The version called Aliens.

Do I need to watch the first one, to understand Aliens? Will I lose anything from the first i.e. plot spoilers if I watch the 2nd one first or are they stand alone?

Watch them in order, and ignore Preezy, Alien is superb.

Alien is a classic! Aliens is a better action film but not necessarily the better film!

To answer the question more directly, Aliens follows on directly from Alien and references it often so you will lose a lot by not watching them in the correct order.

Where did I say Alien wasn't superb?

North by Northwest: 8/10 Good story perhaps slightly spoiled by the pop culture references made about it over the last 60 years, i.e. the Plane in the Cornfields, the finale at Mt Rushmore.

Felt it would have been better, had the reveal that Cornhill definitely wasn't Kaplan had been made later, as the ambiguity over whether he was or not and the intrigue of what was going on made the 1st half better than the 2nd.

Edit: Plan to watch Alien (for the first time), next weekend. Which version should I watch?

Out of interest is goosebumps 2 worse than the first one assuming you have seen it? My son wants to go to the cinema to see it. I’ve only just watched the first one today and thought it was alright.

Yes. I think I gave the first one 6/10. I think your son will enjoy the 2nd one (assuming he's not older than 12ish), but I imagine you'll be bored in bits of it.

He’s 9 and liked the first and has read a number of the books. I shall buy lots of popcorn then :D

Alien is superb. That's obvious.

Aliens happens to be in my all-time top 3 films, however, so I will always recommend it over anything else.

Ah, I see. I would argue that Aliens would be a better film having seen Alien though, wouldn't you agree?

I actually don't think you need to see Alien before watching Aliens. Everything you need to know about the first film is explained in the opening 20 mins of Aliens, it sets the scene perfectly.

That's not to say that Alien can be discarded or is less of a film etc etc, but is there anything that wouldn't make sense if you hadn't seen the first film? I can't think of anything - could be wrong though, happy to be corrected!

I also think, and this may or may not be a controversial opinion, but I don't actually think Ripley's story in Alien is as strong as in Aliens. There's far less of a character arc for her in the original. She starts the film in a position of authority and that never really changes, she ends the film pretty much the same as how she started it, albeit with less clothes and maybe some emotional scarring :slol:

In Aliens (spoilered for Ecno, in case he/she's reading) she starts off as this PTSD shadow that is haunted by the loss of her daughter and of the events in Alien, and then grows to face her demons and ultimately conquer them, she definitely grows as a character in the second film far more than in the first.

That's part of the reason I love Alien3 so much - she managed to defeat the Queen and escape and be relatively safe with a new surrogate daughter and Hicks to get involved with and then BAM they're both snatched from her, so brutal and unforgiving, just like the Xenomorph itself. It takes everything from her.

I could talk about these films all day :datass:

You don’t have to see Alien before Aliens, but there is no reason not to watch Alien first. Both are amazing films, I am jealous of anybody watching them for the first time.

One thing to ensure, when you do get round to watching Aliens make sure it's the special edition.

Whatever you do, stop watching Alien films after 3.

I have a soft spot for Prometheus but enter at your own risk.

I was listening to something and they say during the credits of Aliens you hear the face hugger egg hatching.

I really like Alien 3 but it's definitely a bit of a mess and nowhere near as good as the other two. Resurrection is appalling as is Prometheus. Haven't seen the new one.

3 is obviously nowhere near as good as the first two, but I think it’s harshly treated. It’s a decent movie, it just looks gooseberry fool compared to what came before it. The later films make 3 look like a masterpiece though.
