Controlled by a crazy tyrant?

I think the actual canonical reason is that the radiation has retarded the development of a lot of the mutants under Immortan Joe’s control so they’re really strawberry floating dumb and weird.

The real reason is that it looks quite cool.

Looking cool is fine, and there is a very low bar for scrutiny on movies like this - analysing it is really not the point!

But the film also tries to take itself and its lore quite seriously at times so things like this just stick out.

It's a minor quibble, and like I said earlier I now accept and appreciate that Fury Road is a great action movie! Watching it for the first time on a plane was probably not a helpful way of forming a critical opinion!

I always thought it was a bit overrated personally.

I bet it will date terribly.

Stan and Ollie 7.8/10

Really enjoyed this. The performances by Reilly and Coogan are absolutely spot on and the story, whilst light, is very heartwarming. It’s just a lovely uplifting film that swept me away from the drudgery of the everyday bullshit.

Stan and Ollie - 8/10

Lovely stuff, I even cried. Amazing performances all round and really great job on the make up. It builds to a very strong ending.

Wish my image sig would work

Raiders of the Lost Ark - 10/10 - Watched this in honour of its victory in the recent Eliminator thread. It's just an absolutely fantastic movie and it's easy to forget just how effective a director Spielberg can be - the opening sequence where they hold off on revealing Indy, only showing him from behind before finally revealing him in a beautifully framed close up is just brilliantly handled.

I still maintain that the pacing and structure of the movie is just sublime as well - the opening in Peru with the golden idol and subsequent escape from the Hovito sets the scene brilliantly and tells you everything you need to know about Jones (and Bellog for that matter). Then we get some well crafted exposition and macguffin setup with the Army enlisting Indy to track down the Ark before the Nazis do, before the film goes on to lead the viewer through such a fantastic sequence of locations and events (mixing both action and character work brilliantly) - Nepal, the bar scene introducing Marion, her great chemistry with Indy, the interrogation by the Nazi commander and ensuing fight sequence; Cairo, establishing the connection between Indy and Sallah, discovery of the true location of the well of souls ("they're digging in the wrong place!" ), the market fight, "loss" of Marion, "snakes, why did it have to be snakes?!", fighting against the bloke from Auf Wiedersehn Pet in front of the plane, the truck fight sequence, hiding on the steamer, Indy sneaking onto the U-boat as it submerges, the final confrontation and opening of the ark... it's just a brilliant movie!

All that, and that Map Room music, too. Utterly sublime.

Spiderman into the Spiderverse- 7/10- I enjoyed this but didn't think it was a particular masterpiece. I enjoyed the opening where they made fun of all the other Spiderman Films though.

That certainly never happens in the real world in poor countries run by dictators ;)

Hmm, not quite convinced by the analogy. The difference is that in the poor real world countries the dictators are happy to be extravagant because in comparison to their subjects they are wealthy, but here we are supposed to believe that nobody, including Joe, has much in the way of fuel so there's no logic in him pissing it away.

Bird Box, I think this movie is way better than A Quiet Place. Sandra Bullock did a magnificent job portraying the character of Malorie. I really hope that there will be a sequel since I am so curious about why do the characters of the film committed a suicide. What did they really see? There are just a lot of questions in my head since I've watched it.

Joe is also a strawberry floating moron.

Actually I think the whole point of the series is that everyone is stupid except Mel Gibson and/or Tom Hardy.

FWIW I think that Fury Road is a good but not amazing movie, which is really well shot and is a hell of a spectacle. I’d probably go as far as to give it 8/10.

Immortan Joe is wealthy, he controls access to water and uses it to trade for ammunition from the Bullet Farm and for fuel from Gas Town - Furiosa making a trip to Gas Town is the setup for the film. We see very little of Gas Town in the film but we are told enough to assume that this provides a sufficient supply of fuel as required to support everything we see happen.

Immortan Joe's main motivation is his desire for a healthy heir, so when his wives make an escape (including one who is heavily pregnant) it makes sense that he throws everything he has into the pursuit. He is not acting particularly rationally.

OR is right. Joe is very wealthy. He’s also crazy and obsessed with getting revenge.

The build up to it with the music building, the suspense as they head towards the compound is done really well.

I get the setup of the film and the intended motivation for Joe, but sending your entire army to attack/shoot/explode the rig carrying your wives (one of whom is, as noted, heavily pregnant) seems like a bit of a stupid way to secure your potential for an heir!

If Gas Town is the only source of fuel, and the rig we see them send to collect the fuel is not exactly huge, it seems reasonable to assume that Joe's Citadel does not have significant local reserves of fuel. Therefore pissing the stuff away on pyrotechnics still seems counterproductive to me.

We're supposed to believe that Joe seems himself as the best leader for the people - they come to Joe as he's supposed to offer them a better life than the alternatives, and that they stick with him from a combination of "devotion to a charismatic leader" but also a healthy dose of "we haven't got any other strawberry floating choice". Doing stupid things like wasting the precious amount of fuel you have is a surefire way to make your followers think "hold on, maybe this Joe guy is just a twat and we should overthrow him? Also why is he not letting us have any of that plentiful water he seems to have? And why does he get to shag all the best looking birds?!"

It's hugely enjoyable as a big, dumb movie and I had a blast watching through for a second time recently. The only problem comes when it wants to hint at being more than a big dumb movie!
