Leave the World Behind (2023 | Netflix)

A decent premise... but it goes nowhere. Annoying filming (why so many strange shot angles?), some odd product placement (a mention of Starbucks and a shot of the cup for absolutely no reason) and no answers to the situations that arise. Rather than being mysterious or chilling, I found it to just be frustrating. [2]

I think the strange shot angles were used in attempt to heighten the feeling of uneasiness for the viewer.

Agree with what you said about it going nowhere and bring frustrating though. Not a satisfying film.

Such a marmite film. I thought it was great.

Django Unchained

There Will Be Blood

Both were excellent as ever as the first viewing.

Dune Part 2 - 8
Better than the first I thought. Chalamet in particular is excellent, Christopher Walker is a strange casting choice. Ultimately the story leaves me a little cold though, as it did in the book.

No Hard Feelings - 8
Really fun comedy, balanced adult tone and humour with a heart warming weird story well. Did Lawrence really do the nude bits as that was certainly surprising.

Am I the only one who thought Oppenheimer is an over rated film of the year?

Yes it’s good but not that good.

Yep.

I guess she figured given everyone has seen it all at this point might as well get paid for it.

For me it's a modern classic, but no film exists that chimes with everybody the same way.

For example, The Shawshank Redemption I find to be overpraised. It's a nicely made film, but I never thought it was much more than that. I didn't like the narrator explaining to me what was happening and why every few minutes, it's far too lazy & literal. But it's apparently the best film ever made or something. Different strokes I guess.

I found it highly overrated.

The plot would often just get bogged down and grind to a halt (they could have easily lopped off an hour of runtime).

There were some good bits yes, but a lot of it was just dull.

Where does it get bogged down? I thought it was pretty engaging throughout and one of the best trial/courtroom films in years.

Kumite/10

I love the flashback at the start. The way it's edited makes it look like JCVD has been standing in that dude's living room, staring at the mantlepiece, for a straight 15 minutes

Bahaha yes! I thought the exact same!

Bless the actor playing young JCVD in those flashbacks, he was so bad :simper:

Delighted for the Oppenheimer crew. All richly deserved Oscar wins.
Especially pleased for Nolan. About bloody time.

Fantastic film. Deserves all the plaudits and awards it has received.

Logan Lucky (2017 | Netflix)

I saw this at the cinema on release and it was fun to revisit; it's a simple, entertaining romp - nothing too fresh or new but enjoyable. [5]

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent (2022 | Netflix)

Hehe, I very much enjoyed this; a fast, easy action movie in which Nicolas Cage sends himself up and has fun doing it. A lot better than I'd expected. [7]

Five Nights at Freddy's - 7/10 - A likeable lead and a decent story, though overall it's not quite as good as the ott Willy's Wonderland which was based off the same concept.

Thanksgiving - 7/10 - Great fun, lots of splatter and with a neat twist at the end.

The Hunger Games: A Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes - 2/10 - Ridiculously overlong, utterly dull, and with flat cardboard characters who have no chemistry or charisma (though not quite as bad as Home & Away), this literally sent me to sleep.

The Founder (2017 | Netflix)

The true story of the McDonald's restaurant chain. A pretty surprising tale if you're unaware; I won't say any more to avoid spoiling it. This kept my interest throughout. [6]

Venom - 5/10

Meh. I've seen a better Venom somewhere else than this film. :fp:

Dune Part 2 - 10/10
No notes. Villeneuve is operating on a different level right now. I say that as someone who wasn't crazy about the first Dune but this was an Aliens/T2-esque step up. Incredible all round, from staging, script, acting, set pieces, production design, sound design. It is an absolute feast for the senses.
