Matt Damon week.

The Martian 9/10. Only watched this for the first time a couple of months ago. Just as good second time around.

Elysium. 5/10. Average and unoriginal.

Le Mans 9/10. Really enjoyed this. Christian Bale was great in it.

Miss Sloane - 8/10 some great acting from Jessica Chastain in this and from Mark Strong with a real good story and twists in the court room scenes

1917 - 9/10. Gripping from start to finish. The type of film that only really works viewed the once as so much of its appeal comes from not knowing what is coming next and the epic tension that then causes throughout. The way so much of the film feels as if it was shot in one take with just the one camera only draws you in even more. Glad I'd not watched trailers or pretty much anything else about the film going in.

Worth saving until you have the best possible means of viewing it. Up there with Saving Private Ryan.

Going in Style 7/10
Rather enjoyable caper, with a mostly older cast, pretty funny too.

One Flew over the Cuckoo's nest 7/10 It was fine, was expecting something special and it wasn't. Maybe other movies have done it better since, maybe I'm just uncultured swine. Considering how long it is I don't think Nurse Ratchett was particularly well developed enough for the pay off, though maybe it's supposed to be more subtle than that.

Looks like it was on a pretty tight budget and it's silly in a slightly different way to the originals. Won't be to everyone's taste.

Caught Peninsula last night.

Yea, it was fine. Suffered from the lack of the tight space that drove the original which meant that the story felt bloated and over the top, and it's a classic example of a 90 minute movie that's somehow 2 hours long. But if you loved the original you'll probably be a bit disappointed by how generic and formulaic this feels, but if you only liked it you'll probably just like this for being more of same mindless zombie nonsense.

The first hour is the best, but the the second half needed to be trimmed and the third act (with it's strawberry floating Fury Road video game car chase sequence, and ENDLESS strawberry floating fakeout 'one last twist' endings got ridiculous). It's also so formulaic that about halfway through, once you've clocked all the Chekov's Guns that have been thrown out, it doesn't take much to figure out the only way they can all fall together and so you can see the ending coming from a mile away.

However, there were some good stuff. There was at least two seeming throw-away moments early on that become really significant later in ways that were actually surprising and so felt really satisfying. The idea of the plot basically being a heist during an outbreak was really interesting (which makes it a big shame that this idea is basically abandoned as soon as it gets going in favour of just being 'Good family vs AWOL Army Unit'), and as I say the early scenes were pretty effective. I also like how physical the zombies were - I'd forgotten the zombie who gets strawberry floated up in Busan from falling off the trains roof, and it doubles down on that idea with zombies who really feel like physical things in this.

I also don't know whether it was intentional but during the climax it looks like one character is going to get a sad send-off, only to back down before briefly suggests a strawberry floating brutal one (accompanied by the best line of dialogue in 2020 - Me and my mate now refer to most decisions as 'very sensible' for reasons you'll see) before backing down again and suggesting an even darker one before backing down a last time and giving her a happy ending.

Yea, meh, it was fine.

Finished knives out and I think the direction is great, the performances are wonderful, and the pace is mostly good and the movie is a completely enjoyable, highly recommended.

I couldn't sleep, so I rewatched Your Name, and man, that film is still so, so good. Beautiful animation, brilliant storytelling, and I love the soundtrack. 9/10.

Dolittle. 3/10.

Robert Downey Jr does his best Tom Jones impression for almost 2 hours with a script so fantastically unfunny it’s almost impressively so. The Blair/Sheen joke for the adults raised a smirk, I will give them that.

The Babysitter and The Babysitter Killer Queen.
Entertaining. Funny. Intriguing. A masterpiece in easy watching. 8/10.

Zodiac - 9/10

So well made. Just a slightly frustrating ending, but no other way they could have ended it.

Halloween - 2018 - 9/10

Excellent sequel which sets up the next two films very well. Really well paced with a great ending.

The Guns Of Navarone (1961) - 7/10

Terminator Dark Fate 3/10

Some great action, spoiled as always by inconsistency with why a terminator would move heaven and earth during a car chase or similar to get anywhere close to the heroes, but then at other times will stand about 6ft away just staring at them or walking very slowly. Pretty gooseberry fool really.

3 is ridiculously harsh.

I did wonder why, if the Terminator can hack into a drone and crash it why not just launch a missile at the camp they were in and blow the whole place up.
