Sideways (2004) - 8.5/10

Had never seen this before but was aware of its critical acclaim, and I think it was warranted. Quite a strange vibe about it all, like it was filmed in the 70s with the soundtrack to match, but the performances were great and most importantly it really made me want a glass of wine.

It'll be a sad day when Clint departs this mortal coil.

He'll always be remembered for standing up to Buford Tannen.

Please explain, I don't get it.

Clint ain't happy, but is feeling glad, he's got sunshine in a bag, he's useless but not for long, the future is coming on.

Wicked Little Letters

9/10 - This was so funny and it was nice to be in a film where everyone is just laughing there heads off.

Basic premise is someone is trolling a whole village but they are doing it by posting letters anonymously.

Despite this being set 100 years ago it feels very relevant.

Story was a bit predictable but it's more than made up with the language and characters that was delivered so well.

To Kill A Mockingbird

Within a matter of minutes of it starting I was so excited to find that this was almost exactly as I imagined it, having just finished the book. The first 2/3rds-or-so are brilliant, although it was a shame to see a couple of choice events not make it over from the book.

For the final third:

I know I'm slating a 60-year-old film here and probably holding it to unreasonable modern standards, but my god does it creak through the court case, which is the main set piece of the entire thing! It is impossible to ignore the overacting (by basically everyone) when the overall dynamic is often so staccato. One character says their lines (taking all the time in the world while they're at it...) – pause – then another character says their lines; then the extras make a noise on cue – pause – then another character says their lines – pause – etc. Atticus Finch's monologue felt so much more powerful in the book. (Yes, I know Peck won the Oscar :slol:)

Boomers will say I've got ADHD :shifty:

I think the final scene was really ineffective, as well. Action in films, particularly fighting, has obviously come an enormous way since then, and it's impossible to ignore how badly the scene has aged. Not only that, but it spoils the twist there and then, which is bad enough but gets worse by enabling them to then butcher the conversation between Finch and the Sheriff by simply removing almost all of Finch's lines. The Boo Radley reveal then just doesn't work.

The tl;dr version is that I need to stop being ridiculous about a 60-year-old film.

Overall, I enjoyed it, but some of it is old as gooseberry fool, whereas the book hasn't aged a day.

Joining the Anderson discourse, I actually think Isle of Dogs and The French Dispatch are his best, whilst Asteroid City is the worst I've seen (I've heard nothing but bad things about Dargeeling Limited so haven't watched it).

The Day of the Jackal discourse, my girlfriend was going through our list of all the films we've watched since the start of lockdown (we have a list and then score them), I was slightly surprised I'd given DotJ an 8, I remembered I liked it but had forgotten it was that good.

American Fiction 8/10 - this was good, well made, well acted and funny in the places it should be. Not my Oscar pick for this year, but would recommend.

There's a Calvin Klein joke somewhere here. I can't make it work.

Watched Dune 2 today.

Not bad, not amazing.
I was hoping to see the Navigators but no such luck.

8/10.

I also saw Dune 2 today. £40 for two IMAX tickets :slol: good grief, although I did immensely enjoy feeling like I was in the middle of the explosions as my body vibrated along to the outrageous sound levels :datass:.

Thought it was great, but it did feel very long. I'm sure it could have moved faster in several places. I was also grateful for my book knowledge, even though they spell things out a lot more explicitly in this, I think it could still be fairly hard to follow along if you're also trying to learn and remember characters etc.

Superbob - 9/10

After following Brett Goldstein as Roy Kent for years it’s always great to see him in other things and I cannot believe this passed me by all these years.

A postman becomes Superman and a stooge for the MOD but the movie focuses on his personal life. The titular Bob is polite, socially awkward and just wants someone to share his life with. Genuinely heartwarming and very funny.
