Saw Detective Pikachu on Friday. Thought it was fantastic. I've never played a proper Pokémon game, nor watched the cartoon apart from on occasion with my son but I've known a fair bit about it over the years. So even to a casual fan this was a good film. You could really sense Reynolds touch on the film as well, like a Deadpool for kids. Good stuff. 7 jigglypuffs out of 10.

Two of my favourite films of all time. On the whole, I think I do still prefer the original to 2049 but it was my first rewatch of the latter since seeing it at the cinema and it really is one of the best modern sci-fi films, as well as sequels in general. The making of the first film is a great watch for anyone who might be interested too, it's long at 210+ minutes but it comprehensively covers pretty much every part of the production. I had completely forgotten from when I first saw it that the opening scene of 2049 was how the original was initially going to begin.
Blade Runner 2049 is possibly the only time Hollywood has brought back one of my favourite movie franchises and not completely strawberry floated it up (see Star Wars, Terminator, RoboCop, Godfather etc).
Agree about the amazing opening scene, especially how what appears to be fields of crops from a distance turns out to be plastic grub farms as the perspective draws nearer.
Dennis Veulneuve did an incredible job, it's resulted in his Dune remake now being my most hyped movie.

I really like both Arrival and Blade Runner 2049, and I’m sure Dune will be fantastic. Id love to see him do a smaller more intimate Sci-Fi film though, something like The Man From Earth or Sunshine even where the interactions between characters are given more attention than a complex operatic Sci-Fi narrative.
Either that or Hyperion.

It's filmed in London and has a lot of the buildings on show. The CNM HQ is the Cheese Greater, the Gherkin and Lloyds of London are constantly in the background, with it being filmed on Leadenhall Street. There was also a LLoyds Bank (and Farmers Cafe) on show at one point which they didn't dress up/CGI over.
Detective Pikachu 7-8/10, Thin plot, but has a massive nostalgia bonus. Shame it didn't answer the age old question of whether people eat Pokemon.

Spent the week returning to some favourites I hadn't seen in a while, with the exception of the latter two Alien films being my first viewings and them kinda sorta being a bit crap.

On this point, the way they mixed London, Tokyo, New York and San Fransisco together was really clever.

Yea they had London buses in it too and TFL travel signs hehe

Saw the London Bus at least, didn't realise it was filmed in London though!
Also people definitely eat pokemon. Slowpoke tails are a delicacy!

You can at least take comfort in the fact that i too rate Mad Max: Fury Road, Terminator, Alien, and Lost in Translation all very highly.
500 Days of Summer is pretty decent too.

I'm all for a good monster movie, but The Meg doesn't qualify. Absolutely terrible.

Widows - Rented from Amazon Prime as it's reduced to £1.99 and I'd heard a lot of positive things about it. Still, ended up enjoying it more than I'd expected though. Some really strong characters in it that you relate to and sympathise with. Good performances and some interesting plot developments. 8/10
