Game Night - 7/10; went in with no expectations and was pleasantly surprised last comedy to do that was probably Let's Be Cops.

Dumbo 6/10 - entertaining but a little something missing to make it extra special. I only watched the original last year but find that to be way better. Danny Devito is MVP in this, great role.

Shazam! 7/10 - really funny and probably my joint favourite DC film [with Wonder Woman] post Nolan's Batman Trilogy. It reminded me of Tom Hanks' Big as in Boy to Man and there is a nice little reference to it in the toy store when they run over the large floor keyboard. Take hold of my staff and say the magic words, urgh that's gross

Pet Sematary 6/10 - never seen the original but found it to be standard fare, entertaining enough. John Lithgow is great, he should be in bigger profile films!

Missing Link - Excellent visuals as expected from Laika. There's a scene in the credits that shows a time-lapse of the stop motion being recorded and layers over the computer effects and that was probably my highlight, which maybe speaks for how much I cared more for the visuals than for the plot! Still had some good humour in it.

Ultraviolet on netflix. I watched the first 30min then switched off. 0/10

Guardians of the galaxy 2. Not bad, but i found the pacing poor, everytime the momentum builds it seems to lose its rhythm. The stories themes, although strong and sentimental at times, were too splintered. Lots of pretty colours shapes, an OK sound track and a few funny moments. 5/10.

Captain Marvel - 6.5/10

It's a very mid tier Marvel movie, not crap, not great. The de-aging on Samuel L Jackson was amazing, it didn't look at all weird. They should have given him a Pulp Fiction style jheri curl though.

I feel bad for watching 30 minutes of it. Is there a way to delete it from my netflix "continue watching" list?

Mary Poppins Returns: Much Better Than I was Expecting/10

Watched this with the kids the other night, I had heard that it was a sack of gooseberry fool so I was pleasantly surprised to discover that it was actually fairly decent. Blunt does a fantastic job with Poppins and Miranda is surprisingly likeable as the DVD replacement character Jack. There were some half decent songs in there as well - Can You Imagine That?, A Cover is Not the Book, and Trip a Little Light Fantastic are all catchy, well performed tunes that have excellent visual sequences to go with them.

It's not the greatest family film ever, but then neither was the original. I think 50+ years of repeats and rose-tinted specs have made people blind to the fact that the 1964 film is slow, often dull and has plenty of crap songs all of its very own!

No idea, i don't use netflix, but i suspect it will remain on your list as a means of punishment.

The worst thing about it is it takes away from the very excellent tv series that was called Ultraviolet. Channel 4 thing about vampires starring that fella from POTC and This Life. I think it might be available on All 4. Bet it's aged terribly though.

Watched a couple of Jake Gyllenhael films on Netflix recently:

Stronger - 6/10. Film about a survivor of the Boston marathon bomb. This was perfectly fine, if a little forgettable. JG and the female lead were both brilliant, but it felt like it had a lot of padding and was ultimately a little forgettable. Some scenes were nailed (PTSD at Bruins game, conversation with his cowboy hat rescuer) and I thought they did a good job of conveying his dislike of being a hero and everyone wanting something from him, but it was lacking in other areas. They didn't really explore the relationships with his family very well and it's a little suspect they left out the fact the couple divorced in 2016 at the end of the film to give it a happy ending.

Velvet Buzzsaw - 4/10. I absolutely love Nightcrawler, it's one of my favourite films and so I was excited to see this as it's the same director back with JG. It was however, extremely disappointing. Good cast, most of who play their part well but like the art world it was portraying, there was no real depth or substance to the story. It was also (ironically I guess) very unappealing to look at it visually. The cinematography was extremely bland and it looked like a cheap TV show.

Pretty sure the movie was written and even filmed before the divorce so it's a bit harsh to hold that against it!

Agree that it's a bit of a mixed bag though.

They finalised their divorce in Feb 2017 and the film was released in Sept 2017. I'm not suggesting they should have included it in the film itself (which is obviously impossible as it was filmed in 2016 mainly I believe), but the note they ended the film on was a picture of the wife running the marathon and Jeff being at the finish line, so I'm assuming they made a decision to not include the fact they had divorced in that.

The director's cut has her finishing the marathon and then going straight to her solicitor to file the divorce papers.
