The Watching Artist said 2 is even worse.

:dread: :dread:

The only reason I'm still alive is that I'm lucky enough I didnt actually have to properly watch them. Just experience them from an adjacent room.

In 2 there is a bit where a man and a lady are having a meal (pretty sure its in a restaurant to) and he says "I think we should make a list of the pros and cons of sleeping together".

Anyone who doesn't do this is an animal.

I can still sit through the classic musical films (Grease, Sound of Music, My Fair Lady, Oliver, Annie etc), but there's just something about these modern ones that come across as desperately hollow and cynical. No time for them.

Sunshine on Leith was good though.

Not familiar with that one, but I think the issue is more with me than with the new films. It's nostalgia that makes me dislike these new ones, they don't invoke childhood memories and thus are gooseberry fool to me.

My Fair Lady is a great musical tbf.

I can't stand Mamma Mia as a musical or as a film, but there's been some great musical movies recently. The Last Five Years is a great show, and it's a pretty faithful adaptation (and Jeremy Jordan has an amazing voice  and it's got Anna Kendrick so it's not totally gay to watch obvs). Only an hour and a half long too so it doesn't outstay its welcome.

It's got a weird framing device, in that both of the leads tell their stories in the opposite order, so one starts from the start of their relationship, and the other from the end and they cross over in the middle. (It's super-effective in the stageshow, as the only moment the two are on stage together is the halfway point)

Also first time I watched the Greatest Showman I thought it was proper average and forgettable but the second time the soundtrack really grew on me. Loads better than La La Land (although I *love* the dance break in A Lovely Night)

EDIT: If people want a really good new musical there's a professionally-shot recording of the London Kinky Boots stageshow available (including subtitles, so no expenses spared), and it's tremendous.

There are very few musicals I like, but I agree that one was good.

The film was ok, but the songs were by The Proclaimers for strawberry float's sake. :dread:

IT Chapter 2 8/10
Watched this on Imax thought I treat myself as it is like 3 hours long!
Really enjoyed it and seeing them as adults. Reminded me of when I reconnected with old friends on Facebook for the first time haha.
Only down side with it is that not as much time was spent on Pennywise this time round.

Saw It Chapter 2 over the weekend and it was a bit naff.

Wasn't terrible, but it felt really unnecessary. The whole 'they left Derry and forgot their childhood' stuff from the book works because the kid and adult narratives are interwoven, meaning that both story threads end in them realising that Pennywise can only be defeated by not being scared of him at the same time narratively, if not chronologically. But because they split the storylines out, you have to watch them realise how to defeat him as kids, do so, then forget it, then spend THREE strawberry floating HOURS watching them go on fetch quests (I think they even call the magic memory items 'totems' or some other gooseberry fool that would definitely not sound out of place as items to be collected from the end of Zelda dungeons) so that they can remember again and go do pretty much the exact same thing again except this time win.

Plus, whether in the original script, (before the kids in the first film were (rightly) so well received), or not, but half the film is just revisiting the kids and doing more scary gooseberry fool that they didn't show in the first film. So the adults don't get nearly as much screen time to gel or develop the camaraderie that held the first film together.

And the CGI is still strawberry floating wank.

It was funny though (intentionally so, and I mean laugh out loud funny too), and the background stuff was still creepy as hell. Also, I couldn't help but think of this when Pennywise got in his final form;

Braveheart

Historically it's mostly bollocks, but it's still a good film, great in places.

Spiderman Far From Home 8.5/10

Straight up there with Thor Ragnarok and CA: The First Avenger as one of my top Marvel films, this was much, much better than I expected. I'm a huuuuuge sucker for coming of age films and this was a much better done version of the Marvel equivalent than Homecoming was, with buckets of charm, excellent performances and a decent plot. It also made me laugh more than either GoTG film.

As someone thoroughly burned out on superhero films the fact that, outside of the action scenes, it didn't really feel like a Marvel film was a huge plus point too.

Such a shame it's likely the last MCU Spiderman film though. Tom Holland and the entire cast and crew deserve better than to be pawns in Disney's unstoppable march to control every piece of entertainment on the planet.

I loved FFH, and I really hope they’re able to work out a deal to keep those characters in the MCU going forward.

The Fugitive 8/10

never seen this. Just the exact kind of film I wanted to watch at that time. 90'S crime thriller American style, great fun. Harrison Ford with a beard

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow 6/10

Considering the fact this was made in 2004 it's still an extremely impressive technical feat but the script is dull as dishwater and the characters drawn intentionally broad. Would've worked much better as a 20 minute short (which I think it was actually based off thinking about it) than a star studded feature as the entire cast is wasted due to the strict 1940s mannerisms they're forced to adapt.

It's still gorgeous though.

Ad Astra - 5/10

This was really weird, seemed like an effort to do Heart of Darkness in space but it really didn’t work for me and instead just felt like a Brad Pitt vanity vehicle.
