Speaking of the 90s, I had this on earlier this morning:

Still contender for the best album of the decade for me, absolutely incredible piece of work.

Different Class is remembered for the banging singles but the back half of the record is where it shines for me. Great album. This Is Hardcore and His N Hers are also excellent.

Yeah what makes it stand out is just how strong it as a whole album. I Spy is such a great non single track as well.

I don't like the song common people, so I've never given them a chance. Will have to give this album a try.

Its so outrageously different to their earlier (and later) output which in all honesty I don't really like.

Its also utterly brutal on the ears at times (The lord is my shotgun) but also has some respite with a few 'gentler' tracks (Autobahn 66 and Some Velvet Morning)

Love it.

One of the greatest albums ever made. Putting me in a great mood on a sunny morning.

Orbital - Orbital (1991)
10/10

First time I've heard the entire album and I've immediately fallen in love with it, its just superb and almost unbelievable that it was made at home by two teenage (at the time) brothers.

There's some absolute bangers on this album, my favourites being Chime, Oolaa, Steel Cube Idolatry and Belfast.

As a fan of electronic music in general I feel slightly ashamed to have never listened to it until 30 years after it was released.

SG Lewis - Times
9/10

I think this guy has worked with people like Dua Lipa in the past but this is his first proper album and it's a strawberry floating brilliant effort, that I can't stop playing.

Feel good bangers with immediate hooks, it's a shame this was released when every dancefloor is closed. It's a great mix of house, disco and funk, with a glossy production that all fits together perfectly and sounds retro and modern at the same time. Daft Punk influences definitely in there too. Great stuff.

Math rock and jazz fusion, which works far better than you'd expect. A fascinating listen.

8/10

Amazing album. Very important to that 90s big dance electronic sound but I think Orbital are usually overlooked when compared to The Chemical Brothers or Fatboy Slim etc

I saw them at a festival a few years ago and it was a great experience.

Sabaton-esque historical metal from Judicator, telling the story of the life of legendary East Roman (Byzantine) general Flavius Belisarius, who reconquered swaths of former Roman territory for Constantinople just a few decades after the Western Roman Empire fell. To the right of the playlist you'll see an interview about the album, conducted with the principle songwriter of Judicator by a History of Byzantium listener. It's a pretty good interview, honestly, I enjoyed it and would recommend to anyone interested in the subject matter.

I'd give it a very solid 7/10.

I always rated 'Flying in a Blue Dream' higher than 'Surfing with the Alien' but after recent re-listens SwtA album probably nudges ahead a little. FiaBD overstays its welcome a little and has a few not so great tracks. SwtA is probably about the right length and I can't really name a track I dislike.

8/10 for Surfing With the Alien
7.5/10 for Flying in a Blue Dream

Very obviously 80's and I love it, sounds vaguely like Fleetwood Mac in places.

Guitar work is sublime.

I've never been a big fan of Tom Odell, his music, which I've always seen as nice but dull ballads has pretty much washed over me previously but I heard the title track from his new album Monsters and found it really intriguing so gave it a go. Seems to be a bit of a departure for him-especially judging by the reaction from some of his long term fans I've read online. It's quite an experimental album-uses synths and lots of vocal effects in places which at first I found a bit hit and miss in places but it's all really grown on me. Even some of the weirder transition moments between proper songs. It's dark, bleak and feels brutally honest in places. Listening to it gave me a similar feeling to watching Bo Burnham's Inside in that it captures the shared anxiety we are living through. Fascinating but troubling at the same time.

Every time I hear Tom Odell I think of this.
