Alien: Convenant - 6/10

Not horrendous, but not good. It was all very predictable for the most part, and the plot was typical nonsense. They always seem to want to overcomplicate films like this with lore that nobody cares about or some kind of 'deep meaning/greater purpose' angle which doesn't work. You don't need to explain everything, and sometimes the mystery helps - just keep it simple. Some of the CGI was terrible as well - surely they realise it looks awful? :dread:

Just makes me want to watch the original now. :datass:

Dr Sleep

Really enjoyed this. Thought it was a brave and interesting way of expanding on the lore of the Shining. Not sure the execution of the final act was as good as it could have been and before then the interlinked scenes in the woods/the girl's home where almost everyone dies within a couple of minutes of each other felt quite abrupt, especially seeing as the film is two and a half hours long and so should have had plenty of room to work with.

Bloodsport - 6/10

I assume people love this in either a nostalgic or "so bad it's good" way? It's a terrible movie. Poor acting, crap soundtrack, awful sound effects, rubbish fight choreography and appalling storylines.

It's entertaining though.

I watched this last week and it's definitely the nostalgia. I just love it.

I love how we get a training montage within the first ten minutes of the film and JCVD is seemingly stood in place, staring into the ether for the entire 10 minute duration :lol:

I'd never seen it before so had no nostalgia other than a the general 80s movie feeling.

The flashback training montage was bizarre :lol:

The love interest, journalist character is hilariously bad as well. She goes from being super psyched about investigating the tournament to horrified and demanding it be stopped and then to loving every second and actively cheering within the blink of an eye. 80s character development :lol:

And she completely missed that JCVD was in love with the hairy beer drinking fighter. That scene in the hospital at the end was more homoerotic than the Top Gun volleyball scene could ever have hoped to be. :lol:

And we haven't even mentioned the fact that the whole thing is a "true" story based on the clearly absolute bullshit spouted by a, perhaps mentally ill, compulsive liar.

Such an amazing amount of bullshit, such outlandish lies that he deserves to have a movie celebrating his imagination. :lol:

For me, it made the movie even better :lol:

I wish they'd add some more JCVD to Netflix. I'm really in the mood for some more ridiculousness now. I remember Double Impact being particularly entertaining.

Universal Soldier is his best though. Genuinely excellent action film.

Oh and Kickboxer!

JCVD pumped out so many of these late 80s/early 90s B-tier action movies, like you say some were actually pretty decent but it's the trash that gets remembered! :lol:

My limited viewing ranks them as The Grand Budapest Hotel> Isle of Dogs> Moonrise Kingdom> The Darjeeling Limited. Grand Budapest Hotel is fantastic, Darjeeling Limited is actually bad.

It's poorly handled.

Of the ones I've seen:

The Grand Budapest Hotel> Isle of Dogs> Fantastic Mr Fox > Life Aquatic > The Darjeeling Limited

Life Aquatic has good moments, and you can see how the style really came together for Grand Budapest, but has it's flaws.

Also, I read the other day someone describe the Paddington films as Wes Anderson films for kids, but they're just as good to watch when you're an adult.

I couldn’t get on with any of Wes Anderson’s films.

Both Paddington films are better than anything Anderson has done.

To be clear that's because the Paddington films are fantastic, not necessarily because Anderson is bad
