Palm Springs - 8/10

It's not as good as Groundhog Day, but what is? It does some interesting things with the time loop idea and manages to be entertaining and funny all the way through.

That's not a growth wrote:Palm Springs or The Mitchells vs. the Machines are two recent films I've very much enjoyed (the former is a bit like Groundhog Day, the latter has a similar tone to Lego Movie but with a lot more heart)

And on that note,

The Mitchells vs. the Machines 9/10 - I really, really enjoyed this. I only considered it because it got 5/5 on empire, but since it's produced by Lord and Miller I should have been more willing to give it a try as I love a lot of their work. The core family story spoke a lot to me, and it was hilarious and a lot of fun throughout.

I really liked Palm Springs, great shout. Will check out that Mitchells one.

Without Remorse - 3/10

Badly named because after wasting 90 minutes of my life on it I was filled with remorse. At best mediocre, but mostly awful. A paper thin and predictable plot that despite being extremely simple doesn't really hold up to any scrutiny, and Michael B Jordan looks as bored as I felt for most the movie.

My favourite bit was:

John's plan for the team to escape. With his wife and child dead and nothing to live for as a felon, he bravely volunteers to create a distraction for his team to escape. His team do escape successfully. With the plan a success, John then decides to mow down countless members of innocent foreign policemen to make his escape to save himself.

Avoid.

Cabin in the Woods is amazing.

It is, and I normally don't like horror films (with some exceptions)

Good ending. Has a lot of weight to it.

Men in back international. Hemsworth OK in his comic role. Tessa Thompson lacks chemistry in the film. I guess they thought it would work off the back of Thor 3, but it doesnt. MIBI meanders aimlessly and just doesnt work. A film that shouldnt have been made. An insult to Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith. Avoid. 2/10.

Jumanji: The Next Level - 6/10

Decent enough with some funny moments, the appearance of Nora was a nice touch too.

Yes I like the MIB Franchise but MIBI just didn't work for some reason. I think if you're doing buddy cop, you should probably just avoid casting the same actors in a different buddy cop, it's asking too much of them/the audience you're still buddy cops but you need to be different!

Finished off our MCU watching to get to Wanda Vision

Avengers Infinity War 9/10 - Still a 9/10 for me, goes at quite a quick pace story wise to fit in a lot of long battle scenes. (Girlfriend score a 5- too many battles)

Avengers Endgame 9/10- I appreciate this more than the first time I watched it. The emotional impact at the end almost gave me a tear. (Girlfriend score an 8)- On reflection I might prefer this to Infinity War (though I have seen IW more times).

They obviously both benefit from being the culmination of being part of something much bigger.

Ant Man & The Wasp 7/10- Still a 7/10 for me, just ignore all the quantum stuff and enjoy the ride. (Girlfriend score a 7)

And non-MCU

White Tiger 8/10- Quite grim in places but an interesting overview of Indian society with a decent plot.

Nomadland 6/10 - pretty miserable really but we'll acted and I'm guessing is an actuate depiction of that way of life

Palm springs 7/10 - felt like a black mirror episode and had some good laughs.

Firestarter 7/10
Rather decent film based on a Steven King novel, stars a young Drew Barrymore as a young girl with the power of pyrokinesis who has shady govement officials after her and her dad. It starts off quite fast paced, but drags on a bit in the middle, it ultimately delivers a rather explosive and enjoyable finale.

Agreed. Especially the miserable part! I found it a bit of a slog tbh. The cinematography was beautiful though. Also, I watched Zhao's Songs My Brother Taught Me (on Mubi) the other week and thought it was much better.

Also, got round to Master and Commander at the weekend. 8/10. Bettany was excellent, outshone Crowe for me.

Watched a bunch of MCU movies with the kids recently so there's are my ratings (most of these are at least the 3rd watch of the movie at this point)

Iron Man 3: 7/10
Thor: The Dark World: 6/10
Captain America: The Winter Soldier 9.5/10
Guardian's of the Galaxy: 9/10
Avengers: Age of Ultron 7/10
Ant-Man 8/10
Captain America: Civil War 8.5/10
Doctor Strange 8/10

Random observations based on this:

Dark World is still incredibly poor, but I actually quite liked some parts of it more than I recalled previously - Tom Hiddleston as Loki is, as ever, fantastic.

The more I watch The Winter Soldier the more I'm convinced that it is one of the all time great "blockbuster" movies, up there with the likes of Empire Strikes and Raiders of the Lost Ark. It's just such a well put together movie.

Age of Ultron is absolutely the weakest Avengers movie but is still better than the reputation it has.

Civil War now feels like an excellent on the job interview for the Russo's and the writing team to demonstrate how adeptly they can juggle a vast group of players - they basically nail it first time. And when you consider than this movie has to do some heavyweight lifting like introducing us to both Black Panther and Spider-Man, whilst properly developing the very slim versions of the likes of Vision and Wanda that we've seen up to this point it's amazing how slick the movie still feels

I found my kids reaction to the GotG really interesting - they were really unsure of them at first and after some questioning I think it comes down to the fact that for a long period of time it's not clear if they are good guys or not!

I think we were all really unsure of GOTG at first to be honest!
