Confusing, long, impressive in some ways, and a massive disappointment in others. First of all, the thing that struck me first was the muffled dialogue which kept me out of the story. The characters, such as they are, are saying stuff to eachother and right from the off I had no idea what. Part of that was because they were wearing masks, and also because the strawberry floating soundtrack was too loud. It was like Dark Knight Rises all over again. Throughout the film I was going "what? What's going on? Slow down please. What are you talking about? Why is this happening?" and it quickly became painfully clear I was just going to have to eat gooseberry fool and try to like it for two and a half hours.

Like pretty much all Nolan films, the characters had no humanity to them at all. Couple that with a plot that was almost incomprehensible and I lost interest entirely.

Maybe I'm just an idiot. Maybe it requires rewatching. But I have no desire to watch it again.

I'll give it a 5 out of 10 just for the action alone. The rest of it was crap.

The original is so simple in its execution, travel through time to collect historical figures, and it's a classic and an absolute personal favourite. I also watched the sequel recently and I don't think I'd ever bother with it again. It's just really weird and cringey.

Iron Man - 7.5/10
After they had been banging on about it for ages I thought I'd finally start watching some of the Marvel movies with my kids. Apparently loads of their friends have been allowed to watch the MCU stuff by their parents for years, whilst they aren't exactly the most explicit or violent movies I didn't think it was all that appropriate so wanted to wait until they were at least a bit bigger for jumping in!

Maybe it's because I've seen it quite a few times now or maybe it was because I was watching it with kids asking bloody questions all the time, but I didn't enjoy this quite as much as I remember doing. It's still a good movie, everyone involved does a great job and the effects are still really impressive, but it just seems a bit lacking now.

I do quite like how relatively grounded the movie is compared to where the MCU ended up going a lot of the time - this is all about traditional weapons, terrorists, corporate greed etc. rather than aliens and gods. There's nothing wrong with the more fantastical and sci-fi elements of the MCU, I've enjoyed all of that immensely, but it was quite a nice change to get something that's very "terrestrial" by comparison!

Ion Man 2 5.5/10
It's alright, Robert Downey is still brilliant but the story isn't that great and was honestly rather bored by it tbh.

Iron, Man 3 - 7/0

The final film in the Iron, Man trilogy is basically just a re-hash of the first film, where our hero Derek is forced to iron the clothes of a surfer dude until he finishes the laundry pile. Great special effects though.

Bram Stoker's Dracula

I was quite surprised how closely the film stuck to the book. They've made one massive change a whole bunch of small changes and the whole thing very theatrical and slocky but it's recognisibly an adaptation of the book. Like the book I didn't really like the film either but it held my attention so:

I had Child's Play (2019) playing in the background while I was marking and it was a good laugh. I'm sure there's other edits out there because there's this whole 'Stranger Things' style subplot with this bunch of kids who sort of drop in and out of the plot as convenient, so I'm guessing there's one cut about Andy and his Mum (that mirrors the original) and one cut about Andy being the figurehead of this Stranger Things style storyline and the final cut is a (serviceable) compromise between the two.

It makes big changes from the dynamic of the original that are not badly handled, and it must have been doing something right because I laughed at the correct points but also genuinely didn't want some characters (one in particular) to get killed. Also, bear in mind, this was meant to be background noise while I got work done and I kept getting distracted by it, which is usually a good sign.

You'll know if you would give a gooseberry fool about this movie already, and I don't think it would win anyone sceptical of the genre over, but if you like these movies (the older and very new ones in particular) then you'll enjoy this.

Christopher Nolan was so desperate for cinemas to reopen for a film which would be best watched at home.

Considering literally strawberry float all happens unless you count the guy getting lost in the city and being found by some nice fellows as action it's actually not bad.

The Lincoln Lawyer - 8/10

Some dated editing aside, this was an enjoyable legal drama. McConaughey was very good and the supporting cast was decent.

Peanut Butter Falcon - 8/10

Very heartwarming and endearing, great performances from everyone involved. The ending was a bit of a let down, it's as it they didn't know how to really close it out.

John Wick - 9/10

The original and still the best. It's amazing how quickly it flies by on repeated viewings, there is literally no fat on this one.

The Godfather.

The Killer Shrews - 7/10. not seen this in years, still find it very enjoyable

Island of Lost Souls - 1932 - 10/10

The earliest adaption of The Island of Dr Moreau. Beautifully filmed and very well acted with Moreau being charming and creepy. The effects are well done and it builds to a unsettling and brilliant ending. Easily the best version of the story and it has aged remarkably well. Only 71 minutes long but it packs a lot in and doesn't have any pointlessl subplots of filler.
