As good as Jaws.

I was kinda joking about the "modern review scale"... but it's in use here by everyone :dread:  .

Jawa, did you just accuse everyone of reviewing films wrong except for you? :slol:

Audacious move after giving Jaws a 7....

My reviews are based more on genre. To me a Marvel superhero movie cannot be judged on the same scale as a Schindler's List type of film. Both can be a [10], but they are not being judged in the same way.

No marvel film is ever a 10/10.

I understand the genre separation but surely a film like Shawshank is always going to be the only kind of film that's a 10/10. There are certain genre's that make a 10/10, and Marvel ain't one of them.

And yes, I actually think Marvel has become it's own genre now :o

Shawshank isn't 10/10 good though.

Of course a Marvel film can be a 10/10 if you are judging based on it being part of the superhero genre.

Pitting Endgame v Citizen Kane would be stupid. They are completely different genres and have completely different expectations.

Maybe it's just me.

If I walk out of seeing a film thinking it was a 10/10. I'm thinking, that was absolutely brilliant. That changed my life, that made me think, it brought tears to my eyes at points. It was just, something spectacular.

With a superhero film the best I've ever gotten was 'wow that fight at the end was pretty epic wasn't it.' Maybe I'm just searching for feels too much, and of course it's just my opinion. It's the same reason I'd argue a Horror or an Action film can never be a 10/10. It's just got to be a drama that induces the purest of human thought and emotion.

It's great but it's a 9. The only 10/10 Stephen King film I can think of is The Shining.

Everything is personal taste of course.

But I don't watch an Arnie movie thinking "hmm, I liked it, but did it change my life?". I'm judging it against other action movies, not the latest Oscar bait.

And there are a hell of a lot of movies that are clearly important, fantastically made and the height of filmmaking. But that I'd never ever want to watch again. Schindler's List destroyed me when I watched it and I'll never ever watch it again. It's clearly a 10/10. But give me Thor Ragnarok over it any day of the week.

I agree with this entirely. I don't think it's really possible to judge all genres and types of films on one scale, because they offer completely different experiences. You simply won't get the same things from Iron Man or Terminator 2 as you will from Schindler's List or The Lives of Others or whatever.

It's the same with any media really - is Master of Puppets not worth a 10/10 album score because it's thrash metal and not a classical composition? Or the Colour of Magic because it's fantasy and not historical fiction? No. So why should that be the case for films?

OK, I'll be upfront. A marvel film can't be 10/10 because they're not good enough. But I see your arguments and you're much more articulate responses than my own (which is oh so often the case for me on this forum!) and I get where you're coming from and agree.

I'd still argue a Superhero 10/10 can never be as good as a real Drama 10/10 though, cause superhero is just not as good of a genre ;-)

Exactly.

Give an opera snob (Denster :x ) a pop album and they'd give it a terrible score. Give a pop fan an opera album and they'd rate it as terrible. It's personal taste plus being able to separate the genres in your mind.

The problem I find with a lot of straight up contemporary film drama is so much of it is signposted and often tries too hard. I can sit there and see all the story beats.

Well acted obviously - although a lot of the time it's just close up shots of blubbering - but I can't shake off the feeling cinema serves its best purpose by existing to entertain and amaze first and foremost. If you can bring a little bit of emotion and heart along the way, that's great.

But any sort of heavy drama & introspection nearly always works better on the small screen for me. Even better, if it's with characters you've gotten to know over a whole series and built a connection with.

For you, sure. For me, superhero films(Marvel - I never liked DC) tend to represent beloved childhood characters being brought to the big screen so I'm a bit more susceptible to inflating their score in my own head.

Anyway to get back on topic a bit, I've watched Live and Let Die and now The Man With The Golden Gun on STV over the past two days, and strawberry float me they're really racist. Way more racist than I remembered. :dread:

Also, legit quote from Bond in TMWTGG - "I've never killed a midget before, but there can always be a first time!" - stuff that would simply never get into a film nowadays :slol:

Hustle. 7/10

A bit of a love-in to NBA players and a story we've seen before. Adam Sandler was great though and when given a serious role he can perform admirably.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

9/10 Still the best Star Wars since the original trilogy. The soundtrack in particular is a real stand out.

The further back you go the worse they get.

Connery, as much as I strawberry floating love him, has a Bond who is basically a racist, murderous rapist.

It's a series where you really need to be able to put a lot of the older ones in their historical context.
They're the very definition of "I enjoy them, but I don't condone their attitudes, biases or portrayals".

If you were to put out just about any of those original movies as a "New" film today, you'd be rightly torn apart for it.
