Red Sparrow.

I didn’t think I would enjoy it but I did. It was very good I thought.

Sorry about last night. I did genuinely watch Solo and I do sincerely believe it is better than TLJ, but I was pretty drunk and made that post for the sole intention of getting you to bite .

40 mins before I see Glass I decide to Google to see if there are any post-credit scenes. Accidentally read the end of the movie. :simper:

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs.

Wasn't quite sure what to expect, beyond it being a collection of western short stories. Very, very pleasantly surprised. A solid film that had a little something for everyone, or near enough. Would recommend.

I really enjoyed it. Just as I was really getting in to a story it'd move on to another.

Glass - 6/10 - I thought it was entertaining [watchable] not fantastic nor terrible although Shyamalan's cameo was! I thought Jackson's character arc was the poorest with McAvoy being fantastic and he had some great one liners [if you enjoyed Split, more of the same really].

Stan and Ollie - 8/10; not a massive Laurel and Hardy fan so some of the references were over my head but I found it to be a heartfelt and well acted biopic. Both main parts were great with Coogan just being my fave.

Bird Box 7/10- It was enjoyable but with some major flaws. Preferred the film The Mist which was a bit similar. I thought the fundamental issues was

The non-linear story telling. Take all the intrigue out of the movie by letting us know all the characters die. Should have killed off Sandra Bullock's character half way through instead.

Yup. Some stories I found just too mean spirited (the Liam Neeson one was pointlessly nasty) and others were just wonderful (the Tom Waits and wagon trail one especially).

Star Wars: The Phatom Menace - 7/10

The process of getting the kids to watch all of the Star Wars films continued this weekend with this and their first experience of the prequels! I've not watched any of the prequel trilogy for quite a few years so it was interesting seeing this again, I actually think it holds up far better than I expected and it's not actually as bad as it is made out to be.

Yes Jar Jar is completely full of gooseberry fool and strawberry floats up most of the scenes he is in and you could add at least a point to the score of the movie by creating a cut that almost entirely removes him, and the central premise of Palpatine taking power by using the trade federation to blockade Naboo is played out in a fairly dull manner. But there are some really great things about the movie too, it "feels" more Star Wars than either of the other two prequels to me, Tatooine obviously evokes the original movie but there are also things that feel a bit ... grittier and more real than they did in AoTC or RoTS. Little things like the outfits the Naboo pilots wear and the set for their cockpit which don't feel a million miles away from what we saw in the original movies, and the interior design of the trade federation ship which similarly feels like a sensible precursor to what the ships of the Empire would become. It feels like this belongs in the same universe as the original films, in a way that the later prequels didn't.

The end of the movie is really enjoyable as well in my view - cutting between the action across the assault on the palace/battle against the droids/space battle against the trade federation command ship/lightsaber fight with Darth Maul. Also Duel of the Fates from that fight is probably the best bit of music used in any Star Wars film. :datass:

I'd never argue that it was a great movie, but there is certainly fun to be had. My son reported that it was "the best one yet!" - so he's clearly inherited his fathers non-conformist approach to film appreciation! :slol:

Phantom Menace is easily the best prequel film

And Solo is definitely better than TLJ (and TFA)

New Hope = Empire > ROTJ > Rogue One > Phantom Menace > Solo > TFA > TLJ > The Clone Wars > Revenge of the Sith > Attack of the Clones

Fight me

Agreed.

But Jenuall’s 7/10 is madness. It’s a 5 at very best.

I've yet to watch TLJ, Rogue One or Solo, but would agree with your placement of everything else - only exception is that I would rate Empire as a better movie than New Hope.

I was considering a 6 for a while but it gets a bonus point just for Duel of the Fates.

Also that rating is based on the modern review scale where only numbers from 5+ are available. In this new world I don't even know what you would have to release to earn below a 5...

Something like John Wick perhaps? ;)

Empire is probably the better film, but it's so much a middle film that you need to see ANH first and ROTJ after. ANH gets bonus points from me for how it works as a standalone story that doesn't need prior knowledge and how it wraps itself up.
