Once Upon a Time in China 2- 7.5/10

I liked it but I remember liking the first one more when I saw it like a decade ago. Good gooseberry fool tho and it's interesting to see a Hong Kong film celebrating the establishment of the Republic of China.

Dawn of the Dead - 1978 - 4k - 10/10

For Christmas I got the new boxset of dawn of the dead. It's 4k. Has 3 cuts of the film including argento and extended cuts. All in 4k with cleaned up sound and tons of bonus stuff. £75 at Amazon and for a single movie seems a lot but it'll be worth a fortune in a couple of years when it's out of print. All dawn of the dead releases are.

Watched the theatrical cut tonight's, as alwaya it's glorious and my favourite film of all time. Goblin soundtrack, tragic deaths, satire and the horror of it all. Just a truly amazing movie.

Wish my image sig would work

Soul 8/10

Some real beauty in the second half, which I think resonated more than Inside Out and Coco for me. Pixar are treading some familiar ground now though.

We watched about 30 minutes of Soul following the positive comments on here. Very strange and not particularly interesting.

The Cottage Unrated(2008) 7.5/10

A British comedy horror film that I loved so much back when it was released. Andy Serkis’s performance really made you feel his frustrations towards his brother Peter (who is brilliantly done by Reece Shearsmith (The League of Gentlemen.)

It really switched genre perfectly from a black comedy into a full blown slasher horror in the last 25 minutes. Nothing was left unexplained. You’ll feel the pain by Reece’s character. Even Jennifer Ellison did a great job of being a tough sassy mouthed gangster’s daughter that the brothers made a huge mistake of kidnapping for cash.

There’s even a post credit cutscene that teases a sequel but it never happened.

Well recommended.

Finally! It's been so strange seeing the universal praise for Soul after thinking it was so incredibly average so i'm relieved to see someone else not be blown away by it.

Soul - 7/10

Just watched it and I enjoyed it, but nothing was amazing except how it did look.

It looks stunning on the 4k HDR though.

Drumstick hates all animated films though...even seeing a few smiley faces on this board sends him into a seething rage.

I'd say this was him, but the comparison to an animated character is going to send him nuclear.

I don't hate all animated films. There are some that are, whisper it, not bad, some even actually good but those are very few and far between.

Most people only jizz over Disney/Pixar because it's what society at large dictates. People are too afraid to rock the boat by having a different opinion and being seen as an outcast; they insist they like these films because they think they are supposed to.

Same with pop music. People like most the regurgitated rubbish in the charts because it's popular and they want to seem like they fit in. Ed Sheeran's a classic case; absolutely bog standard musician but he got popular and all the mindless drones latched onto him because it was the thing to be seen doing.

Or more likely is that people like those movies because they are good movies.

Claiming most people only like Pixar films because society tells them to is just too high on the yikes scale of hot takes.

Pixar movies are almost universally excellent (if only they'd never indulged Lasseter with the Cars franchise!) and it's bizarre to suggest that people liking them is just bowing down to some kind of societal pressure to conform!

They are fundamentally "family" films though and I do think those with less of a link to the themes of family and the particular elements of the human experience related to growing up, family connections, losing that feeling of unity with loved ones etc. will probably see the films resonate with them less. (although it feels odd saying that as the themes are pretty much universal to everyone)

I always thought they kept making Cars films because they make Disney so much money....

Oh absolutely they are a cash cow, but it was Lasseters baby to start with and I think nobody had the clout to stand up and say "Hey John, maybe this Cars thing is a bit gooseberry fool, y'know as a movie?"
