I just got back from seeing this and it's really odd to score. It looks amazing and the ships really do look realistic and believable but the film just has a paper thin story that feels like it would be a side quest if it was in an RPG rather than a main event story.
It felt like most of the film was watching this guy take psychological evaluations every 15 minutes and taking that heart rate monitor off his neck. It's maybe worth going to see for the outstanding special effects but if this was a novel it'd be about 50 pages long and even then contain some filler.

Ad Astra, more like add some story .

It looked nice but I've seen Zero G look a lot more convincing and Sunshine did spacescapes better.

John Wick 3 - Dogs/10

Between Two Ferns: The Movie

I have no strawberry floating idea why I put this on and no idea why I watched the whole thing. It’s by far the worst thing I’ve seen recently. I’m going to break my scores down into different parts of the whole thing.

The movie parts: 2/10

The celebrity interview parts: 5/10

The Will Ferrell parts: 0/10

The outtakes: 7/10

Overall: 3/10

Between Two Ferns - 4/10

Interviews and outtakes are amazing. The rest is padding to make it into a film. Still worth a watch for the interviews and reactions.

Lego Batman - 10/10

Perfect Batman film

Troll Hunter - 9/10

Seen it loads of times but still expertly made and paced.

First Blood remains the best, but yeah I did enjoy Rambo. Far more than the other sequels. I wonder how Last Blood will pan out?

It - Chapter One - 7/10

Good movie, some unintentionally funny bits. It has a nice sense of creeping dread, the jump scares kinda ruin that. Glad it didn't stick to the book closely in some aspects (the kid orgy scene, what the strawberry float was he thinking?)

American Made - 7/10

I enjoyed this. It seems a lot of the film is based on taking Billy Seal's (unproven) word and while a lot of it is probably bollocks or at least exaggerated, it makes for an entertaining film. It's style and energy work really well although Seal doesn't really have any depth as a character and certainly no morals-although maybe that's the point. It also kind of underplays a lot of the supporting cast which is a shame and they seem to have deleted a scene or two because there's absolutely no reaction or fallout from his wife to her brother getting killed. He dies....and the film just carries on. It feels like it's missing at least one scene.

Would also recommend to anyone who enjoyed Narcos as it involves Escobar and the Medillion cartel too-in fact I'm fairly sure Billy Seal pops up in one scene of Narcos from memory.

The King of Comedy - 7/10

This is nowhere near the heights of other De Niro and Scorsese movies, but it’s solid enough and is very prescient. Decent/good rather than great.

Arrival 9/10

It lost a little of its impact the second time round as knowing the twist really reshapes the entire endeavour, but it's still a fantastically thought provoking film that moves very much at its own pace without ever feeling slow. It also does spaces very well. The tunnels of the makeshift base or the bluelit glow of the transport helicopter feel like very real places as opposed to sets.

Superceded by Villeneuve's next film, but still excellent.

As Above, So Below - 5/10

I should have known this would be gooseberry fool when early on they translated some ancient text to English.... And it ryhmed.... In English.

Terrible cgi and some good bits of tension. A weak ending and nothing really of note. It's just a film that happens.

Snatch - / 10

Couldn't sleep last night so I was browsing Netflix and spotted this was on there and thought it might be a mindless way to either entertain myself if I stayed awake or possibly even to put me to sleep. But strawberry float me is this far shitter than I remembered!

The opening is basically impossible to watch - between the terrible direction (with shot composition and transitions all over the place), the horrendous editing (seriously who the hell thought spinning the shots around whilst ridiculous sound effects are layered on top was a good idea? all the characters names appearing in freeze frame etc. just no!), and the utterly, utterly awful cringeworth dialogue (I was going to pick some examples here but there just isn't a single line that doesn't deserve to be mocked!) I just couldn't bear it for more than 10 minutes.

I'm sure I at least found it watchable when I saw it back in the day, but this was just some grade A bullshit, how Guy Ritchie managed to get away with it is one of life's great mysteries!

Snatch is definitely a product of its time. I still think it's watchable, but yeah like a lot of turn-of-the-millennium films it hasn't aged well.

I like a good Snatch.

Guy Ritchie has never made a film that is above average. At least Paul W S Anderson has Event Horizon.
