Man, this is a hard film to assess. THe final half-hour is great entertainment and makes up for a pretty boring hour in the middle. I liked the styling and most of the presentation but I found the main characters to be so dull and I think that's due to the script rather than acting ability.

The lead character, Jyn Erso, barely seemed to be alive throughout the film; this was a it terrific opportunity to see a female lead in such a popular movie franchise but I feel that the story and the lines have let her down. Jyn's main supporting character, Cassian Andor, fares slightly better although, again, the script is pretty mediocre. My favourite characters were the blind Jedi guy amd the ex-Imperial robot who assisted them.

There are some nice touches; the costumes and scenery are neat and Vader steals the show with a genuinely iconic presence. The surprise digital appearances by Peter Cushing and Carrie Fisher turned out far better than I would have anticipated.

I did enjoy the film although, for me, that is due mainly to the exciting action in that final thirty minutes and the well-done links to the original film.

6/10. Better than the prequels but not up to The Force Awakens.

Couldn't agree much more with this, althought I found the CGI characters were firmly in the uncanny valley. It's an interesting story and there's some decent world-building, but it does almost nothing with the characters, and it's only the standard of the actors that makes you give even the slightest gooseberry fool about them.

The Greatest Showman

It is essentially a big fancy episode of Glee.

Power Rangers 2017 - so very mediocre. Some nice effects but it's beyond dull at times. Also ruined Goldberg and the practical suit effects which were timeless and full of charm.

It's a Wonderful Life - 9/10

Baby Driver.

Brilliant. Loved it.

The Foreigner.

Jackie Chan in one of his more serious roles, taking on the IRA after his daughter is killed in a terrorist explosion.

Pretty good film with a more realistic take on the martial arts as opposed to Chan's trademark slapstick choreography.

Kill Bill Vol 2 10/10

Currently watching on Dave, seen it so many times but I never tire of watching both films. My film nirvana.

Kong: skull island - 8/10. Much better than I expected, really enjoyed it. I liked the various homages to Vietnam war films as well.

Had a bit of a film spree over Xmas;

The 400 Blows - 5/10 - mislead by the title No, a French film following a child rogue.

Annie Hall - 7/10, really liked the style (first Woody Allen film) dialogue reminded me of Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Bright - 5/10 - not as bad as the pundits say. Felt like parts of iRobot and Bad Boys mixed with an Orc.

Dunkirk - 8/10 - lost some of the effect at home, the firing guns in the cinema were really scary

The Foreigner - 7/10 - Best Jackie Chan film in years.

The Handmaiden - 7/10 - very good, did not read up on the film plot and was (pleasantly ) surprised by the films adult themes.

How To Train Your Dragon - 5/10 - standard animated fare, with few inspired parts.

It's A Wonderful Life - 6/10 - enjoyed the film but expected a masterpiece after all the hype I've read. My expectations were too high.

To Kill A Mockingbird - 6/10, WTF is Boo Radley's character about?! Like you'd let this guy round any sort of children

Lego Batman - 7/10 - tonnes of nods to everything Batman, way better than I expected.

Monster's University - 6/10; Original still the best.

Moonlight - 3/10 - difficult to watch to the end, tedious!

The Pianist - 9/10; fantastic film. Brutal in places, I've put off watching this film for years thinking it was going to be horrendously boring. Adrien Brody is just superb

The Red Turtle - 6/10; interesting animation but would have liked some clarity and more information during the film. Reminded me of RiME.

Bright = 3/10. It has an interesting world but then spends literally no time at all explaining any of it. Either make a fantasy film or a buddy cop film or a homage to Assault on Precinct 13 but don't try and do all of them in the space of a couple of hours because you'll end up doing none of them particularly well. Also, don't spend most of the time on the least interesting aspect (the Assault on Precinct 13, make it through the night bit) and ignore the other stuff. I mean, there was a strawberry floating dragon flying around the skies of LA and it was literally on the screen for a second. I get that the fairytale aspect is supposed to be everyday life for the characters in the film but the audience needs some kind of context. As a precursor to a film series (though it would work better as a TV series), it did little to set the scene.

War of the Planet of the Apes - 8/10

It kinda sags in places on a second viewing, but it's still a good show. It does tonnes of stuff really well.

The CGI is strawberry floating jaw dropping at times. I can't remember the last I was really bowled over by CGI. Dawn and this one push the envelope so much.

Kong: Skull Island 8/10

Really enjoyed this(I have sky movies too). Toby Kebbell was really good, as was John C Reilly and most of the supporting cast. There was a bit with a giant buffalo trapped under a helicopter - the buffalo looked a bit like my dog and I freaked out.

Round-up of my free month of Now TV movies.

Life : 6/10 - Pretty decent Alien knock-off with some great ideas but ruined by an awful CG beastie. As per usual.

Split : 6/10 - Semi return to form for Shyalaman I guess, but pretty standard slasher fare, boosted by McAvoy clearly relishing playing multiple roles. Loses a mark for that strawberry floating incomprehensible bullshit at the end. They might as well have had Yoda walk in and called it a sequel to Star Wars

Jason Bourne : 7/10 - Wasn't bothered about seeing this at all, but it was pretty darn entertaining. Call it a day now though fellas eh?

Inside Out : 8/10 - Well this didn't quite live up to my (admittedly fairly lofty) expectations. Weirdly for a Pixar film this didn't work as a kids film at all, the convoluted plot being totally lost on my seven year old. Some sections (particularly that abstract stuff in the middle) didn't work, and it wasn't that funny. Turned me around at the end with a charming denouement, and the closing credits had some hilarious moments. Still, mid-tier Pixar really.

Assassin's Creed : 3/10 - Why the hell do videogame films not work? Once again this completely disregards the source material in favour of muddy CG fight sequences devoid of tension. Bollocks.

John Wick 2 : 7/10 - Entertaining, but not a patch on the original.

Guardians Of The Galaxy 2: 8/10 - Great sequel to my favourite Marvel movie. A little bit patchy in places, and not enough Drax for my liking, but this was hugely enjoyable and laugh out loud in places (Baby Groot fetch quest had me in tears).

Logan Lucky - 6.5/10

It was little disappointing.

Agree with your sentiment, I thought the idea was good but the execution flawed. I still enjoyed it though 6/10 - Hopefully in the recently announced sequel they'll be able to flesh out the universe.

The Dark Tower 6/10- Was fine, seemed like an interesting idea but was a bit simple.

Jumanji (2017) 7/10- Nothing special, lacks something compared to the original but doesn't bring the name to shame.

The Greatest Showman 8/10 - I like musicals so probably take one off if you're ambivalent towards them, but enjoyable film with some good songs.

Rock of Ages 6/10- Enjoyable enough, liked Cruise's performance.

The Martian 8 /10 - I really enjoyed this. it was a nice surprise.
