I haven't fully enjoyed a Tarantino film since Kill Bill Volume 2. He still has his moments, but I have no desire to ever rewatch a single film of his from the 2000's onwards. I still go back to Jackie Brown, I grow fonder of it with each viewing.

Death Proof was a bona fide grade A stinker of epic proportions, it has a high ranking on my all time most hated movies list.

Jackie Brown is probably still my favourite. The absence of the nastiness that's become his trademark means he's able to create some genuinely great character interactions.

Also, he didn't write it. So that's a plus.

Only film of his that shows any maturity. I like to believe it was because he was too chickenshit to try and tell Pam Grier what to do. And I don't blame him.

If we're ranking Tarantino...

Pulp Fiction > Reservoir Dogs > Django Unchained > Inglorious Basterds > The Hateful Eight > Jackie Brown

To me the rest aren't worth mentioning.

This sounds like a list I'd be interested in.

Funnily enough I'm watching Kill Bill Vol. 2 right now. It's very good, but Vol. 1 is a stronger film for me.

It sits proudly amongst fellow stinkers such as Rubber, The Innkeepers, VHS, Batman & Robin, and Ultraviolet.

Vol 2 wasn't a disaster by any means, but i did find it very uneven. Some characters had no reason to exist (such as that old mexican guy who waffles on for ages about very little of substance), while others were far too fleeting (Elle Driver deserved better), and the whole thing just seems to have been cobbled together at very short notice.

Kill Bill 1 and 2 were one movie that got chopped in half when edited.

They do feel very different though, it would be interesting to see the full length version to see if it feels less like two separate movies.

I've found that I really enjoy Tarantino films on their first watch but they fall off a bit on a second viewing.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters

In the interests of balance I should point out that my son enjoyed this, but I thought it was a huge disappointment after the very promising trailer. The script is abysmal, with dialogue so predictable that half the time you can say the next line before the actor has delivered it. The human cast has grown too unwieldy which means they all feel underused, even though every scene with them leaves you twiddling your thumbs waiting for the monsters to show up again. There's an early development involving one main character that doesn't really make sense, the geography of the film is all over the place, and while the monster battles have their moments – including a few strikingly beautiful shots – that's not enough to compensate. It's dumb, but not in a fun way. Better than Hellboy, but that's not saying much. **

Aladdin.

Yea, t'was fun enough. Nowhere near the train wreck it could have been.

Good things;

The increased Bollywood flavour was really fun.
Will Smith was a little flat maybe, but his Fresh Prince of Agrabah routine is actually one of the better bits of the film, and much better than the dreaded Robin Williams karaoke we could have had.
The musical numbers mostly hit the spot in the nostalgia stakes, 'Prince Ali' being a high point.
Generally, it skipped along at a merry pace and I wasn't really bored.
The updating of the politics is pretty well handled, if a little predictably blunt.

Bad things;

Holy gooseberry fool the whole human cast are devoid of charm.
Jasmine's 'Speechless' song is... fine? But it's so out of place amongst the rest of the songs. All the other songs, like every other Disney song of that time, is meant to be an exercise in exposition. 'Never had a Friend Like Me', 'A Whole New World', 'One Jump Ahead' - All literally there to forward the plot without needing thirty minutes to establish the character motives. And then this Kelly Clarkson music video gets inserted into the plot, twice, to reinforce that Jasmine is a strong female character. We already knew that because she kept doing interesting things in the narrative, we didn't need this pace-breaking song where she has an aside to herself to reinforce everything we already knew about her character. Twice.
Wow, it's amazing how much of the fun is lost when Abu and Iago get replaced by pretty much just normal animals. They were the best bits in the original!
Jafar is especially wet.

They won't stop making soulless live-action remakes if people keep going to see their soulless live-action remakes :( is Speechless one of the Pasek and Paul tunes?

EDIT: Looks like it is. Probably explains why it feels so out of place. They aren't really ones for exposition-y songs... It's what stuck out about the Greatest Showman, too - Most of the songs are really good, but they don't really move anything along (with the exception of maybe the one in the bar)

Yea but now she can't complain when we go see Godzilla which only has like 4 musical numbers in it.

Godzilla King of the Monsters - 2D - 100000/10

A hard film to review as if you're a super fan then it's gold. If you're not then it's an enjoyable summer movie.

It fixes what 2014 film had wrong with a lot more monster action. It builds an interesting world, which is trying to be big like the marvel cinematic universe but hasn't had the set up. It does deal with some interesting themes and motivations but it's really all about the monsters.

Each intro is amazing and I really enjoyed the battles. The best thing about the film is the references and respect to the series. Without spoilers ..... The music, is uses the Godzilla theme and Mothra theme. It references a very important Mothra bit of lore. It has a human super weapon, some of the battles reference past battles and it really just loved monsters and the world they have created.

The new Monsters don't get a lot of screen time but their designs are interesting if lacking in colour.

It does take about 20 minutes to get going, it has one very odd character motivation which makes no sense, it still does that thing of cutting back to humans during monster fights. Only really Pacific Rim fixed this, other giant monster movies keep cutting back and it's really annoying.

It bounces along and it feels really well made.

Some people have said the director (Trick R Treat and Krampus) is going to go onto massive things and this is a Peter Jackson, Sam rami moment of blockbuster breakout. That's probably true, I just hope marvel grab him before DC do. As I'd love to see what he could do with the X-Men.

Overall it's very much a fan film, those who love the big guy will love this. Those who don't will probably find it silly summer fun.

Highlights...

Mothra being amazing and a truly kick ass monster
Godzilla multiple arrivals
Ghidorah , has a couple of stunning bits
The reveal of one character.... Didn't see that coming.
Final battle
Godzilla theme
Mothra theme
Rodan arrival
References to Skull Island
The brutality of the fights, so good.
Post credit scene
The twists
Godzilla intimidating scene

...

Seeing it again today but this time in IMAX 2D.

Wish my image sig would work
