I hope you took the opportunity to sit your kids down and explain to them there are no good guys and bad guys, only flawed individuals navigating an uncaring universe onto which we project subjective moral principles.

Then again if you watched Thor: The Dark World first they are probably depressed enough

Well one of them actually said that Dark World was his favourite at one stage so I gave up trying to discuss things further with him at that point! :slol:

Soul

9/10 I loved that. Thought I'd be crying at the end as there were points throughout that made my throat sore so I'm relieved it didn't get too emotional!

Train to Busan 9.5/10
Fantastic film easily one of the best zombie films of all time, it's intense, fast paced and yet still has time to have characters you care about.

Train to Busan Presents Peninsula 6.5/10
A fun if disappointing sequel, that lacks the emotional and narrative punch of the original for over the top action that feels a bit of a mix of World War Z meets Mad Max.

I've really been getting into these foreign films just lately, I've been having my eye on The Handmaiden is that a decent film?

The Equalizer 2 - 7/10

Its better then what i thought after my first viewing it has some good set pieces but is far too predictable and cliched at times and not as memorable as the first movie, Denzil seemed too be bored during this unlike in the first

Can anyone recommend an alternative to Popcorn Time? I've uninstalled and reinstalled it and every time I try to watch something I get a message back saying "invalid media" and nothing plays for me. If someone could PM me with either another application or just a site that sails the high seas that's usable nowadays, that would be appreciated!

If any such PM's should happen to find their way into my inbox as well I would be very interested, from a research perspective. :shifty:

I Care a Lot - 4/10

Thought the first half was pretty great. The second half was an absolute steaming pile of idiotic dogshit. Just dire. Even Dinklage was completely average.

Fast and Furious 5/6/7 - :? :dread: :| :datass: :D  8-)

It’s quite amazing that for all the famous actors who have died during filming or pre-release for big budget franchises recently, it’s this big goofy action farce that addresses it the best during the actual film.

Went through the Predator films this weekend with the wife

Predator: 9/10

Obviously a classic, but actually a fair bit deeper than all the memes and gore. Its takedown of the War on Drugs and the US's continued colonialist interventions in Central America in the name of 'safety' is still relevant today.

Predator 2: 5/10

Wanted to give this the benefit of the doubt but it's utter gooseberry fool. It tries to get a wee bit political, being a reaction to the gang violence in LA around the time it was filmed, but it's so comically ham-handed it comes across like satire.

Alien Vs Predator 7/10

You know what: this was actually good. It's a Paul WS Anderson film so 'good' is relative, but it's an effective action thriller with an interesting premise and some amazing maquette work. The scenes with aliens actually fighting the Predators are strawberry floating excellent, and it somehow manages to look better than the Alien: Covenant.

Alien Vs Predator Requiem 2/10

So dark you can't see a strawberry floating thing which is just as well as everything that's happening is gooseberry fool. Zero thrills, zero excitement and it looks like gooseberry fool.

Predators 7/10

Another decent action film which attempts to hold a mirror up to the original. Everything is reversed: this time it's the humans on the Predator's turf, the lead is lithe and athletic rather than a literal bodybuilder, he even inverts Dutch's final technique for dealing with the hunters, exchanging cold for heat. Shame Lawrence Fishburne wasn't in it more though.

The Predator isn't on Disney+ but from what I remember it was shite.

Which was the one where the Predators wanted to steal the autistic kid because apparently autism is the next level of human evolution or something?

I remember that being brilliant.

AvP was the last Predator film I saw, it was decent enough but I've seen no reason to return to the franchise since!

Watched a couple more Marvel movies over the weekend as part of our big family MCU watch:

Guardian's of the Galaxy Vol. 2 - 8/10
I remember being a bit let down by this the first time, probably because the first one was so good and such a breath of fresh air so this was always in with a difficult task, but actually on a re-watch it's considerably better than I gave it credit for! Kids really loved it and went mad for baby groot so the merch pushing side of things is still working well!

Thor Ragnarok - 9/10
I've watched this about 5 times now and it remains one of my absolute favourites of the whole MCU to date, it's strawberry floating gorgeous to look at, funny as hell and features some excellent action. The character work and development here is some of the best in the series as well - despite being tied to one of the weaker series of movies overall Loki and Thor have seen some excellent arcs and it makes what comes next even more of a gut punch.

Sound of Metal 5/10

Saw people were raving about it here so gave it a go. Great acting and concept, but we guessed that he was going to end up being 'cured' and then not liking it as soon as surgery was mentioned, so it was disappointing that that was all it ended up building to.

Palm Springs - 8/10 - Funny and heartfelt and actually quite the looker, too. Both leads were great.

The Map of Tiny Perfect Things - 7 or 8/10 - Another 2021 Time-loop movie. I've probably got more tolerance for teenage drama than most, but I actually enjoyed this a lot. Both leads were (again) pretty great, without being too fake-young hella-high-school with their dialogue - and the drama was nicely understated overall, I thought. And the title (a la Fault in Our Stars) makes the conceit sound trite and twee and angst-y, but it was actually quite a sweet idea that made for some good visual shots and moments. The ending lands well, too.

Mitchells Vs Machines - 8/10 - Not every joke lands, and I thought the family 'drama' and 'dysfunction' was so mild and minor that it felt bizarre to make such a thing out of it. And there was probably at least one too many sincere heart-to-hearts and newfound understandings which kept popping the pacing, I thought. But the funny bits were so funny (the robots acting human!) and some of the late-film action was so entertaining (the maternal rage!) that overall I had a blast whilst watching.

Paprika - 8/10 - Another great Satoshi Kon film, with a real sort of cinematic 'solidity', like the visual equivalent of a Nintendo game: From the first few minutes you feel comfortable that you're in for something robust and confident and fully realised.

And the tone was surprisingly different to what I'd expected. From the cover and trailer I thought it'd be more full-on bright and wacky, but a lot of it is darkly weird, with lots of natural dialogue scenes and procedural-type stuff. Visually a feast at times, too - though I don't think it was as formally inventive as Millenium Actress, with its cinematic and historical tricksiness and which I think is full-on brilliant, probably my favourite Kon film.

Also wrt: Paprika, you can really see the influence on Inception, both in concept and in the visual homages.

If interested, here is a great video on Satoshi Kon's use of edits:
