GOTG2 is good, the original is probably the better film but there’s nothing wrong with the second one at all and I think the supporting cast(Sean Gunn, Michael Rooker) are given more of a chance to show what they can do, and performed very well.

Godzilla wrote:Hobbs and Shaw - 5/10

Full film is in the trailer.

It's banter, action, banter, action. Banter is written by a computer who has downloaded every odd couple buddy cop film ever. Action is threat free and heavy on the slow oo.

It's alright but it's made for people who thought the fast and the furious was a bit of a thinking man's film. This is not a thinking man's film. It's a film about 2 men who play exaggerated versions of themselves in a world where everything can be solved by punching.

Sounds like an 80s movie. I’m in.

That was an inferior sequel. The script wasn't as snappy, the pacing was bad, it was a bit contrived in some respects.

That's what I thought! Pretty much everyone sees it as a superior film but I just don't get it. The themes are stronger, the parent and child relationship thing residually, but they're handled so cackhandedly and the formula is such a copy of the first film I quickly got bored.

I liked GotG2 but I don’t know anybody that thinks it’s a superior movie to the first.

Exactly this. The general consensus is less than favourable for the sequel. And don’t tell me the ending didn’t get you in the feels. Great film but just not as good as the first.

It is a bit of an 80s film but without the memorable lines or ultra violence seen in Arnie movies. Also the scenes of action don't really have anythng happen in them. The two heroes can survive anything and the leading lady would be at the very least unable to walk following a few of the falls she takes.

It's just a bit odd and fluffy with a bit of swearing to show they are men and it's not a kids film. Actually it's like the first Gi Joe film but a poor version of it. (Right down to the grey and dull super hero/super bad guy suit). Even has the transforming motor bike from the second Go Joe film.

Wish my image sig would work

Spiderman Homecoming

Just watching through movies on Netflix that I meant to get around to, but didn't for whatever reason. It was alright but not exceptional. Peter Parker is likable. I haven't seen any of the other ones after Tobey Maguire's run.

The Force Awakens - 8/10
My project to get the kids to see all of the Star Wars films has now reached the modern era, and the most recent film that I have actually seen myself!

There is lots that I don't like about this film - the hitting of the galactic reset button so that we're basically back exactly where we were ~30 years ago and the Rebel victory in the original trilogy was essentially worth nothing, how terrible Adam Driver is, how crushingly obvious they are with the whole "hey it's just like old Star Wars! Hey, you - remember what old Star Wars was like? This is it again, look at these people and creatures, remind you of anything? IT'S OLD STAR WARS!!!", Solo's bullshit about "the force, the Jedi - it's all real" ... well of course it's all real, less than a generation ago there were hundreds of Jedi all over the place, the rebels and empire were both being powered by prominent and public users of the force, this stuff will be a matter of record, video footage, books etc. it's not some secret from the dark ages that we don't know if it's real or not!

Then there are lots of smaller things too like how utterly bland and awful Adam Driver is, the "lets hyperdrive from inside a ship for no reason!" moment :fp:, the horrible design of Kylo Ren's helmet that makes him look like he's got a ladies 1930s bob hair cut, the fact that Han Solo has basically been wearing the same set of clothes FOR HIS ENTIRE ADULT LIFE! etc. etc.

However, there is no denying that it is shot far better than anything Lucas did, the pacing is pretty tight, there are some genuinely likeable characters and performances from Finn, Rey and Poe, Harrison Ford knocks it out of the park as always with his Solo return, the dialogue is infinitely better than most of the tripe Lucas ever managed, it looks great, and whilst it is shallow and derivative in many ways it is undoubtedly a bloody fun ride.

Oh and did I mention that Adam Driver is awful? Because he is absolutely the worst thing about it. :dread:

I've still got TLJ to look forward to so I'm attempting to remain open minded despite the levels of criticism out there (from Russian bots of something apparently...)

I just think Driver is entirely unsuited to the role. He looks and acts like the moody teenager from a show like Dawson's Creek or Neighbours or something. There's no menace or threat to the performance.

Didn't Solo not believe in the Force or Jedi in the Episode IV? I guess the issue is there and the prequals.

Same with people in the empire, like on the (whatever) ship they were on until Vader force chokes some strawberry floater.

Like I say, he has zero presence. He's not threatening or menacing or imposing in any tangible way.

Yet if that is in some way supposed to be the point then he also doesn't have any other facets to him that might take advantage of that from a character building perspective. He doesn't seem genuinely conflicted in any way, there is no suggestion that he really was/is feeling a pull to the light side - the performance and delivery don't sell anything along those lines.

He's just ... there. Being a bit moody and annoying, and generally acting like a underdeveloped "bad boy" character from a teen drama show.

Also I don't like his hair. ;)

So first off, this isn't meant as a repudiation of your thoughts. It's as valid a point of view as my own. I do find it really interesting that I find the complete opposite to be true.

Ren is a child. He's the victim of abusive masters, be it his real father who shipped him off to Jedi school, his failed teacher Luke or the corrupt manipulator Snoke. He's a lot in common with the villains from Akira and Chronicle in that he's the product of a damaged mind given extreme power.

Driver manages to portray this through his stance alone, even before he's said a word. He's cocky and arrogant but scratch a tiny bit below and there's nothing but a mass of identity crises and self loathing. Again, through dialogue and sheer presence Driver makes the character. I simply can't see how anyone can watch the interrogation scene with Rey and not come away impressed: it's a fight that takes place entirely on the two actors' faces.

The confrontation with his father is also played masterfully. At this point we know he's not struggling against the darkness but against the light and that he's finally giving himself fully over to Snoke's teachings. Again, this entirely done through Driver's performance of a scared child doing something he doesn't want to in order to silence his inner conflict.

It's genuinely fascinating to me that someone could watch his performance and interpret it is such a different way.

Haven't read what you put there Taf as I've not watched TLJ yet and wasn't sure if you are basing your interpretation and those comments on just TFA or including TLJ in there?

I'm trying to remain spoiler free and untainted on TLJ for when I eventually get round to bloody watching it!

There's a tiny bit of TLJ stuff in the 2nd para but the rest is TFA only!
