Separate Lies (2005 | Disney+)

I liked the premise. There is an array of splendid actors/actresses.

But... it's chock full of terribly unbelievable lines. I struggle to think that anyone would actually say some of these things; or react as they do. I kept watching just to see if things would change; and they don't. Lousy. [2]

Fake edit: I can scarcely believe that the film has a Metacritic of 71. I know that tastes vary, but... good grief.

Madame Web - 3/10; three future superheroes and an ambulance driver getting chased around by a young Tim Burton with spidey-powers. Little action, story or come to think of it anything really, shame Marvel couldn’t insert a quality clause into the Spidey-verse Movie Rights Deal.

Death on the Nile - 5/10

The first hour of this film is dull was dishwater but the second skips along quite nicely.

It's not really clear why Poirot is on the boat but it turns out there's a very good reason. Putting this reason into the first twenty minutes of the film wouldn't have damaged the film in my opinion and also would've placed suspicion onto certain characters. Instead we just get a load of characters thrown onto a boat.

This film also looks weird. There is some unforgivably bad CGI and my wife made the point that a high reliance on shot/reverse shot makes it looks like a lot of the scenes were filmed at different times - this may well have been due to Covid but it's very obvious.

All the actors are excellent and the story from Christie is obviously a classic, but I feel this has a very Death in Paradise feel to it which is probably not what they were aiming for!

The direction Wes Anderson has been heading over his last few films, I only had to look at the trailer to say 'nope it's not for me'.

Oh god most of those are in that film

I didn't know what he directed and now I realise it was the life aquatic which was so gooseberry fool I turned it off. I won't be watching any more of his stuff know I know.

That video is 5 years old, so it sounds like Anderson hasn't changed at all since then.

Isle of Dogs was shite, but FMF, was, er, fantastic. Bottle Rocket, Grand Budapest and The life Aquatic are all good movies. The French Dispatch is my favourite and I haven't watched Asteroid City because my daughter (a huge WA fan) says nothing happens. You can't win them all.

Anderson's films have certainly been a mixed bag in recent years that's for sure.

Asteroid City was nothing special, but it was better than French Dispatch.

He hasn't made a truly great film though since Grand Budapest sadly.

Fantastic Mr Fox is the only film of his I enjoyed. Found the rest far to up their own bum. I still need to watch Isle of Dogs as it looks fun/cute.

I'm an Anderson fan but I've been underwhelmed recently. Asteroid City was better than French Dispatch which is one of his worst.

It'll be a sad day when Clint departs this mortal coil.

The ravine was renamed in his honour.
