checkpoints it could quite easily pass off as just running in a PS2 emulator. Even bug free there's a hell of a cheek asking £50-55 for these.

I think you're grossly misremembering what the PS2 versions looked like.

He is.
Finished up in San Fierro and I have a bad feeling the flight school is coming. Latest annoying bug - the game freezes every time I try to change/buy clothes or get a haircut!

It's better than this trilogy by a country mile.

Sleeping Dogs was so much better than GTAIV, hell I'd put it above V as I've never had a desire to actually finish that one even though owning it across multiple platforms :fp:

Same, what does GTA5 actually do better than other games? Literally production values.

Nobody is out there praising the story or gameplay  it's just "the world is so big and detailed"

The shitty gameplay speaks for itself and the story is just there so Rockstar can polish it's own ego by copying old films. I don't think there was a single genuine emotional moment in the entire game because everything always has to be undercut by a joke.

GTA5 is the gaming equivalent of the phrase 'no homo'

Like OR referred to, GTA is a game that is attempting a lot of stuff - all of the driving to be on point, it’s got to nail it’s 3rd person cover shooting, they’ve got stealth mechanics in there (albeit easily the shonkiest part), compelling characters and story, all of that in one cohesive whole. Largely it all comes together, which is what makes them special.

There's a certain look to the PS2 version of San Andreas, certainly in the opening portion of the game, that is missing on the other formats that really adds to the whole sense of time and place.

Sure, but there are plenty of games that attempt a similar level of things and don't gooseberry fool the bed.

The shooting in GTA has always been absolute ass, there's zero recoil to any of the guns and the game relies on lock on. Not to mention moving around on foot just feels awful.

Games like Sleeping Dogs, Saints Row or even Yakuza do a much better job in a lot of areas with far more limited resources.

It's a matter of priorities, they could focus on a smaller less complex environment and put more resources into making the game actually feel good to play but they'd rather have THE BIGGEST CITY EVER IN A GAME TM.

Even when they release updated versions, do they improve the controls or gameplay? Nope, here's some more animals because we're so realistic TM. Oh what every brand name and character in the world is satire? Just ignore that incongruence plz.

I think GTAV at least is like Skyrim in that if you break it down mechanically looking at each individual part, trying to find what makes it good, you won't find it. It's in how everything comes together as a whole where the appeal lives. GTA is a sandbox of slapstick comedy and benny hill car chases. The actual mechanics don't need to be fun for the overall combination to be funny. I don't particularly care how badly a digger handles when I'm using the scoop to flip up police cars that are ramming into me on the highway. I don't need my car to brake realistically when what I'm doing is braking to safely stop behind a ramp facing the sea so that eight police cars launch themselves over my roof and into the water. A big map with plenty of variety is beneficial in leading to more situations like that.

But it absolutely doesn't come together.

The city and mechanics try to be realistic but the characters, story and world building are drenched in satire and constantly poke fun at themselves.

It's like making a beautifully shot indy drama and then hiring Will Ferrel and Adam Sandler to play the main parts

If they made a GTA game with the tone of Red Dead it could actually be not a piece of garbage. Or heck go the other way and be more cheesy like the original games, as it is they try and straddle this line that just makes the entire game come off as insecure of its identity. As if having 3 protagonists wasn't enough of a clue.

And the examples you listed are available in a lot of open world games.

GTA5 is still fantastic, I played it for a bit last night after a very long time away and it was great fun.
