Been bored in the evenings lately so watched a few films.
Ant-Man and the Wasp - not bad, better than the first film and a lot of good casting, especially Walter Goggins being slimy as usual and the girl playing Ghost. Would've liked to see more Lawrence Fishburne though. 3.5/5
Solo -
Seemed obvious this had some development trouble. Didn't the original directors get chucked off it and replaced with Ron Howard or something? It really showed and felt like a film of two half. First half was boring as strawberry float and it genuinely looked pretty bad in places. The rest was so-so. Didn't like the casting of that guy as Solo, he had zero chemistry with everyone apart from Chewbacca. Donald Glover as Lando was good but what the strawberry float was with that droid of his?
Didn't really see the point in this film at all 2.5/5.
Rogue One - This is how Star Wars spin-offs should be. Much more interested in a bunch of new characters rather than a badly-casted old one. Still think this is one of the best films in the entire series and the entire third act is amazing. Loved the supporting cast. 4.5/5
The Last Jedi - Still think it's a toss up between this and Empire for the best Star Wars film, and it did exactly what the series needed. The hyperspace set piece remains one of the biggest "holy gooseberry fool" moments I've seen. Love crabbit Luke so much
Love how much the film pissed off the fanboys too

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 - Really liked it but it would have been so much better if it was just all Yondu since he was the best thing about it and his character arc was great. Putting my comic book geek hat on, I'm still not a big fan of the movie version of Star-Lord and how they just completely changed his personality in the comics to mimic this version, and having Kurt Russell being a Celestial rather than just an uber-powerful cosmic entity was unnecessary. The bittersweet ending was GREAT. Hope Sylvester Stallone's crew has a big part in the third film. 4/5.

Agree with most of this except I don't really care either way about the comic book version of Star-Lord because I never read GOTG
Hannah John-Kamen(and Morpheus
) needed a bit more to do in Ant-Man and the Wasp. I thought she was brilliant and her phase abilities could've been a really interesting counterpoint to the growing and shrinking.

I don't know much about the comics or how much overlap there is in the MCU but isn't
The Phoenix in X-men also a celestial?

Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile
Zac Efron delivers a rather frightening depiction of Ted Bundy in a movie that focuses on the latter part of Bundy's crimes, particularly in regards to his two escapes from custody and the trial that follows. However, the film does tend to jump annoyingly about a bit for the first 40 minutes or so before it settles. Worth a watch for Zac's performance alone, oh and a short but surprisingly convincing performance from Metallica front man James Hetfield as Officer Bob Hayward.

The title of that Bundy film always makes me think of Limmy's "surprisingly down to earth, and very funny" thing whenever I see it.
In the Mood for Love (2000) - ****Mulholland Drive (2001) - *****What the hell was that?! I loved it. I've never seen a filmmaker who is able to capture dream logic quite like Lynch and the unsettling ambience that teeters on the edge of outright horror without completely slipping over here is second to none. Badalamenti's score is brilliant too, as expected. A film I'll look forward to revisiting many times over.
The Godfather (1972) - ****
The Godfather Part II (1974) - ****
The Godfather Part III (1990) - **I really enjoyed the first two but there's definitely a dip in quality for the finale, although I don't think it's quite as awful as I've seen it made out to be. In a similar vein, while they're clearly expertly made and I liked them, I didn't fall in love with the first two films to the extent you might be expected to based on their legacy. I was enthralled by the original up until
Sollozzo gets taken care of and Michael goes into hiding but then I lost interest for certain periods until the final 20 minutes or so where it really picks up again. The sequel maintains about the same level of quality as the first but I think I preferred the original overall.
Blade Runner (1982) - *****
Dangerous Days: Making Blade Runner (2007) - *****
Blade Runner 2049 (2017) - *****Two of my favourite films of all time. On the whole, I think I do still prefer the original to 2049 but it was my first rewatch of the latter since seeing it at the cinema and it really is one of the best modern sci-fi films, as well as sequels in general. The making of the first film is a great watch for anyone who might be interested too, it's long at 210+ minutes but it comprehensively covers pretty much every part of the production. I had completely forgotten from when I first saw it that the opening scene of 2049 was how the original was initially going to begin.

The Force Awakens - 5/10.
My first time rewatching the film in some time and... It's fine. Visually strong, with some good performances and a few neat character asides, but overall it feels kind of airless? Possibly that's because it is so indebted to the original trilogy, and so keen to please by constantly referencing it?
Pacing and dialogue also felt a bit off (actually, just execution overall).
I mean, like I say, it's fine. I had fun watching it again. But I think it's my least favourite of all the new Star Wars films.

Not quite. It's a manifestation of "the universal force of life and passion." The Celestials are something else entirely.

Alien - 10/10First time re-watching this in ages and I forgot just how good it is.
I watched it with my 12 year old daughter and she loved it. I was worried she was going to spend the whole film worrying about the cat, but she got right into it and was asking questions about "the company" and that afterwards.
I'll look forward to the pre-teen emotions going haywire when we get to Alien 3...although it might be one to leave for a bit longer, thinking about it.

I think they played it safe mainly to please the fanboys following the negative reception of the prequels (which while clunky, did try something different).
The response to The Last Jedi shows how difficult they are to satisfy.

Snowpiercer - 8/10
This popped up on Netflix, heard good about it, decided to watch it. I liked it a lot, had some issues with it, but the imagery of it is astounding, and the desperation of the situation is brought across in the movie very well. There are some true WTF scenes in it. And there's a fantastic scene at the end of the movie that I don't want to spoil, that hit me like a ton of bricks.
John Hurt is also fantastic in this.

Yeah I think I agree with you. First new Star Wars film after a decade's worth of the prequels being slowly digested in the belly of the mighty Sarlacc*, the studio must have been apprehensive.
*sorry I meant "being constantly re-evaluated and mocked by 30/40 somethings claiming the prequels killed their childhoods", though I imagine the two are ultimately similar.Also you reminded me of the reaction to TLJ. Ugh. FANS.
