Spider-man Homecoming 7/10 - Funny, entertaining action superhero flick. Really enjoyed it. Felt like your typical action packed marvel film with a generic villain in terms of their role and plot line, but the performances's were good from all the main cast - Keaton, Holland and RDJ. I liked Hollands buddy/side kick friend too, good humour from him. Also Mary Jane was smoking :datass: Could possibly stretch to give this an 8/10 but it felt like a single watch kind of film for me. Can't really compare to the older spideman films are I've not watched all of them and can't recall the other decent ones all that well. Probably around the same just this one is much more amusing and holland a better actor.

End credits - Can't believe I got trolled at the end by Captain America for staying till the very end :slol: :fp:

I watched a few films on the plane a week or so back. Was pretty bleary eyed at the time so you can probably add a mark or 2.
Rogue One - Although I was a massive fan of Star Wars as a kid, watching it now makes me think it is basically a dark fairy tale for kids. The acting is pretty terrible (in all of the films) and this is something you don't really notice as a kid. So onto this. Acting is of the same "quality" I expect from the films and the characters are the usual split of good guys, bad guys and the main hero/heroine. There is one main difference in this film though and I hope they will continue this theme.
All of the heroes die.
This will be on Now TV soon so I will watch it again and see if I still feel this is better than the other films.

They pretty much had to kill the heroes in my opinion, otherwise it would beg the question where were they in the rest of the films? Regardless though, the ending fit the tone of the film well.

Yeah, you are probably right that they kept it tidy rather than being braver with the story. I was very impressed with the CGI Carrie Fisher and Peter Cushing. We can't be too far away from a time where actors are no longer necessary.

Baby Driver

Thoroughly enjoyed it despite certain plot developments and actions by characters that didn't make sense. 7.5/10

Yeah, watch that on a big screen and see if you have the same opinion.

It might even be S1E1, so if you don't like it, you've basically seen the best bit anyway.

Gladiator.

Still an absolute classic. Arguably Crow's finest role.

"Are you not entertained?!!"

9/10.

War of the planet of the apes - 9/10

Brilliant end to an amazing trilogy. Trailers spoiled a lot of action moments but he story was fresh and interesting. Loved the new apes,. Winter and Donkey were standouts.

Really it'ss Cesar's movie and he was brilliant.

I think I still prefer the second film as Koba riding a horse shooting machine guns was a delight. However this is a better movie. Very dark, very sad at points and so well filmed.

The music deserves a mention too, 70s vibe which adds so much to each battle.

Not sure if it beats La La Land or Logan for my film of the year but it's definitely the best trilogy since The Dark Knight.

Wish my image sig would work

War of the Planet of the Apes 7/10- I quite liked the first third/half about up until they find the base but I thought the final 2/3rds/half was too much generic summer blockbuster which I didn't find too interesting.

I loved the first third, thought the middle third dragged a bit, and liked the last third. The ending was great, and it really annoyed me to hear they're already planning a 4th.

Oh, and, um, this:

https://feministfrequency.com/2017/07/1 ... -the-apes/

Anyone who saw me go off in The Last Night thread should know my feelings about feminism (ie if you're not a feminist you're a dick) but the review above from Anita Saarkesian...strawberry float. All I can see from it is that she went in to the film actively looking for something to hate: she calls out the lack of women (fair point, to be honest) but then calls the film racist and rails against how unsubtle its putdown of Gung Ho America it is. Urgh. Total trash.

What would be truly radical and wonderful would be to someday see a blockbuster that asserts that understanding, compassion, and cooperation can overcome, and that we can happily share the world with those who are different from us, though not so different as we may have once thought.

She ends with the above. Prior to this she criticises the film for it's violent ending, despite earlier in the article recognising that the film's message is "violence begets violence." Then she writes the ending quoted, ignoring that the whole strawberry floating point of the whole strawberry floating trilogy (and the way this film strawberry floating ends!) is "Apes together strong" and that it's the inherent humanity and compassion of the apes that leads them to dominance, not their enhanced intelligence or the human targeting virus. There's also the whole subplot with the mute child who, despite not being an ape, is taken in by Maurice and Caesar as they are inherently compassionate and seek to, yes, "happily share the world with those who are different from us, though not so different as we may have once thought."

I'm all for her commentary on gender, but a film reviewer she is not.

She completely misses what is essentially the entire point of Nova. Her character offers hope of a peaceful co existence, despite mankind's step down in being the apex species on earth.

I don't know much about Anita Sarkeesian and what she does, I've stayed clear of Gamergate, and to this day, I have no idea what it was all about. She's clearly not very good at being a movie critic though.
