Hateful Eight is excellent. Tarantino’s best since Pulp Fiction in my opinion, though it’s been a while since I saw Basterds. It’s biggest problem is that it’s overly long and a bit self indulgent in places. The first hour is strawberry floating banging though.

I guess the thing with Hateful Eight is how much weight you put on the single female character being the one subjected to the majority of the violence in the film. Personally I think it's unfortunate that she is the only female role, but that the violence is in context with the character and there is no misogyny intended. It's an uncomfortable watch in places though for sure.

Reservoir Dogs - 10
Pulp Fiction - 10
Jackie Brown - 9
Kill Bill Volume 1 - 8
Kill Bill Volume 2 - 5
Death Proof - 4
Inglorious Basterds - 8
Django Unchained - 7
The Hateful Eight - 7

After rewatching a lot of Tarantino's oeuvre recently the regularity of scenes demonstrating the extended suffering of women is definitely noteworthy. I'm not comparing these to scenes of men suffering in some futile attempt to prove him a misogynist, but like his foot fetish and trunk shots, scenes of women in distress are 100% one of his go-tos. I found the whole of Hateful Eight completely facile, but the torture of the one female character was by far the worst example of this trend of his.

I was more bothered by how bland and repetitive his writing was in that film, a cobbled together mess of his previous work. Similar to my thoughts on Del Toro (though Tarantino is far worse for it), his films have become extended love-ins to genres he's fond of, though they aren't particularly good examples of those genres. Django and Hateful were him finally pulling the trigger on all those Western influences, and I doubt they'll get a featured spot in the history of that genre.

She’s not the only female character. And given everyone else dies or is dying by the end of the film I would not say she is subjected to the majority of the violence in the film.

Yeah ok, the only female of 'the eight' then. I can see how someone could accuse the film of wanting to portray violence against women, and how it could be problematic for Tafdolphin some people.

I watched it last night. If you don't like women getting violently killed in movies, don't watch it I guess. Apart from that it's a great film.

I only watch films where women are violently murdered, so it's a 10 from me.

Preezy I have told you before, your homemade footage doesn't count as a film.

Transformers: The Last Knight

2/10

Ended up watching it on TV last night, and dear god, that London car chase (and accompanying scenes) was just abysmal!

The geographical continuity was some of the worst i've ever seen in a movie, one scene they'd be in the City of London, then the next shot was clearly Oxford, then it was a random US city complete with american street signs (even though it was supposed to still be London) before the next shot was the city of london again (and this was supposed to be the same damn sequence).

Oh and the use of Blenheim Palace as 'Germany' just felt bizarre.

Once Upon A Time In Hollywood - 9/10

This definitely won't convince any non-Tarantino fans. It's long, self-indulgent, and full of scenes and sequences that don't progress the overall story/plot. And there's a lot of feet. Even by QT's creepy standards.

If you're harsh you'd say it's a very long, elaborate setup for a decent punchline. But if you like Tarantino, there's a lot of brilliant stuff along the way. Very much a love letter to both Hollywood in the 60s and more specifically, to Sharon Tate. Di Caprio and Brad Pitt are both brilliant and their buddy relationship is really well played out. There lots of great, memorable scenes, including the finale, the fight between Randy and Bruce Lee and a superb tense sequence at the ranch that I won't say anything more on.

There's some great lines in it too:-

“I could be one pool party away from starring in a Polanski movie!"-is such a great line, whether you look at it as a dig Polanski and how he met the 13 yo he raped at a pool party, or a reference to the flamethrower pool scene, it works well both ways

So overall, I loved it...but leaving the cinema I heard both "that was weird" and "that was the worst film I've ever seen" :slol:

Definitely read up on Sharon Tate's death before you watch it too, if you're unfamiliar.

Alita: Battle Angel - 8/10

Not an especially deep or meaningful film by any means but as a fun, pulp sci-fi action film it does a great job.

The CGI is really well done, especially Alita herself who seems almost real (the big anime eyes being the main giveaway that she isn't) although sometimes veers towards the 'uncanny valley' with the less human looking cyborgs.

Really enjoyed it aside from the godawful song during the end credits.

Godzilla: KotM - 6.5/10

Definitely loses something in the transition to watching on TV instead of the cinema. The fights are spectacular but the human story is as meh as ever.

Still enjoyable though.

Once Upon A Time In Hollywood - 8/10

This is a film about film made by someone who loves films. There are clips and trailers littered throughout of fake movies and TV shows, or real movies where some characters have been replaced with Tarantino's.

It is long and without much 'story' and that will turn off many. Even Tarantino fans might not like this. Three guys sitting next to me in the cinema walked out about an hour in because there "wasn't much action".

It has plenty of comedy, and some rather tense scenes nearer the end, but it is rather a mismash of ideas that doesn't quite connect together all that smoothly.
The payoff is superb though. Knowing about Sharon Tate really helped. I'd strongly urge people to read up about Tate on Wikipedia if you're not familiar, before watching this.

So it's no Pulp Fiction, but there is a lot here to like. I'm just not sure it needed to be quite so long. It's basically two and a half hours of build-up for a 10 minute payoff.

I also watched Alita for the first time this weekend and would largely agree with all of the above.

An impressive spectacle with some good CGI, but also more entertaining than I'd expected.

Would be interested to see a sequel if it performed well enough.

Highlander III: 5/10

I mean I’m giving it five because really it’s strawberry floating terrible, but it’s so good at the same time. It’s peak ‘90s B-Movie trash. Up there with Mortal Kombat and Double Dragon in the nonsense stakes.
