What on earth does everyone see in Solo that I missed? All I saw was a bunch of terrible performances wrapped in a boring heist plot. :(

The process of getting the kids to watch all of the Star Wars films continued this weekend with this and their first experience of the prequels! I've not watched any of the prequel trilogy for quite a few years so it was interesting seeing this again, I actually think it holds up far better than I expected and it's not actually as bad as it is made out to be.

Yes Jar Jar is completely full of gooseberry fool and strawberry floats up most of the scenes he is in and you could add at least a point to the score of the movie by creating a cut that almost entirely removes him, and the central premise of Palpatine taking power by using the trade federation to blockade Naboo is played out in a fairly dull manner. But there are some really great things about the movie too, it "feels" more Star Wars than either of the other two prequels to me, Tatooine obviously evokes the original movie but there are also things that feel a bit ... grittier and more real than they did in AoTC or RoTS. Little things like the outfits the Naboo pilots wear and the set for their cockpit which don't feel a million miles away from what we saw in the original movies, and the interior design of the trade federation ship which similarly feels like a sensible precursor to what the ships of the Empire would become. It feels like this belongs in the same universe as the original films, in a way that the later prequels didn't.

The end of the movie is really enjoyable as well in my view - cutting between the action across the assault on the palace/battle against the droids/space battle against the trade federation command ship/lightsaber fight with Darth Maul. Also Duel of the Fates from that fight is probably the best bit of music used in any Star Wars film. :datass:

I'd never argue that it was a great movie, but there is certainly fun to be had. My son reported that it was "the best one yet!" - so he's clearly inherited his fathers non-conformist approach to film appreciation! :slol:

It's not a grand Star Wars adventure, but it's a decent heist film set in the Star Wars universe. The plot alone being mostly consistent sets it above TLJ, the writing being only competent sets it far above episode II and III. Personally I really enjoyed seeing the portrayal of war in the universe in a very different manner to the previous films, I thought Alden Ehrenreich did a commendable job as Han Solo (I believed it was the same character), and Donald Glover was an excellent young Lando. I liked Woody Harrelson's character too.

I didn't think much of Solo either.

I enjoyed Phantom Menace more.

Bros: When the Screaming Stops (BBC iPlayer)

I wasn't a big fan of Bros but my sister played their stuff and I liked a few of their tracks. I always felt they they got a bit of a raw deal from most of the press; the "build 'em up and knock 'em down" effect.

I haven't seen many films that showed the stars in such a good and bad light, warts and all. Both Matt and Luke really opened up their emotions and their minds. It felt genuine, at times uncomfortable but always honest.

Surprisingly good and definitely worth a watch if you are familiar with the band. [8]

:dread:

Emilia Clarke was teeeerrible though. Every time she appeared onscreen she was playing a completely different character, and not in a 'many faces of one personality' way, in a 'this character is a barely cobbled together list of strong woman tropes' way. Even Donald Glover was just doing a Billy-Dee impression. The only good performance was Phoebe Waller-Bridge and she was barely in it.

As for the plot, I did enjoy the brief war scene, and the look at the regular Imperial troops (Stormtroopers were always meant to be the Elite of the Imperial forces) but the everything else was completely forgettable, a criticism you cannot lay at the feet of TLJ, love it or hate it.

TLJ broke Star Wars forever with the Holdo manoeuvre and therefore broke the logic of all preceding films. And it ruined any chance of turning Poe and Finn into decent characters. And they completely changed Luke’s character again undermining the original trilogy ending, that like had eternal optimism that no one is beyond redemption.

It also killed off any developing plot hooks, a truly dire move for a “middle film”. Snoke was completely wasted too and aside from the throne fight there wasn’t much action. Phasma wasted again. Hux became a shouty joke. And they killed Ackbar the bastards.

So basically the worst Star Wars film. Yes I said it, clones is more enjoyable.

That's pretty interesting. I read some of the article, but why would people go out of their way to make a film seem less liked? I saw it talk about anti-feminism and what I assume was gamergate, but, it just seems, I dunno. Odd.

Yeah, there was a huge scandal about a lot of the anti-TLJ sentiment being stoked and circulated by Russian trolls, possibly at the insistence of the state. It was believed to be part of their generalised cyberwarfare campaign against the States which included all the Trump stuff.

Not liking the movie is fine, but the hate it got was completely unjustified.

I move for a vote of no confidence in TLJ and for a People's Vote on whether or not it should be purged from existence and for JJ Abrams to completely remake it.

It's just so bad :(.
