Last film you watched and your rating

The Lion King (2019). Rating: 7/10. Rating for original movie: 10/10

There were some nice additions, including the dialogue between the kid Simba and Nala which really fleshed out their friendship, and the parts with Shanzai. There was some funny moments, and I liked the additional characters that cropped up in "I just can't wait to be king" and "Hakuna Matata". The funniest/best part of the movie was Timon singing "Be Our Guest" when serving Pumbaa up as a diversion. That had me laughing out loud.

The worst parts were setting "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" during the daytime (why the heck did they choose that?), the pointless poop-filled journey of Simba's hair (did we really need to find out how Rafiki knew he was alive?) and the fact that they cut out the proper version of "Be Prepared" and Rafiki's "It doesn't matter it's in the past" scene. Mufasa appearing as a mere voice rather than an actual cloud vision is super annoying. Mufasa's cloud vision is such an iconic moment in it that it's gotten parodies made of it (especially one Simpsons episode). Why get rid of it?

Many people online are absolutely ripping into this movie, saying that it's a disaster. The worst thing ever. Hopefully this doesn't discourage Disney from making a sequel. Kiara appeared at the end of this movie, and it got me excited for a live-action version of The Lion King 2, which is my favourite in the Lion King series. Then again TLK2019 grossed $1.4 billion worldwide, the highest-grossing animated movie of all time. Think Disney cares more about that than the reviews.

Burning - 2.5 hours of build up for an unsatisfying ending. the film feels flabby and hence youre put off from rewatching to spot stuff that might be interesting now you know the ending.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

A difficult film to rate, I need to watch it again but I think I'd give it 7/10. The direction and performances are great though.

I like a lot of scenes individually but I don't think they combine to make a complete film which given that OUATIH is over 2.5 hours long is a problem. I've seen every Tarantino film except Death Proof and it's probably my least favourite.

The Hateful Eight – 8/10

I’d probably actually give this a 7 but 8 seemed more fitting.

After saying the other day that I had no interest in rewatching this, I was tempted back to it after all the Tarantino chat recently. H8ful 8 along with Jackie Brown are the two Tarantino’s I only had vague memories of watching and as JB wasn’t on Netflix, I watched this one.

It’s pretty good but not top tier QT. Walton Goggins and Samuel L Jackson steal the show. Kurt Russell and Jennifer Jason Leigh are good. Everyone else does a decent enough job.

It is way too long though. Editing it down by around 30 minutes would make this a much better movie. Tarantino is guilty of indulgence in most of his movies and this is one of the worst offenders.

I knew nothing about the true story it's based on, so the events had a real impact for me. Very well acted.

Aladdin 2019 - 8.5/10

More fleshed out characters than the animated version
But Jafar and Genie are nowhere near as memorable as their animated counterparts
Great acting by Aladdin and Jasmine
"Speechless" is a great original song, even if it reminds me too much of a certain other movie where characters get turned to dust
The songs in this movie that were in the original are nowhere near as good as the originals
They shouldn't have started the movie with Genie and Dahlia as it would be more impactful if it had been revealed at the end

All in all it's up there with Jungle Book and Beauty and the Beast as one of the better "live action" Disney remakes. Should Genie be called Man now that he's no longer a Genie?

The Thing (1982) - 9.5/10

It’s been years since I last watched this but it’s still fantastic. Most of the effects hold up and it’s an almost perfect movie.

Stepbrothers - 3/10

Awful. I’ve never seen it before and had heard good things but it’s shite.

The Godfather - 10/10

Not seen it since I was a kid. Perfectly made and gripping from start to finish.

John Wick - 8/10

I might watch the part two tonight.

Went to see this without knowing anything about it. I didn't even know it was a Quentin Tarantino film lol

Mom and Dad - genuinely brilliant. Obviously it's made by Insanity Cage, who runs through a house shrieking and barking at one point.

Not much to say on either of these. Thought they were good, kept me interested, but nothing remarkable.
