I enjoyed the film but I'm always curious about where they take liberties with the truth.

From what I remember

By themselves, they aren't major, but when added together it make it feel a little too fictional for my liking, especially as the truth is still a really interesting and harrowing story.

Also, Sacha Baron Cohen's accent is appalling in it. Found it really distracting.

If you like podcasts, then The Dollop did a good three parter on Abbie Hoffman back in October. Episodes 451, 452 and 453.

Alien. I'd actually only ever watched through half of it until last night. Shockingly beautiful visually; miles ahead of star wars which came out just two years before it, both in the Giger designed alien gooseberry fool and the rough looking retro future spaceship. I guess personal preference, but Alien is much more believable and sparing in its special effects, so outside of the xenomorph looking goofy in a couple of scenes it still looks generally better than the CGI used in later Alien films (except maybe Covenant? iirc the effects in that one were good). Satire is perhaps on the nose but that's typical of sci fi and imo doesn't diminish or detract from the point its making.

uh 9/10 maybe?

The Invisible Man (2020)
A bit of a slow burn but some good ideas here once it picked up. Thought the ending was solid too. Written and directed by Leigh Whannell (Saw)

My Sweet Little Village

I guess it was okay. Bit of a crusty, old film about a bunch of crusty people in a crusty, old village. The humour probably would've landed better if you understood the language and/or the subtitles were a bit better. I dunno, it was kind of endearing but I also really don't want to watch it again.

Happy Death Day 2U

The first film was a fun slasher with a time-loop gimmick that made it unique. This one is a poor time-loop movie with a slasher gimmick.

It's still entertaining, just not anywhere as good as the original.

WaterWorld - 8/10 - even though it got slated on its release the special effects are really good all practical real props

Cocktail 9/10 great movie

The Captor - 7/10; true story of a bank robbery from 1973 in Sweden with Ethan Hawke and Mark Strong, entertaining and no fluff at 1hr and a half.

The Hunger Games - 4/10; watchable, but truly boring. Is it Battle Royale, Harry Potter or a combination of the both. I felt this was all over the place with tone, I’m hoping the rest of the series improves to see what the fuss is about.

They get worse with each film and lose the whole point of the film.

Yeah, the practical effects still look really good.

It's definitely one of those films which got terrible ratings, yet was actually nowhere near as bad as it was made out to be.

It was the victim of its own hype. WaterWorld is nowhere near awful, it's just a bit forgettable.

I've never watched WaterWorld. Is it actually pretty good then? I've never heard anything good about it.

I'm more concerned with Floydfreak giving Cocktail 9/10 and Twelve Monkeys 7/10 tbh.

It's certainly worth a look, Dennis Hopper is great as the villain too.

Only seems to be available as a rental and I'm not spending extra money on it. :dread:

Waterworld is definitely underrated. It's worth a watch for the setting which is excellently realised, the actual plot is pretty thin.
