If I can tear myself away from playing Bloodborne I may get round to watching TLJ tonight...

I've been enjoying Bloodborne, but that's probably just because I'm "cheating" apparently.

Slept on it and feel that this is probably one of the most effective science fiction films I've seen in a very long time. Been thinking about it all morning, just superb.

I really liked Annihilation because I'm aware of Suspension of Disbelief

It's been ages since I watched it but the themes at play and the astonishing look of the thing was what I remember liking. It may well not make much sense, logically.

Weirdly, I was pretty disappointed by Annihilation, while also still thinking it was a good film. For me it came down to the positive buzz it was receiving, there was a general air of it being worthy of the proper heavy hitters of sci-fi. So I went into it with that frame of mind, expecting something that could hang with the likes of Tarkovsky...

...it ain't fit to the lace the shoes of Stalker.

It's a good flick that's definitely better than the big blustery nonsense sci-fi that hits the screens nowadays (though I will always have a soft spot for unmitigated bollocks like Jupiter Ascending and Alita Battle Angel), but like hell is it a great of the genre. It's not even as good as Ex Machina.

Ex Machina is undoubtedly a better film, but I liked Annihilation's gumption. I'm not surprised it didn't end up in cinemas over here, it's just so unlike anything I've seen in a long time.

I'll agree with that. Looking forward to seeing what Garland does next.

There's suspension of disbelief and then there is the premise of the plot making absolutely no sense. I'm not pointing out all the small details like inconsistent hazmat use or whatever, I'm talking about the whole set up being unbelievable. It threw me off immediately.

I like a lot of what the film was going for, but the concepts have been explored better in much more immersive and self-consistent stories.

You don't have to look far on Netflix to see something similar being handled a lot better with the Upside Down in Stranger Things. There you have scientists and military types actually behaving like somewhat believable science and military people. Attempts to study and learn about the Upside Down are shown, people are sent in with protective gear, a camera and a tether. They don't resort to a lazy "no one has ever come back" to make it a dangerous and unknown location.

EDIT: To restate that I did enjoy watching the film on some level, I liked the visual design they went with especially (and can think of one standout visual I really liked). But it has significant flaws and doesn't hold up to better films.

Y'all need to read the book, it's so good and you'll be pissed off that Garland wrote the script based on a "memory" of it.
