they did a similar thing with the ITV4 bond showings a few months ago, skipping you only live twice and skipping ahead to live and let die. before going back to you only live twice

Weird, especially as Goldfinger is arguably the best of the Connery Bond flicks (though not my favourite).

Pain and Glory 8/10 - The Truth I watched a few days ago has similar themes about age, relationships, and film, but Pain and Glory executes it all so much better. Made me not look forward to old age.

Finally got round to watching Hamilton today.

It's so good, though. The soundtrack's fallen out of my rotation recently so it's fantastic to see the whole show again without having to A) Go to London and B) Shell out like 70 odd quid for a ticket. Glad it's got subtitles too because bits of it are really hard to hear live

Having some of the actors playing different characters in the second half is a good idea, too, but young Philip still seems so weird:

Time Trap 1.5/5 - group gets stuck in a cave that contains a time bubble where years pass in seconds. Cool idea that would have been done better with a bigger budget. Textbook Horror Channel stuff.

Underwater 3.9999999/5 - This was a lot better than I expected. Disaster movie where an underwater drilling station at the bottom of the Mariana Trench gets strawberry floated up by an earthquake and they have to find a way to another nearby station to escape. Turns out the drilling released something that ends up being killer creature things and actual Cthulu. Kirsten Stewart was really good as the lead. TJ Miller sticks out like a sore thumb in this though, he's doing his usual schtick and it feels so out of place it's ridiculous

The Interview -8/10 Australian thriller set in a police interview room. Thought it could have ended slightly better but still very good.

The Grand Budapest Hotel 7/10- Not quite what I was expecting. Classic Wes Anderson

Local Hero 6/10- Scored 710 on our living room film chart as it's my girlfriend's favourite film. Seeing a young Peter Capaldi was a bit weird. Harmless enough has charm in places but I didn't find it particularly interesting,

Juha 4/10 - Definitely Kaurismaki's weakest film. A silent movie which outstays its welcome.

Alita Battle Angel - ?

What even was this, it's such a weird introduction to a new world and the story was so inconsequential. I don't know what anyone would see in this to attach 100m+ budget to it.

Gumnaam 7/10 - A murder mystery musical. Great fun, though each scene overstays their welcome. Just by a minute or so each, but it adds up. Still, what a wild ride.

Isle of Dogs was fun, but i preferred Budapest, and for me, Anderson's best animated work is Fantastic Mr Fox.

I watched life aquatic and the royal tenanbauns this weekend, and would say I prefer grand Budapest and Isle of dogs. They both have some brilliant moments, but do have a couple of dips. I can't remember Mr Fox so need to see it again, and get around to his rest too.

His earlier stuff is amongst the best but he’s not an auteur who has diminished with every release. Consistently brilliant. Maybe except The Darjeeling Limited. Or The Life Aquatic.

Never Rarely Sometimes Always - 7/10
An intimate portrayal of two teenage girls in rural Pennsylvania. Faced with an unintended pregnancy and a lack of local support, Autumn and her cousin Skylar embark on a brave, fraught journey across state lines to New York City.

The highest rated movie of the year according to Metacritic, and the trailer had me welling up. The movie was a tough watch. Sad and distressing. Maybe more so since I have teenage daughters.

Star Wars - The Empire Strikes Back (at the cinema)

10/10

A little cinema in Bowness was showing Empire Strikes Back today. Only about 8 of us in. Lots of social distancing and a very quiet audience.

First time since lockdown for the cinema and it was wonderful. A beautiful film whcih looks amazing and is just so memorable, almost every scene is burned into my memory. Its a flawless film and a pleasure from start to finish.

Standout moments are Han going out to rescue Luke, the battle of Hoth, Vader going through multiple staff, Yoda being old and cranky, the battle with Vader and the big reveal. That reveal still sends chills down the spine, a moment of pure cinema.

Social distancing in the cinema makes the cinema experience a lot more enjoyable for me.

I really didn't get it either. Crap story and a load of boring CG nonsense.

8 1/2 10/10 - One of my favourite movies of all time. Feel like every scene has bled into contemporary cinema over time, from Lynch to Tarantino.

I think they saw James Cameron and assumed it would make bank.
