Johnny Mnemonic is absolutely brilliant - it's big budget trash film making on a scale that couldn't have been seen in any other decade.

There are genuinely good, similar movies out there though. I like Strange Days - another film that's not without it's problems but works much better.

It's a 10. You're welcome.

It's honestly one of my favourite films and I swear I spot something new each time I watch it (last time was the fact that the scissors the Nihilists are chasing the Dude with in his dream are from a painting on Maude's wall).

It's brill.

I was watching on a plane on my ipad with families around me, so maybe that may have skewed my thoughts a bit. If I was in my own room and able to look at tits and drug abuse without feeling awkward I'd have probably felt better.

I'll give it a rewatch some time.

Us 7/10

Not on the same level as Get Out, but a decent thriller nevertheless. Peele does have a great sense for mystery and that slow pull back until everything is revealed. The reveal here was, again, not on the same level as his first film though. There were too many logical inconsistencies with the idea of The Tethered and a 4 minute exposition dump wasn't enough to do the idea justice. It also wasn't that scary, hence me calling it a thriller rather than a horror film, with the initial house invasion being the only real tense moment.

Lupita Nyongo was amazing though, and I'll watch anything Winston Duke is in.

Us was generally creepy as strawberry float.

But the ending doesn't make sense. Is it a Government experiment that got dumped but HOW the hell do they know who they have to partner up and produce kids?

It just doesn't make sense. But the revelation was a mild surprise though.

Star Wars The Last Jedi 5/10
After the brilliant Force Awakens I was really looking forward to seeing how the continuation of the rebirth of this franchise would turn out and bar a brilliant opening and ending the rest of the film was needlessly long and rather boring for most of the film. Most of the tantalizing ideas of who Rey's parents are and Snoke's Death was a waste The Casino section was pointless and felt out of place, and there's long stretches when nothing really happens, at the end of the day it just didn't feel like a Star Wars film.

Right.

So what you call 'out of place' is actually a stinging indictment of the capitalist capacity for zealousness manifest in...

The Godfather 9/10

So good. I've only seen it once before so I didn't remember much. Pachino is great and really convincing in becoming this powerful cold bastard.

Aladdin (2019) - 7/10

Took the family to see this on the weekend and it was much better than I was expecting. Smith is surprisingly great as Genie and Mena Massoud and Naomi Scott were both far more charming leads in Aladdin and Jasmine than I had predicted based on the trailers.

They make enough changes that it doesn't feel just like a retread of the original, but it's always going to struggle to really feel distinct. They really don't do much with Apu and Iago in this version either which is a shame as they were a bit part of the charm.

There were a couple of really dodgy edit/directing choices as well - particularly some jarring use of dicking around with the framerate that just looked wrong.

Overall a much more enjoyable experience than it could have been but I still don't think these live action remakes are the best idea. There was a trailer for the Lion King before it as well which really doesn't look right. The music still sounds incredible and it will be a spectacle not doubt but I just don't think it was a good one to try and do.

Brightburn - Basically a what if Clark Kent became a murdering little gooseberry fool because he's superior to puny hoomans. Enjoyed it, nice bit of gore especially the scene when he picks his Uncles truck up into the air and drops it to the ground and the steering wheel severs his jaw from his face  and the scene with the piece of glass in the eyeball

A good 8 out of 10 murderous Alien super kids.

Toy Story 4 - 10.6/10. Perfect ending to the franchise. Very sad ending.
