Why didn't they train the dragon to fly the ring to Mordor?

I think I've only seen the director's cut once but I'd probably agree with you. It adds the door knocking and restaurant scenes, right? Wasn't a huge fan of those additions.

The pacing gets a kick in the dick for starters, and it feels generally grimier and sleazier, probably because of those scenes you mentioned, my memory of it is hazy. His love is like a father to a daughter, and not what Besson went for there with those.

I've never seen this film before but I thought it was brilliant. Really made by the big names-Denzil Washington and Gene Hackman give fantastic performances and Hans Zimmer's score adds superbly to the tension and drama throughout. Don't think the scenario would work with today's technology but for the time, I bet this was a pretty terrifying idea. Still is, in lots of ways I guess.

Great shout, Crimsom Tide is fantastic

Although Hunt for Red October is my favourite submarine film, Crimson Tide is indeed great.

Hackman pretty much makes everything great.

Booksmart - 9/10

Excellent coming of age film about 2 high school girls who realise they've too much time dedicated to books. Very funny, especially the leads (one of whom is Jonah Hill's sisters) and Olivia Wilde (her directional debut I think) has an excellent eye. A few scenes in particular like the swimming pool bit and the argument were superbly done.

I think what I liked best was there were no stereotypical high school kids, no out and out bad characters. Everyone was multi dimensional and deep down, good people. A refreshing take.

This was really well crafted and shot but the film really explained way too much. The twist at the end was pretty obvious but also left a rather big plot hole when you actually considered the ramifications of it. And infact, once you learnt the whole deal about the underground society, it all made less and less sense. They should have either said less or had a better explanation. Its all well and good putting in clever little references (Thriller, whack a mole etc) but you're underlying story needs to stack up too.

Having said that, there were some top performances and the cinematography was superb-lots of clever camera angles so you saw an attack coming a second before it happened. Also, the underlying message on the ceilings imposed by class in society and how people are a victim of the surroundings they are born into was well delivered.

I liked it but Get Out did everything better.

I much prefer it to Get Out, I found it far creepier and the setup had me far more intrigued from the start.

Admittedly when you learn what’s going on it only really raises more questions but I think with the whole dark undertones and very twisted world it portrays that only contributes to the unsettling vibe of it all (convenient I know). Get Out I think gets more of a pass because it maybe reflects reality a bit more than just being a weird creepy world. I didn’t really get that from the film though so to me just felt kind of obtuse.

I agree with Tomous, although I still enjoyed Us.

The plot of it, I just tried not to think about it too much.

Both movies have bullshit far fetched plots that make strawberry float all sense when you stop to think about it.

I like both movies, not everything has to be realistic or make any sense.

Get Out is a much better movie though.

Definitely agree with the point Tomous was making about the exposition. It explained way too much, and could have gotten away with saying less.

I have no issue with it being unrealistic but I think it's better to leave things ambiguous rather than lay everything out in detail when it doesn't really make sense.

I do really like the underlying message and point the film is making though, and it is very thought provoking when you really look below the surface (pun unintended). I just think the final third could have been more polished. Especially as the twist on the tethered Adelaide swapping with the original Adelaide makes no sense in the context of the rule's the film establishes.

Caught Godzilla vs Kong last night.

Plenty of good fun, but some stuff got a little too silly for even a premise like that to get away with. If you liked King of the Monsters you'll enjoy this, and it's more lighthearted than any of the previous movies. It's much more tonally in line with Skull Island than it is with KOTM, which helps. The other thing that helps is that all the fighting happens in bright, well lit environments, mostly daytime, which makes the action a lot more satisfying, if less atmospheric, than the moody cloudy rainy blur of KOTM.

That said, it's not perfect. If you know 'the rules' of any Vs movie you know exactly what's going to happen, and it does. There's also this really meandering middle chapter which serves little more than a setup for making the eventual ending make sense but damn does it take a long time doing it.

There's also an issue in that neither Godzilla nor Kong seem to be consistently powerful. Their power seems to beef up and shrink down without reason except for it being a fairer fight. They also don't really address that Godzilla is just objectively the more powerful monster, which they seem to play on because at one point, no joke, Godzilla strawberry floating atomic-breathes a hole into the middle of the strawberry floating planet and then that same atomic breath barely knocks Kong over later in the film.

Also, and I totally get that this is absolutely only of interest to me, but the fight in Hong Kong was really uneven geographically. If they didn't give a gooseberry fool about the geography of the city and just put a smattering of famous buildings from the skyline then fair play, but they seem to go to genuine lengths to recreate the city faithfully (to the point that I literally think they blew up a building I used to live in, and I definitely recognised one of my favourite bars before Kong stood on it), and then have the monsters jump around the map impossibly. It would be like faithfully recreating Covent Garden and then having Godzilla punch Kong and he falls on Big Ben.

Spoilers ahead!

Some of the Apex stuff was nonsense though. That strawberry floating underwater tunnel to HK, and the little spaceships that somehow double as a strawberry floating heart defibrillator. Also, a heart slowing down doesn't speed up if electrocuted. I know this is a daft thing to pick at when Godzilla was 'restarted' by a nuclear bomb in KOTM, but he's a nuclear monster. That's his whole thing. Kong's just a big monkey, giving him a massive electric shock when he's dying is bollocks.

And yea, so the whole 'vs' thing play out exactly like you think. Godzilla wins a round, Kong wins a round, then another bigger threat turns up (Mechagodzilla, who I legit didn't know was in this as I've gone dark since the first trailer, and is being piloted, I think, by the soul of Ghidorah?) and they work together and eventually call a truce, with Godzilla being the King of the 'overworld' and Kong becoming king of the Hollow Earth.

And holy gooseberry fool, it was a good thing the Hollow Earth was really interesting and beautiful to look at because that whole plotline was strawberry floating nonsense from start to finish. Really only existed so Kong had somewhere to be King of at the end.

Also, when the little girl is trying to sign to Kong that Godzilla isn't the enemy, the only thing I could think was 'How the strawberry float does Kong know that his name is Godzilla??' And he's fighting MECHAGODZILLA, how is 'Godzilla is friend' a useful distinction, you stupid strawberry floating 6 year old.

I reckon you already know if you'll like this movie, and you're probably right.
