Later this month marks a very special anniversary for Rockstar Games: 20 years since the original release of Grand Theft Auto III — the game that set players loose in the sprawling, three-dimensional metropolis of Liberty City with a new and unprecedented sense of freedom and immersion. In addition to carving a new path for the open world genre, Grand Theft Auto III established Grand Theft Auto as a cultural phenomenon, alongside its two subsequent — and equally legendary — entries in the series, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

We'd like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all the Grand Theft Auto fans who have supported the games over the past two decades. Your love and appreciation for these games has helped push the Grand Theft Auto series forward with every iteration.

In honor of the upcoming anniversary, today we are excited to announce that all three games will be coming to current generation platforms later this year in Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and the Rockstar Games Launcher on PC. Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition will feature across-the-board upgrades including graphical improvements and modern gameplay enhancements for all three titles, while still maintaining the classic look and feel of the originals. We're extremely excited to share more about these groundbreaking titles in the coming weeks — stay tuned!

To prepare for launch, we will begin removing existing versions of the classic titles from digital retailers next week. For more information, please visit Rockstar Games Support. In addition, Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition will be coming to iOS and Android in the first half of 2022.

According to these sources, Rockstar is actively developing remastered versions of Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto San Andreas. All three of these games are being remastered using Unreal Engine and will be a mix of "new and old graphics." One source who claims to have seen a snippet of the games in action said that the visuals reminded them of a heavily-modded version of a classic GTA title. The UI for the games are being updated too, but will retain the same classic style. No details were shared about gameplay, but Kotaku has been told these remakes are trying to stay true to the PS2-era GTA games as much as possible.

Sources confirmed that Rockstar Dundee, a Scottish outpost and one of the newest studios at the company, is leading the charge on developing the remakes. Another source explained that the studio is heavily involved in not just the remasters, but is even helping Rockstar on developing the next-gen GTA V ports that are due out later this year. This lines up with information I had heard last year, after the studio was purchased by Rockstar Games. Before becoming Rockstar Dundee, the studio was Ruffian games and had previously worked on Crackdown 2, Crackdown 3 and assisted with development on the Master Chief Collection.

Plans around these remastered GTA titles have shifted quite a bit over the last year as a result of the ongoing covid-19 pandemic, and they might continue to do so until things are officially announced. Originally, it seemed that these remakes were going to be packaged together and given to players who purchased the upcoming next-gen ports of GTA V and GTA Online as a sort of bonus or "thank you gift" from Rockstar. Then plans changed, and the remastered trilogy was scheduled to be released earlier this year. However, plans have changed again, and now the remastered titles are planned to launch around late October or early November for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Switch, PC, Stadia, and mobile phones.

It appears the PC and mobile ports might slip to next year as Rockstar focuses on developing the console ports first.

Been hovering over buying GTA 3 and Vice City for ages. Really want to play them again but I'm worried how poorly some of gameplay will have aged. This is an instant buy for me on PS5 and if it runs well on switch I'd double dip.

I wonder if they will sort out the rights on the soundtracks? A few tracks got removed in re-releases didn’t they. Also hoping they will update some of the gameplay systems and controls.

Modern controls (just copy saints row or use GTA V) is all it needs.

I wonder what they will charge? £50 ?

More remasters planned (Red Dead Redemption) if this does well

Kotaku also reports that Rockstar Games has plans to develop new ports of games like Red Dead Redemption, but that whether these plans are realized depends on the success of the Grand Theft Auto remakes.

Gematsu and VGC have both collaborated the rumours.

Super Mario 3D All-Stars was £50 so there's certainly precedence.

As long the soundtrack and radio stations stay the same I might be in for £30 for all 3.

I've just posted this in the Switch thread, having not checked first for it's own thread. Though considering these are going to be hitting the Switch - a Nintendo console - I'd say it's newsworthy enough to be posted there as well (considering no mainline GTA has ever been on a Nintendo system).

I'll definitely jump into Vice City first.

Depends on how much work is going to be done. Graphics are one thing, but it’s the controls and lack of checkpointing that’ll really sour revisiting them.

Vice City is one of my favourite video games of all time so wouldn’t mind going back to it but I wouldn’t want to ruin the memories either.

I’d probably be very tempted if they were slightly remade, all original music in there, updated controls. Not too fussed about GTA 3 but Vice City and San Andreas are the highlight of the series for myself.

Seeing as this is coming to all consoles and sounds like quite a bit of work is being put into it, you would think they would be looking to get the soundtracks back to their original versions.

Looking forward to those who haven't played these since the ps2 days seeing how tiny the game map really is! I've got them all on pc and it's funny to drove end to end of the islands on the first 2 games in no time at all. San Andreas was the one with the crazy scope.

Got gta3 was just incredible back when it came out. I was obsessed with that game, it felt so real.

It was all the Easter eggs and hidden stuff that made these games interesting to me, I loved all the Bigfoot rumours and UFO sightings.

GTA III.

One of my fave things to do was finding the rare vehicles on the garage list to tick them off.

One of the main reasons I love early GTA games is that the licensed music feels like it’s had a lot of thought out into it. Loads of it is just perfect. I got into loads of different bands and artists through playing the PS2 games.
