Remains one of the best sci-fi films of recent times, massively misunderstood by basically everyone upon release. I mean, the good guys literally dress like Nazis, its social commentary isn't exactly subtle but it seems no-one picked up on it.

It somehow still looks strawberry floating amazing too, with the late-90s CGI actually holding up.

I watched Godzilla vs Kong last night and actually didn't find it too bad. Probably more enjoyable than either the two Godzilla movies in this 'Monsterverse'. I remember reading the Empire review which slated it, and don't think I really paid too much attention to what people thought of it beyond that.

I genuinely think there's an argument for Starship Troopers being the best sci-fi satire movie of all time. There's nothing been released since that can really occupy that space, and the subtle use of stuff like Reni Liefenstahl is just excellent.

It's that or Galaxy Quest, with the latter being a whole lot more on the nose (and generally having a lot less to say).

I still can't believe people took it at face value for so long. The opening shot, the opening shot, is straight from Triumph of the Will!

Hmm, have to say - everyone I knew back in the late 90s was well aware of its satirical intentions when I saw it at the cinema. Film reviews at the time were mentioning it too.

I guess there were some who took it at face value, but you always get a few who don't look deeper into things.

Yeah I can't really remember anybody taking it at face value, it wasn't very subtle about what it was doing.

I think over the years people have conflated the idea that Starship Troopers was underrated at the time of release with people apparently not understanding it's a very obvious satire.

Even I realised it was satire at the time, and I was even more of an idiot back then than I am now.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters - Has there ever been as big a gulf in quality between a film's trailer and the actual film? Absolute shite.

JoJo Rabbit

First time seeing it since its cinema release and it's as good as I remember, maybe even better.

Robocop was similar with the satirical content going over some peoples heads.

Same director isn't it it? (I'm terrible at remembering film director names).

Yeah, Paul Verhoeven. I think Troopers clinches it purely by svirtue of being slightly more relevant to modern society.

Just watched The Dead Don’t Die on Netflix. Never heard of it, but the cast looked incredible.
Honestly have no idea what I’ve just watched or what it’s purpose was. I’m not sure anything even happens in the film.

I was 12 when Starship Troopers came out and we hadn't gotten on to the Nazis in History yet, we were still doing the Magna Carta.

That's my excuse for just thinking it was boobs and space marines fighting bugs.

I do remember rewatching it in uni and being 'Hey wait a minute, this is doing a satirical!'

We watched that on the weekend, and had much the same feelings. When the cast names were popping up in the beginning, it looked like we were in for a great film, then it was just a whole lot of nothing.
