Last film you watched and your rating

I loved King of the Monsters, and so have high hopes for this.

The landmark thing in films has always been a thing. Once you notice it, you can't unsee it.

Hey this is in France, so every single window has a view of the Eiffel tower.

London = Buckingham palace and the Westminster clock tower.

Oh no thus destructive event is happening, I hope the Hollywood sign doesn't get destroyed!

I will say that my only one theory from the trailer didn't prove to be correct, and the explanation in the movie is really boring.

I thought (trailer spoilers only) that Kong's Axe, that appears to be made from one of Godzilla's back plates, would be come about because Kong would lose a round with Godzilla, but injure him sufficiently to get one of the back plates, and then build the axe himself ahead of the final fight.

Instead, Kong just finds it on the floor of his house.

I quite liked the first Godzilla. This appeals to me but I haven't seen Skull Island-is it worth watching first?

Yea, but this is like 'Oh it's London, and James Bond just jumped off Big Ben and landed in Buckingham Palace.

Like, they're not next to each other.

Again, it's a very personal gripe but it's genuine because it took me out of the movie. Like, they were fighting next to Bank of China building (you'll see it a lot), which is on the border of two neighbourhoods called Central and Admiralty, then Godzilla throws Kong and he smashes through the (correctly realised) neighbourhood of Wan Chai which is, IRL, next along from Admiralty. They then fight more and keep moving and then magically are back by the Bank of China building. It was genuinely disorientating because I walk down the road they were smashing up daily and it was weird to make such a big deal about it being accurate and then make the actual fight epileptically jump around the geography.

To be clear, this is definitely only going to bother me as no one else will notice. But had it just been 'Skyscrapers with a few recognisable landmarks' then cool, I wouldn't have noticed as much. But it's just so weird that they went to such pains and detail to genuinely recreate the geography of the city to the point where I was spotting bars I've drunk in and buildings I've lived in, only to jizz it away by having the fight not have any spatial awareness.

Probably more that they're more interesting buildings for the shot taking place. James bond jumping off the clock tower and then running along some dump of a street for 5 minutes looks less spectacular than landing on the roof of a car that immediately smashes out the window of the top floor of the shard.

The worst for this was the dreadful Transformers: The Last Knight.

Try watching the 'London' scenes, complete with US street signs at 2:46.

Typical filmmakers, trying to make good looking movies instead of realising that *technically* that's not a skyscraper, that's where Marks and Spencers is.

Yea, Skull Island's pretty good. Better than Godzilla 2014, I would say not as good as KOTM but a breezier watch than all the broody standing in dark rooms of KOTM. It's also got quite a bit of very relevant backstory.

Also, further thoughts;

The human characters are probably the least gooseberry fool since Skull Island but still pretty dull. Eleven goes off on a Goonies style mini adventure that really only exists so she can overhear top secret conversations by infiltrating the most hilariously under-secured Top Secret Facilities since the Resident Evil franchise. Her and her two lackeys provide the comic relief and also why Godzilla is seemingly gone bad.

Rebecca Hall is obviously in serious financial trouble as she emails in all the key lines from the trailer about how much Kong is definitely the more powerful winning Titan against a nuclear powered dinosaur who has already defeated a three headed lightning dragon and a big Pterodactyl and some strawberry floating huge Daddy Long Legs and made all the other Titans literally bow down in front of him.

I think literally all the dialogue from the guy from Bloodline is in the trailer. That guy had the easiest paycheque ever.

Alexander Skarsgard has the weirdest character in that he seems to be the dude who is meant to replace Ken Watanabe as the dude who's an expert on 'what's going on' except pretty much everything has to be explained to him? So, he's like, the audience surrogate, except he's the one who's meant to be the expert.

Fun thriller with Liam Neeson

Taken 2 5/10
Unnecessary sequel, but has plenty of fun action scenes.

Taken 3 4.5/10
Scrapping the barrel a bit here, but it's still a blast seeing Neeson kicking ass.

Green Zone 7.5/10
Enjoyable thriller, that feels a bit like Bourne in a Warzone

Office Space - 4/10

I'm probably going to get pelters for this but why is this considered a comedy classic? It's not actually that funny. I think I laughed a couple of times at the most. I feel like it's well regarded because it gave an outlet to people who hated their jobs...it was just very meh to me.

I wouldn't say I ever considered it a comedy classic - it's more of a well-observed humorous study of office politics with some nice performances. It's pretty low-key, but I like that.

Certainly not a 4/10 film though!

Maybe I meant cult classic more and perhaps I went in with too high expectations. I just found it pretty dull and was bored despite the short runtime.

I think it's quite of its time. It's parodying an office culture that doesn't really exist in the same way anymore, so I imagine it doesn't quite hit with younger audiences. Especially after The Office.
